 I remember you couldn't be both you had to pick one or the other. I loved them both but there was a bit of a tribal thing there. Most folks I knew were for Tyson

Haha most were for Tyson against Bruno, Holyfield and Lewis. The idea he was shot to the point where the victories meant nothing came much later.

I mean I'm sure if he'd have beaten Williams he would have gotten a shot at Vitali and most would have probably backed him for that as well lol.

After the thrilling comeback KO last night, I wanted to watch some Sasha, and a post in general was enough to get me on it quickly.

Awesome little fight. Good performance from both men, too. Takam has been in two sleeper fights IMO; this and Chisora. Brutal KO in this one. I thought Povetkin lost some early rounds, Takam's boxer-puncher style and counter punching gave Sasha some issues, but Pov was just being out-worked. After round four, Povetkin had found the range he worked best from and landed the harder, cleaner shots. Especially with his left hook.

Povetkin has very good form. His jab is steady, refined but heavy. He also had an excellent left hook and can throw it upstairs and down, having it ready to snap off at any moment. Seen in the KO. I also like his overhand right, but he doesn't use it much here, smaller opponent and whatnot.

Takam showed good heart here, and he fought a fun fight.

One of Povetkin's best wins, and supposed to be a good fight. Never saw this one before.

The first two rounds were slow. Technical. It was typical of two out-boxers in an open stance trying to get their jab going, with less workrate on the second than the first. It's a weird watch given their styles. Povetkin had a bit more success all together. After the first two, it livened up and the pair started exchanging hooks. Rounds three and four were fought up close and personal, with Povetkin's better technique getting the better of it. In rounds five and six, Chagaev found a nice home for his straight left, as he nailed Povetkin more than once with it, rocking him. He took over around the mid point, which means he took it pretty wide on my card, despite it being a fun, competitive fight.

Povetkin didn't look good here, especially considering its one of his best wins. Chagaev really made him work for it, but he looked a lot better here than he did vs Huck. Although in round three, Povetkin landed a shifting left uppercut exactly like the one which iced Whyte on Saturday. Awesome stuff. Povetkin is an underrated fighter, and one tough hombre.

    Danny Lopez v Mike Ayala

Wow, can't believe we have no history on this fight. This really needs to be looked at. Fight of the year back in the day and it is worthy of it. A note to all though when watching it. The San Antonio crowd screams at anything Mike Ayala throws, so don't be swayed. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 2: 10-9 Ayala
    Round 3: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 4: 10-9 Ayala
    Round 5: 10-9 Ayala
    Round 6: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 7: 10-8 Lopez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 8: 10-9 Ayala
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 11: 10-8 Lopez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 12: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 15: Lopez KOs Ayala

Total (through 14 completed rounds): 136-130 Lopez (actual scores: 135-132 and 135-129 both for Lopez and an amazing 134-131 for Ayala)

Where to begin? First of all, again I say, Carlos Padilla was the worst referee I've ever seen. Never understood how he could keep drawing the plum assignments. He always had the look of utter confusion on his face. And it was no different here. His 11th round screwup cost Lopez an earlier evening than he got. He counts Ayala out and stops the fight and then, instead of holding his ground he gets into a discussion with the timekeeper and he restarts the fight. But hold on a minute, that was actually the second screwup. In round 7 when Lopez drops Ayala, I happened to think to myself (after years of watching these tussles) 'that seemed like a long count'. So i rewound to the knockdown and counted it off. Yep, he was down for 12 seconds. Hey, where was his buddy the timekeeper now?. The two of them were probably scared senseless with the very vocal San Antonio crowd. Anyways, his pathetic officiating didn't detract from what was an outstanding fight.

Scar, this was one of the fights we reviewed for the Fight of the Week threads that @mrkoolkevin set up. I'll dig out the link.

    @scartissue - here's my RBR for Lopez-Ayala:

