Tell you what's interesting, is that not long before Harold Johnson utterly thrashed Doug Jones. You wonder what it might have looked like if Jones had ended up fighting Ali.

Johnson was meant to have fought Liston at one point too, I think it was Summerlin who stepped in but don't quote me. Johnson was a butterfly effect away from taking on Liston and Ali both.

Hearns' best win for my money. Clear win over a prime ATG at his best weight, in a fashion which no-one else did.

Bogus point deduction in the 4th, a round which Tommy thoroughly won. Doesn't matter, he made up for it the next round. In the 9th, that 'KD' was a slip, and Hearns won the majority of the round. I gave it Benítez 10-9, since that KD was a product of improper refereeing, rather than Benítez's ability.

    The Thread coming soon.

Robert Quiroga v Kid Akeem (and my scorecard is nothing like the officials)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Kid
    Round 4: 10-9 Kid
    Round 5: 10-9 Quiroga
    Round 6: 10-9 Kid
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Kid
    Round 9: 10-9 Kid
    Round 10: 10-9 Quiroga
    Round 11: 10-9 Kid
    Round 12: 10-9 Kid

Total: 118-113 Kid Akeem (official scores: 115-114, and two scores of 116-112 all for Quiroga)

It was a grueling fight, but one where the scorer has to separate the volume of punches from the harder punches. Perhaps it is in the eye of the beholder on what they find more impressive. I was more impressed with the steady shots of Kid over the sporadic, eye-catchers of Quiroga. An outstanding contest between two fighters who ultimately had tragic ends.

Not to be a wiseguy, but I think you have it 115-113 for Akeem.

    Another lazy card. :p

I disagreed with Lederman in the mid-rounds. Whilst he had Barkley's pressure taking it, I liked Hearns' jab and thought most of Barkley's shots hit arms and glove. Whereas Hearns was landing easily with hooks and straights, and jabbed his head off in the centre of the ring.

Now, whilst I disagreed with the decision, it's no robbery. And whilst watching what Hearns was doing specifically, so I've probably (no, definitely) been lenient to Hearns.

Scuffing right hand and more of a push to get the first KD, but Leonard did seem hurt, and certainly wasn't happy he was down. He looked like he was going to cry actually.

There is NO case for anything over than a Tommy win here. I gave Leonard the benefit of the doubt in all of the rounds I could, but even still. He didn't do anywhere near enough. However, Leonard was still a very capable fighter. This fight should be mentioned more often as a good Tommy win.

Obviously, a classic, and regrettably my first time seeing it, in it's entirety. I never liked Leonard but I always loved Hearns.

I've heard tales of how this is a great tactical fight between two ATGs. The first 5 are clear Hearns rounds where he dominated Leonard with his jab on the front-foot, then Leonard lands a bunch of power shots in the 6th. The roles reverse, with Leonard on the front-foot where Tommy out-boxes Leonard. In round 13 Leonard hurts him again and unloads a torrent of punches until Tommy is stopped in the penultimate round.

Ray Leonard was one of the most complete fighters ever. Whilst I feel like Tommy can beat him, I'd always pick Leonard to stop him in a 15 round fight, he would've in the rematch too. His stamina was unholy, and his finishing was as brutal as an executioner. He was basically a boxer-puncher who loved to stand toe-to-toe and swarm. Great speed, great power, great chin and could throw every punch properly. One of the best to ever do it.

Hearns was well... you'll see what I think of him. I will say that I agreed with Clancy when he said Hearns had come in too light and needed that extra weight to give himself a better foundation, and that he'd shaved a little too much off.

    Open scoring sucks balls.

    Orlando Canizales vs Junior Jones

    Cani : Jones

1: 9 - 10 (Cani immediately aggressive but Jones pumping jab)
    2: 9 - 10 (Jones landing rights)
    3: 10 - 9 (Close and action packed)
    4: 9 - 10 (Chin from Cani)
    5: 10 - 9 (Cani with lovely right hand)
    6: 9 - 10 (Jones with just a bit more)
    7: 9 - 10 (Cani not cutting Jones off)
    8: 9 - 10 (Jones in an action round)
    9: 9 - 10 (Jones still keeping center)
    10: 10 - 9 (Cani again very aggressive)
    11: 9 - 10 (Jones with range control)
    12: 9 - 10 (More action)

    TOTAL: 117 - 111 JONES

    Notes:
    • Jones Jr was right on Canizales lack of ring cutting. I think he could have actually got a KO by doing it right, but he didn't.
    • Good action, but easy to score.
    • Jones whining to the ref was awful.

This is an obscure fight but one I was surprised to find. I was a big fan of the exploits of Australia's Hector Thompson back in the day. Man, everytime I picked up a mag he had beaten another world class fighter. So unfortunate to come along at a time when his two title shots were against guys with the names Duran and Cervantes. Also unfortunate to have to live with the fact that two fighters passed away from injuries sustained in bouts with him. Anyways, he was beginning to slip around early '77 and this fight took place in late '78 and at welterweight where he didn't belong. But I still enjoyed seeing him in action.

    Hector Thompson v Greg Stephens

    Round 1: 10-9 Stephens
    Round 2: 10-9 Stephens
    Round 3: 10-9 Thompson
    Round 4: 10-9 Stephens
    Round 5: 10-9 Thompson
    Round 6: 10-9 Stephens
Round 7: 10-7 Stephens (scores a knockdown and also the ref gives Thompson a standing eight count)
    Round 8: 10-9 Thompson
    Round 9: 10-9 Thompson
    Round 10: 10-9 Thompson

Total: 95-93 Stephens (I'm fairly certain by the announcers that it was a 10 point must system in effect, but the ref immediately declared Stephens the winner as was also done in Britain, so he was obviously the sole judge and no score was announced)

I was yelling at the monitor for Thompson to 'get in there', as he seemed to waste a lot of time that he could have been pounding the body. Still, I enjoyed the fight and the film was good quality.

    Wilfredo Benitez vs Roberto Duran

    Benitez : Duran

1: 10 - 9 (Benitez taking it with the right)
2: 9 - 10 (Benitez is cleaner but Duran more active)
    3: 10 - 9 (Benitez simply brilliant)
    4: 10 - 9 (Closer, Benitez slipping by inches)
    5: 10 - 9 (Benitez expertly negating Duran)
6: 10 - 10 (Slower. Duran right evened it for me)
    7: 10 - 9 (Great round, competitive)
    8: 10 - 9 (Benitez again quicker and sharper)
    9: 10 - 9 (Competitve. Duran not effective enough)
    10: 10 - 9 (Benitez keeping to the gameplan)
11: 10 - 9 (Benitez poised in his body work)
    12: 10 - 10 (Duran stunned)
    13: 10 - 10 (Both glancing)
    14: 10 - 9 (Benitez just better)
    15: 10 - 9 (Benitez smashing inside)

    TOTAL: 149 - 139 BENITEZ

    Notes:
    • Technical drubbing and ATG performance. Duran completely negated. Benitez has a very, very good argument for a 150 score
    • Duran was quite flat here.
