Billy Joe Saunders MD12 Andy Lee

Big boy, Lee. But it's Saunders who takes the opener with a sharp right hand in the final few seconds. Gorgeous right hook.

Lee has a really good opening minute to the third in what has become an odd arrangement, Saunders, the boxer, exerting pressure on Lee, the puncher. Lee obviously trying to load counterpunches, but how's he going to win on points? He can't. Worse, he gets dropped, hard by a wonderful right hook after 90 seconds. He's dropped again just seconds later and although he's up quickly (very hard man Lee) he's clearly in a spot of trouble. Saunders tries to corner him and Lee fights rather than holds - he's terribly disorganised by the end, but Suanders can't find it. Very nice. The first KD was exquisite, he just weaves under the right over the top, comes up and across. Worth hunting down that KD.

Fourth round is a bit of a mystery. Saunders does pretty much nothing, not even as active as he was in the first and second, it makes no sense. He throws a couple of jabs to the body - definitely drops the round. No reason at all to take this attitude unless she's tired? Weird and typical BJS. He probably nicks the fifth with another outstanding punch, but his stalk isn't as affective now because Lee is being much more careful. Lee's corner is asking for pressure though, so it will be interesting to see if this opens Lee up. He does, and he does get away with it, stealing the sixth with a banging lead hook to the body that clearly disturbs BJS. Creeping right back into this fight.

The fight ebbs and flows but Lee clearly wins the final two rounds, both tiring, both getting lax about their footwork, which of course favours Lee. BJS wins on the strength of the KDs in a very close fight.

    Saunders:1,2,3*,5,7,10
    Lee:4,6,8,9,11,12

    114-112 BJS.

    *Lee down twice.

Hi George, what score did you have the other two times? I scored Rodriguez by a round I think.

I had it 97-94 Rodriguez twice. Or 6-3-1 in the scoring of the time.

Yeah, I just checked back to the Cuban Controversy FOTF (zzzzz ;)) to see. What made it closer for you this time?

Idk tbh, maybe coz I watched it this time focusing on Griffith? I forgot how much he nullified Rodriguez's infighting, and he was the aggressor more. That said, it was clear who was more skilled, and who was more rugged.

    Sidenote, I hate Rodriguez's nose.

There's a reason he's known as El Feo.

Here is a bout I watched and scored today. afterwards I checked the history on this bout and I believe only Phillyfan checked this out. Here it is, Wilfredo Vasquez defending his super bantam title against Orlando Canizales.

    Round 1: 10-9 Vasquez
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Vasquez
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 6: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 7: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 8: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 9: 10-9 Vasquez
    Round 10: 10-9 Vasquez
    Round 11: 10-9 Vasquez
    Round 12: 10-9 Canizales

    Total: 115-115 Draw

Philly summed it up really well on how it unfolded. Man, I was screaming at the screen for Orlando to get in there. When he stayed outside he was getting pot-shotted by Vasquez. A bit infuriating and lacking some major thrills, but a decent enough fight. Official scores were 116-115 and 115-113 for Vasquez and 117-113 for Canizales from the Texas judge. Harold Lederman had it 116-112 for Canizales and Larry Merchant agreed with him for Canizales but by one point. So you'll have to be your own judge on this one.

I had it 6-3-1 for Rodriguez, feeling that his work-rate was the key.

Griffith, as prime as ever, takes on Cuban toughman Benny Paret. This was the beginning of something truly tragic, and a sleeper trilogy between underappreciated welterweight champions. Wasn't that hard to score, dunno why the judging was so eratic.

An absolute clinic in subtle defence and negative infighting. Griffith just abused his strength advantage and shut down Paret's inside work with grappling and then worked from superior positions. Paret throw a lot but wasn't landing much, especially to the head.

The shots which got the KO were vintage Griffith, perfect timing and a placement.

Watched Michael Nunn take apart Frank Tate for the IBF Middleweight championship. No point in a scorecard for this one, Nunn won every round before the ninth-round stoppage. He turned a technically sound, highly-pedigreed boxer-puncher look hopelessly lost and out of place.

Never cared for Nunn but when he was focused and in shape he was really, really good.

    Arthur Mercante 6-3
    Joe Armstrong 8-1
    Tony Castellano 6-3

Griffith, again absolutely prime, takes on underrated MW Holly Mims. Mims being slightly past prime, but still a very worthy fighter.

This was an elite infighting contest between two incredibly skilled fighters. Awesome to watch.

George, have you ever seen the Holly Mims-Joey Archer fight? Very close and controversial.

Nah mate, I haven't. I have heard it's controversial, although I probably won't watch it until next week, since I want to keep watching Griffith and I need to do the FOTF.
