Very good fight, truly one of the best Heavyweight fights of the 90s, too close to call

Just watched this because of this recommendation.

    It is an excellant fight.

I was really impressed by Yuh in it for a few reasons.
One, his mental fortitude was astonishing, he faced an opponent who constantly pushed him back and took everything he threw at him, yet Yuh never wilted once.
Two, his little shifts in range were great, he slid back to create punching room expertly and like a veteran he closed the distance between them when he wanted to nullify De Marco's shots. Really impressed by that.
Three, his conditioning. He fought in explosive spurts and on the back foot, he needed to be in great shape.

De Marco on the other hand really just did not give up constantly going forward throwing lots and lots of punches. He didn't slow down one iota in the whole fight. And as SS says he was throwing 200 plus every round almost.

The fight really picked up in the 7th through to 9th with some great exchanges, then Yuh recharged his batteries and started rumbling in the 12th until the final bell and these rounds are among some of the best you will ever see, in particular the 12th.

    Yuh : 2,3,5,7,8,9,12,13,14,15
    Demarco: 1,4,6,10,11
    Total: 145-140 Yuh (10-5)

The scorecard doesn't represent how close it was. De Marco was very competitve in every round and busy but Yuh seemed to land the cleaner punches throughout.

Luis Ibarra vs. Betulio Gonzalez: 144-143 Ibarra
    Gonzalez: 2,4,8,12,13 and 14.
    Ibarra: 1,3,7,,9,10,11 and 15.
    Rounds 5 and 6 even.

    SS card above

Good fight this one, it settled into a rhythm from the first round that didnt change until the last 5-6 rounds.

Ibarra impressed me, he seemed to be a organised counter-puncher who drew the attacks. At his best he worked the jab and looked for openings to launch his counter attacks and combo's, although he did lead at times I felt he tended to lunge in with his left hand and left himself open. When he was cornered he fought his way out well and his angle work was superb.

Ibarra to me was the ring general for the majority of the fight. He controlled the 'when and where' throughout. He may not have landed a lot but he controlled the bout and stopped Gonzlez from doing much. To me Gonzalez was fighting the wrong fight he was applying pressure but wasn't able to get the dividends, his pressure was too slow and he was reluctant to put his shots together. He either had to go all out on the pressure on that front or draw leads from Ibarra and counter.

In the last third Gonzalez started to draw the leads and ocunter and did much better

    Thanks McGrain for uploading this

Sorrry for rushed post in a hurry,

    My scorecard

    Ibarra : 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,12
    Gonzalez: 9,11,13,14,15
    Total: 145-140 Ibarra (10-5)

I'd be really interested in hearing SS thoughts on this fight as ourt scorecard differs a good bit (as usual) and also anyone elses opinion.

Did you gain a new appreciation for Yuh G? Did he show you something you didn't think he possessed in previous fights you had seen of him?

By the way, our scorecards are fairly similar for this one. Only differences are that I had round 4 even, round six to Yuh, and round 14 to De Marco.

When I get a bit of spare time I'll give this another look and get back to you.

I got to say though, I'm an unabashed Betulio fan, so I may have been looking to give him some rounds here. I do remember thinking that Ibarra clearly deserved the win, despite the closeness of my scorecard.

Yeh he did impress me. I have seen a fair bit of him so he didn't show me much new just I really liked his spatial awareness in this one.

I was watching Ibarra a bit more than usual as I wanted to get a look at him and in the later rounds I think I may have given Gonzalez a few rounds that were close just to make the fight seem closer. Despite Ibarra winning clearly it was a good fight.

Being a Gonzalez fan is a raw deal, he is such a frustrating fighter to watch.

    Lopez-Alvarez II.

First up, what a great fight. Haven't seen it for ages and had forgotten. Superb fight. Pretty much as good as anything i've seen below Bantam. Great fight. Alvarez is a really good fighter. I never really realised how good he was, but having watched him in twice with Lopez, I think he's excellent now. A really good horrible little fighter.

    I had it a draw.

    Lopez: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9
    Alvarez: 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 12

So I got Alvarez hauling it in for a draw down the straight. Alvarez is just so persistent in those rounds, he won't go away. He wins those rounds by the slenderest of margins, in fact Lopez looks the classier fighter in all three, it's just Alvarez is there clipping shots in, persisting. ]

Key rounds are 3 and 8. 3, I think could go to Lopez, seriously. On clean punching, I very nearly gave it to him. This is odd because Pachecho didn't even give Lopez this round, and he'll give Lopez any round he doesn't get dropped in usually, but I really think having watched this back that it is a nose-hair type round. I think the reason it near-universally goes to Alvarez is that it feels so like an Alvarez round, it feels like he's taking over, it's his type of fight, the type of round he won hands down in the first fight, even if he actually lost it on clean punching, arguably. Anyway, doesn't matter, because I couldn't quite get away from scoring it to Alvarez, and nor could the judges. 8 is maybe the most important round on my card. Not much happens, but it is the beginning of the thrilling "mess" they bomb in on and I gave it to Alvarez on nothng more but aggression - a round that would have been scored even probably in an earlier era.

So basically, despite my drawn card, I have no complaints with the Lopez win. Draw would have been the ideal result, but a Lopez win is no problem to my eyes at all. I can see why judges would have given him nearly any one of the rounds between 8 and 12 even though he only got one on my card.

Alvarez never really lived up to the potential he showed against Lopez though. He became a lazy fat *******.

How far past his prime do you think Lopez was at this point, Mcgrain?.

Not at all in my opinion. I never liked that argument, frankly. His high point as a combination puncher may have been against Preecha in 97, but he was absolutely superb versus Charoen and Sanchez both, that was 97. I think you could argue, maybe, that he wasn't at the ideal point in his career to take on Alvarez and maybe he could have nicked 10, 11 or 12 had he been 28 instead of 32 or whatever he was, but that's stretching a point (one that i've seen stretched on behalf of Moore for Marciano, in fairness).

Lopez got better at the things experienced fighters are better at and worse at the thing young fighters are better at, but I don't think he was past-prime in any real sense.

Lopez did have a really long prime for a midget fighter, 32 is old.I guess it was the dedication and lack of punishment he took up until those two fights.

Preecha was 96, not 97, my mistake.
