That's more or less what ki think happens in that scenario. Except Jones doesn't need to be dropped to go into survival mode, he could just cut and run after getting hit once, clean and hard.

Although I do think a KO is more likely. Jones never really cut and run like a thief, and he was too much of fighter to sign a silent agreement.

It's almost destined to be a very boring fight with both trying to work off the back foot (Spinks is far too patient to give up his game plan) and probably throwing more feints than punches.

But 36 minutes is a long time to avoid a right hand from Spinks. At some point it lands.

    Ismael Laguna v Mando Ramos

Nice, fast tempo to this one. Horrible cuts Ramos suffered. Despite that, I had him leading narrowly at the time of the stoppage.

Laguna was patient and picked his shots well, Ramos fought with urgency and then desperation - a brave defense of his title but he was always on to a loser here.

    1 9-10 (close)
    2 10-9 (Mando is cut)
    3 9-10
    4 9-10 (excellent action)
    5 9-10
    6 10-9
7 10-9 (big round for Laguna)
8 9-10 (good recovery from Ramos; inspected by the ring doctor but allowed to continue)
    9 10-9
    (85-86)
    Laguna TKO Ramos

    Spinks vs Qawi

The first 7 rounds were an absolute clinic in how to beat a pressure fighter by Spinks. He really dazzled and shut down the offence of Qawi. Given how slow a starter Spinks usually is this even more impressive.

His jab and movement were on point. His upper body evasion made it very hard for Qawi to pin him down.

But what impressed me the most was the way he could land the Jinks just above the temple time after time. Qawi really had to think about setting up his attacks which threw him off.

Round 8 saw the knockdown, which looked like a push to me, but it gave Qawi the boost he needed as he took the next 4 rounds on my card. He was the clear ring general and it looked like he slowed Spinks down.

Round 12 saw Spinks fight brilliantly off the ropes and even retake centre ring stopping Qawi in his tracks.

I gave Qawi 13 and 14,which set up the big final round.

But like a champ Spinks got the job done and pounded his way to a close but clear decision. 143-141

Ismael Laguna v Carlos Ortiz 1

Not a great spectacle by any means and definitely not an easy one to score (reflected by the disparity in the judges' scorecards). The film quality didn't help with the engagement either but there were way to many rounds that turned into holdfests.

Glad I've seen it but won't be rushing back to watch it again.

    1 9-10
    2 9-10
    3 10-9
    4 10-9
5 10-9 (good lead rights from Laguna)
6 10-9 (slick counters from Laguna)
    7 9-10
    8 10-9
    9 9-10
    10 10-9
    11 10-9
    12 10-10
    13 10-10
14 9-10 (bit of a hugfest; Ortiz just edged it)
    15 10-9

    Laguna 145-142 Ortiz

Check the official cards if you want to see a disparity: 143-132, 149-137 and... 145-145.

I was just not feeling the fight so perhaps my scoring can be best described as 'indifferent'.

Wow, I loved Laguna's style. Became one of my favourite actually, he uses techniques I've started practicing in the gym.

Ah, now, I didn't say I didn't enjoy Laguna's style but as a spectacle the fight itself didn't do it for me - that's all.

Really enjoyed the Laguna-Ramos fight though.

I loved Laguna vs Ramos vs Saldivar. I thought that Ortiz I was one of the best performances in lightweight history. It's right up there with DeJesus III.

Laguna v Saldivar was a very good one too. I may have to rewatch Laguna-Ortiz 1 but got Ortiz-Laguna 3 to watch first.

Well, i didn't like the quality of the first. I don't like the fact that the third is basically extended highlights. I wish Laguna-Elorde was out there. Same with the Ishimatsu fight.

Laguna is like a half mystery to me. I've seen enough for my interest to be piqued and to have a good idea of him, but there's so much more that we could see.

I tend to think he's a bit of an unheralded beast at BW, FW and LW.

Laguna had started looking ragged by the time he took on Buchanan.