    Danny Lopez v Mike Ayala

    R1: 10-9
    R2: 9-10
(difficult to score - Lopez busier, Ayala with the more eye catching combos)
    R3: 9-10
(Ayala's strategy is to box off the ropes, confident that he is better defensively. Lopez still the busier but less certain of how to tackle Mike) 9-10
    R4: 9-10
(the pattern continues. Mostly punches landing on the arms from Lopez, excellent defense from Ayala and then short explosive bursts that means little Mikey edges the round)
    R5: 9-10
(Lopez needs to change up his attack; Ayala feels like he's controlling the exchanges, even on the back foot)
    R6: 10-9
(close but thought Lopez was more effective in this round, but maybe in comparison with the last few)
    R7: 10-8
(Lopez takes control amd turns the fight his way, bringing Ayala off the ropes and fighting in ring centre. Lopez landing harder and more frequently now. Then, all of a sudden, Ayala drops to one knee).
    R8: 9-10
(close - Lopez takes the first minute, Ayala taking punishment but Mike comes back hard - tremendous round)
    R9: 10-9
(close again - Lopez seems to be landing the more damaging shots, Ayala fights back hard though. Superb stuff)
    R10: 10-9
(Ayala starts well but is starting to tire now. The off the ropes strategy is not working like it was and Lopez is landing consistently. Clearer round for Lopez)
    R11: 10-8
(the continual pressure from Lopez is starting to take its toll on Ayala and again Ayala drops to one knee from a relatively innocuous punch. Then chaos - Padilla looks like he is waving the fight off and Lopez's seconds enter the ring before Padilla calls it on again - and then the round is over)
    R12: 10-9
(Lopez dominating most of the round, using his jab to control the distance. Ayala landing more sporadically but having no discernible effect. Ayala comes on in the last minute but not enough to take the round)
    R13: 10-9
(close and Ayala fought back hard towards the end of the round but Lopez is doing more damage overall)
    R14: 10-9
(this is reminding me of Mancini-Kim, the bigger, stronger fighter is on top, but Ayala is doing just enough to keep it competitive)
    (135-129)
    R15: Lopez KO Ayala
(Lopez stops Ayala after working him over for the first minute or so of the round)

Thanks, Jel, didnt catch this first time around with your FOTW. I liked your take on the 2nd round. You were clearly watching and not listening to the commentators. After the round ended I heard Tim Ryan saying what a great round for Ayala and I blurted out, "What, I barely gave the round to him (almost scored it even)." Clearly a case of announcers getting caught up in the crowds screams. But a great fight and thanks for the link to the FOTW.

I don't think Michael Katsidis was ever not in a war. I think he could go down to the corner grocer and come home with a black eye. And his fight with Juan Diaz was no different. Here we go-go

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 3: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 4: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 5: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 6: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 7: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 8: 10-9 Diaz
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Katsidis
    Round 11: 10-9 Katsidis
    Round 12: 10-9 Katsidis

Total: 117-113 Diaz (actual scores: 116-112 and 115-113 both for Diaz and 115-113 for Katsidis)

Phone booth warfare and there was not one round that was overwhelmingly for the other fighter. Just a damn good fight.

Had this one on my list for a while now and I figured it should be a good-un. If Chacon's lightweight venture was the standard of those guys, then this one should be awesome.

Wow! Some of this action was insane. I'd love to see what Scartissue and Jel have to say about this. My take was that the younger, fresher and heavier guy was taking it to Boza, and out-working him in the process. However, in round four, Boza rallied with a sharp three-piece combination which stopped Guy dead in his tracks. After that, Boza's relaxed style and experience paved the way. I did enjoy the defence he exhibited against the ropes, brilliant slips and head-movement. A little throwback to his amateur career, I guess. The commentary likened Villegas to Mancini, and I can't disagree. He brought an extraordinary amount of pressure.

Rounds three, four and five looked straight out of the Chacon fights.

George, I scored this about a year ago. This is what I wrote:

Cornelius Boza-Edwards v Guy Villegas. It would remind you of Boza against John Verderosa. A young hotshot trying to take down the veteran, only the veteran had just too much in the tank. Villegas was all speed and got off to a great start.

    Round 1: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 2: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Boza
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Villegas
    Round 7: TKO for Boza

Total: (through 6 completed rounds) 59-57 Villegas

Although I had Villegas up at the end, never at any time would one get the feeling that Villegas could last. But still a good contrast in the speed of Villegas against the power of Boza.

Sorry guys, didn't end up scoring this in the end - just watched it and enjoyed it. I think I had seen this before but couldn't find any notes so watched it again anyway.

Villegas definitely took it to Boza which was either gutsy or stupid (maybe both) but like you said, Scar, even if this was close on the cards, after about 4 rounds Boza was having the bigger impact with his punches and it didn't look like Villegas would last and indeed, he got absolutely ripped apart in that 7th round.

I was wondering today whether Boza was THE most exciting fighter of the 80s. I know there are a lot of contenders for that title but all his career highlights came in that decade and for consistently good fights, he seems to have an endless procession of humdingers - from Arguello in 1980 all the way through to his latter career.

Making the Countries thread actually come from me wondering who were the top three Brits for entertainment. The three I got down to were Boza, Thompson and Benn.

    Gaby Canizales v Bernardo Pinango

Never watched this fight before because I was so disappointed in the results, but here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Pinango
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Gaby
    Round 4: 10-9 Pinango
    Round 5: 10-9 Pinango
    Round 6: 10-9 Gaby
    Round 7: 10-9 Gaby
    Round 8 - 15: all for Pinango

Total: 147-139 Pinango (actual scores: 146-142, 148-144 and 147-138 all for Pinango)

I was disappointed but mostly disgusted with this fight as this was not the Gaby Canizales I knew. The commentating team got it right. Gaby never threw a combo and kept going backwards. Pinango should have had rope burns on his back from being grilled there. Instead, the boxer forced the fight. I have rarely been so disappointed with a performance. Gaby should have had him out of there by the mid-rounds.
