After the Banke-Lee fight, I saw Banke's bout with Kennedy McKinney was out there, so I really had to check that out. Unfortunately it was really one-way traffic. I gave McKinney every round - scoring knockdowns in rounds 2 and 6 for a score of 60-52 after six rounds. At that time Banke was retired at the end of the 6th. Only in the 4th did he look like he was going to do anything. But even there I still gave the round to the pin-point punching of McKinney. This was really a prime McKinney whom Banke fought.

Needed a good slam-bang affair to get the day going and I lighted upon a great old one between Florentino Fernandez and Rory Calhoun. Scored on NY rounds basis.

    Round 1: FF
    Round 2: FF
    Round 3: FF
    Round 4: Calhoun
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: FF
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Fernandez stops Calhoun

Total (through 7 completed rounds): 4-1-2 Fernandez

Wicked shots abound in this one as they entertain the paying audience. Man, you just knew this one was not meant to go the distance. Didn't think Calhoun was going to rise from the knockdown in the 8th. He did,but you knew he couldn't survive the followup.

Back in the scoring seat. Missed you guys.

Chan Hee Park vs Shoji Oguma II

    Park : Oguma

1: 10 - 8 (Park storming out with his erratic, fluid style)
    2: 10 - 9 (Clear Park round imo)
3: 10 - 10 (Oguma cleaner, but Park overwhelming him)
    4: 10 - 9 (lovely body shot, but Oguma couldn't level it)
5: 9 - 10 (Oguma landing nasty short punches. Park smothering)
6: 10 - 10 (Even. Oguma with some real sneaky work here)
7: 10 - 9 (Park swarming at the end to take it)
8: 10 - 10 (Lots of even set up here)
    9: 10 - 9 (Close. Park scoring erratically)
    10: 9 - 10 (Oguma with vicious short uppers)
    11: 9 - 10 (Slow round - Park glancing and tired)
    12: 9 - 10 (Oguma pounding those screw shots)
    13: 9 - 10 (Oguma sharp)
    14: 10 - 9 (Park doing that bit more)
    15: 9 - 10 (Oguma taking no risks)

    TOTAL: 144 - 143 PARK

    Notes:
After all I had heard about this being an extremely wide and unfair decision before seeing, I honestly don't disagree with the judges verdict here (even though I thought Park edged it) - and I think this is one that shows why judges (who are right up close, seeing all the action and effect of shots) are that much better at scoring 98% of the time than the fans. That is why I have to disagree with @George Crowcroft's scorecard - Park had amazing fluid movement and controlled the opening, but Oguma was an extremely sneaky, tough operator, in particular with his body shots, and was more effective in regards to his work towards the end, whereas Park was more active and flashy but was constantly glancing - and I have a soft spot for his style. Oguma has a style where his best work - sneaky, in close, subtle devastation - gets neglected by most viewers scoring. I would be interested to see @scartissue score this one.

My score was similar to George's, but you make a lot of trenchant observations about these two fighters and this fight. Kudos!

Got a couple of fights on the backlog that I need to address, but I found out this fight was on youtube on another thread here and I just had to see it. It was the 12 rounder between Leon Spinks and Jesse Burnett. These two gave it their all.

    Round 1: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 2: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 3: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 4: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 5: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 6: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 7: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 8: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 9: 10-9 Spinks
    Round 10: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 11: 10-9 Burnett
    Round 12: 10-9 Spinks

Total: 115-113 Burnett (actual scores 116-113, 117-112 and 116-114 all for Spinks)

At the time I first saw this I screamed highway robbery. Now I see it calmly and only have Burnett ahead by two points, which may be controversial, but maybe not a robbery. Still, I thought Burnett deserved it with his pinpoint punching over Leon's greater - but not so precise - workrate.

Gene Fullmer v Carmen Basilio 1

Classic fight from the end of a classic era, the 1950s, with Fullmer and Basilio doing battle for the vacant NBA version of the world middleweight championship after Robinson was stripped of the title.

Neither fighter could ever be accused of being a stylist but Basilio looked practically elegant in comparison to Fullmer who used an ugly but effective chopping jab (you'll see what I mean if you watch it) as he fought largely off the back foot against the prowling Basilio.

I had this an even fight moving into the championship rounds at which point Fullmer's edge in size and strength started to show and Basilio lost a bit of pop on his punches. Nevertheless, the stoppage felt a bit premature even if Basilio was on his way to defeat on points. Admittedly, it was a big right hand that Basilio took that rocked him back into the ropes and maybe the ref knew Basilio wouldn't go down no matter how much he was hurt. Still, it surprised me and obviously upset Basilio.

    1 9-10 (close)
    2 10-9 (close)
    3 9-10
    4 9-10
    5 9-10
    6 10-9 (good round)
    7 10-9
8 10-9 (Basilio winning until Fullmer rocks him at the end of the round)
    9 10-9
    10 9-10 (close)
    11 10-9
    12 10-9
    13 10-9 (not a lot on Baslio's punches now, he's tired)
(125-122; 8 rounds to 5 to Fullmer up to 14th round)
    14 Fullmer TKO Basilio

    Dick Tiger v Henry Hank

High quality and competitive middleweight 10 rounder from the early 60s. I had this closer than the judges but still a clear win by Tiger.

I thought Hank fought well in spurts but the consistent work came from Tiger and when they traded, Hank invariably came out the loser.

1 10-9 (cracking start! Strong opener from Hank before Tiger comes back hard to take it)
2 9-10 (close. Hank doing well until he decides to trade with Tiger at the end of the round)
    3 10-9
4 10-9 (after a quieter 3rd round, they go into the trenches again. Hank's not going to win like that)
5 10-9 (Tiger controlling the fight outside as well as inside now)
6 9-10 (close. Better movement from Hank)
7 9-10 (another strong round from Hank. Good head movement and making Tiger pay when he misses)
    8 10-9 (Tiger outworks Hank)
    9 10-9
10 10-9 (excellent final round action)
    Tiger 97-93 Hank
    7-3 in rounds to Tiger

It's good, you should defo keep it.

Do you know that Hank/Tiger was an official shut out? I can't see that at all.

Yeah, I checked the official scores after I scored it myself and was surprised to see it so one-sided. I mean, Tiger won, obviously, but it was not one way traffic.

It was one of those fights where the official scores (and my score) do not tell the story of how close each round was. I had it 9-0-1 for Tiger, scoring the 8th round even and I noted the 4th round was extremely close too but I still thought Tiger did enough that round. it was just a very tough close fight. I also noted when I originally saw this fight on the link I was watching, in the 10th round at about the 40:48 mark that the two exchanged left hooks that caused my eyes to pop. I yelled out 'whooaa!'. Amazing no one went down from that exchange.
