Luf, if you like Spider, I recently scored his title fight with Gene Fullmer. Here is what I wrote:

Gene Fullmer v Spider Webb II

    Round 1: 10-9 Webb
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 6: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 9: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 10: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 11: 10-9 Webb
    Round 12: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 13: 10-9 Webb
    Round 14: 10-9 Fullmer
    Round 15: 10-9 Fullmer

Total: 147-141 Fullmer (actual scores: 148-136, 150-132 and 147-141 all for Fullmer)

Not a spine-tingling fight if you're looking for excitement. Spider Webb was so talented but Fullmer's rough-house style just negated anything Spider could do from the outside. And then on the inside - which was not Spider's territory - he was up against one of the great maulers of the game. Wished the fight film was a bit sharper, but it wasn't really bad considering some of them out there.

Nothing. I don't maintain correspondence with him.

Those quick feet and quick hands made him a tough fight for anyone. With the right manager he'd have looked like an ATG, but anyone who could successfully get inside is probably always going to beat him.

    Tyson vs Douglas

I usually watch this from the perspective of seeing how good Douglas was on the night. Tokyo Douglas and all that (Montreal Duran deserves a mention).

But tonight I just watched Tyson. And actually if you watch this fight from the Tyson Pov it's incredibly boring and lack lustre.

No body attack, no combinations, no head movement, no snap, no sharpness, no fire. I mean he spends most of the night walking forward and initiating clinches.

Round 3 he tries to throw a couple of leaping left hooks, but they're telegraphed a mile away and Douglas easily circles away from them.

Tyson took his beating, but he didn't look like someone trying to portray himself the champion of the world.

He didn't even head hunt with the kind of ferocity that made him so dangerous against Bruno.

He does land an uppercut in the 8th, which probably should have ended the night, but that's because by that point he was so impotent in the clinches Douglas had no qualms standing and trading up close.

Tyson is awful in this fight. I mean Tua vs Lewis awful.

Still a great victory, but I don't necessarily think it's a great performance.

Luf, I scored this about a year ago. This is what I wrote:

Anybody ever sit down and actually score the Tyson - Douglas bout rather than just sit back and take in the amazement of seeing Tyson getting thumped?. I saw some blurbs on the fight and never really noticed the scores. Larry Rozadilla had it 88-82 for Douglas through 9 completed rounds, which is sensible. However, the 2 Asian judges had it 86-86 Even and 87-86 in favor of Tyson. I had to sit down on this one.

    Round 1: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 2: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 5: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 6: 10-9 Tyson
    Round 7: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 8: 10-8 Tyson (scores a knockdown)
    Round 9: 10-9 Douglas
    Round 10: KO for Douglas

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-84 Douglas

Can't see what fight the Asian judges were watching. I know there was a lot of talk of King getting to them, but I doubt that. No one gave Douglas a chance, so there wouldn't be any reason to put anyone in the pocket.

There doesn't seem to be much history on this fight, but today I scored the Reggie Johnson v Steve Collins bout for the vacant middleweight title. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 2: 10-9 Collins
    Round 3: 10-9 Collins
    Round 4: 10-9 Johnson
Round 5: 9-8 Johnson (Johnson wins the round but both fighters deducted 1 point for low-blows)
    Round 6: 10-9 Collins
    Round 7: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 8: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 9: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 10: 10-9 Johnson
    Round 11: 10-9 Collins
    Round 12: 10-9 Johnson

Total: 115-111 Johnson (actual scores: 115-114 and 115-113 both for Johnson and a score of 114-114 Even for a MD win for Johnson)

I had it a bit wider than the judges but I was more impressed with Johnson's accuracy and how he wasted very little. Collins was dogged right to the end and the judges clearly saw this. Not great, but a good fight. A number of low blows, elbows and heads clunking but they both hung tough.

Man, this has to be the longest drought ever on this thread. 2 days without a post. Wow! No matter. I was on another site and saw this match being discussed. It was quite good. Freddie Castillo defending his flyweight title against Eloncio Mercedes. Here we go.

    Round 1: 10-9 Castillo
    Round 2: 10-9 EM
    Round 3: 10-9 EM
    Round 4: 10-9 EM
    Round 5: 10-9 EM
    Round 6: 10-9 EM
    Round 7: 10-9 EM
    Round 8: 10-9 EM
    Round 9: 10-9 Castillo
Round 10: 9-9 Even (1 point deducted from Mercedes for spinning his opponent)
    Round 11: 10-9 EM
    Round 12: 10-9 EM
    Round 13: 10-9 Castillo
    Round 14: 10-10 Even
    Round 15: 10-9 Castillo

Total: 145-140 Mercedes (actual scores: 145-140 and 145-139 both for Mercedes and a 144-143 for Castillo)

This may be one of those fights where you might want to sit back and just enjoy it. When you look at the scorecards, you might scrutinize the scorecard for Castillo, but in actuality, it might not be that strange because this is one of those fights where you ask yourself what you are more impressed with. Cleaner punches or harder punches. I tend to lean clean punches, thus, my score. But an enjoyable fight.

I should also mention, the 10th round point deduction was a bit bogus. Mercedes dodged and spun Castillo into a corner and countered. I consider this to be a good, slick move. Frankie Crawford was known for this on the west coast and was allowed to do so. Again, I like this move and laud it, so I think it was very harsh.

Thanks for keeping things going, Scar. I'll be posting again when it's Friday night and I can spend some time watching some fights. Busy week at work and at home and I've been watching The Last Dance instead of fights.

No worries, it was just unusual for this thread. I was feeling like I was in an empty room yelling, "Hellllooooooo!" Because I was the only one that didn't get the memo. LOL!

I checked out the James Page v Jose Luis Lopez welterweight title fight today. It was decent but very frustrating to watch for several reasons.

    Round 1: 10-9 Page
    Round 2: 10-9 Page
    Round 3: 10-8 Lopez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 5: 10-9 Page
    Round 6: 10-9 Page
    Round 7: 10-9 Page
    Round 8: 10-9 Page
Round 9: 10-8 Lopez (wins the round and receives a knockdown call, but Page clearly slipped. If I had the choice I would only give him a 10-9 but am following the ref's call)
Round 10: 10-10 Even (Tony Perez halts the contest to clean up the Budweiser logo which has turned the canvas into a skating rink, but doesn't tell the timekeeper to stop the clock and the round is about 30 seconds short)
    Round 11: 10-9 Page
    Round 12: 10-9 Page

Total: 115-112 Page (actual scores: 115-112, 115-111 and 116-111 all for Page)

Lopez made this very frustrating to me for simply not throwing punches. It seemed every time he threw something in earnest at Page, he hurt him. The fight was his to lose and he did an admirable job losing it. Perez screwed up big time also for that preposterous 'knockdown' in the 9th and for the abbreviated round in the 10th. The commentators seemed amazed by his screwups, but it seemed normal to me with Perez refereeing.
