Canelo Alvarez v Caleb Plant (unification)

    Round 1: 10-9 Plant
    Round 2: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 3: 10-9 Plant
    Round 4: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 5: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 6: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 7: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 8: 10-9 Canelo
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Canelo
Round 11: Canelo drops Plant twice and stops him.

Total through 10 completed rounds: 98-93 Canelo (actual scores: 96-94, 97-93 and 98-92 all for Canelo)

Plant started out like he was going to fight a cagey fight - and he was - but you also have to fight. I felt he could have showed a bit more aggression out there, but then he was the one sampling Canelo's punches. I thought it was headed towards the one-sided decision, but Canelo showed he is something when he gets a man hurt. The commentators were asking him afterwards he he is going to light heavy. At 5'7 1/2" I think it would be a mistake, but who knows?

    Hozumi Hasegawa vs Jun Toriumi

    OPBF Title

    HH : JT

1: 10 - 9 Hasegawa touching up, landing leads. Both men have similar styles.
2: 10 - 9 Hasegawa clever and cat-like with his counters and set ups. Exchnage at the end of round.
3: 9 - 10 Toriumi landing overhand lefts. Close round in terms of effect.
    4: 10 - 9 Close. Heating up now.
    5: 9 - 10 HASEGAWA ROCKED! Lovely short left.

    48 - 47

6: 10 - 9 Awesome exchange! Hasegawa's beserk combo just takes it for me, though I had JT winning before. Close overall.
    7: 10 - 9 Hasegawa taking over a bit here.
    8: 10 - 9 Toriumi waiting too long.
9: 10 - 9 Toriumi landing a body shot - best of the round - but it doesn't overrule Hozumi's total work. Hasegawa cut.
    10: 10 - 9 Hasegawa is a ****ing machine.

    50 - 45

    TOTAL: 98 - 92 HASEGAWA

    Notes:
    • Dual southpaw battle!
    • More competitive than my scorecard indicates.
    • Toriumi is better than his gangly presence suggests. He is a stolid ring general with a heavy jab. He's also really big for Bantam.
    • Hasegawa's punch variety when in full throttle is incredible to watch. Amazing co-ordination.
    • Great show of respect at the end from both.

Michael Dokes vs Mike Weaver 1

Dokes drops Weaver with a hook, weaver gets up and Dokes throws a lot of shots (20+), some miss, some land, ref stops the fight, chaos ensues

    Dokes KO1

I know this is short but whenever Weaver gets bought up this fight usually does as well. Now the question, premature stoppage? I would say yes but Weaver did zero favors to himself by throwing nothing after getting dropped. At the very least clinch and throw some body shots. This was also shortly after the Mancini-Kim fight so I'm sure tensions were high

    Exactly.

I always coached my guys that the ref can’t read their mind and if they’re going to stand there and let the other guy throw at them (even if everything doesn’t land or doesn’t land solid) and not do ANYTHING back — clinch, throw a counter, use some upper-body movement — to demonstrate that they’re OK then they have no reason to complain if it gets stopped.

Is he really under 5'8?! Wow - I didn't realise. Still, hard to see where else he can go now except up.

    Canelo vs Plant

I had Plant ahead 97-93 going into the 11th...
    Plant 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9
    Canelo 2, 8, 10

Plant wouldn't have got the decision officially anyway. Canelo missed or got blocked on so many punches...
Plant controlled the distance and action for the most part and decreasingly as the rounds went on.

Canelo a great pressure fighter. Exactly the result I thought.

Actually I bet on a Canelo stoppage 7-9... Should have went with my gut and went with a bit later...

TBI, I agree with you that many of Canelo's shots were blocked, but when that happens, you have to make the other guy pay and I don't think Plant was doing that. I really felt he should have taken a bit of initiative because I felt Canelo was taking these rounds on work-rate. But regardless, I respect your opinion.

Gil Turner v Italo Scortichini I

@William Walker put me onto this. A good fight which appears to have been scored on the Australian 11 point system, which was used in California and the Midwest at the time. Here we go.

    Round 1: 6-5 Turner
    Round 2: 6-5 Italo
    Round 3: 5.5 - 5.5 Even
    Round 4: 6-5 Turner
    Round 5: 6-5 Turner
    Round 6: 6-5 Turner
    Round 7: 6-5 Turner
    Round 8: 6-5 Turner
    Round 9: 6-5 Turner
    Round 10: 6-5 Turner

    Total: 58.5 - 51.5 Turner (actual scores: 57-43, 57-43 and 56-44 all for Turner)

To begin, I can't make heads nor tails of the official's scores. Is there some other scoring system I'm not privy to? Haven't a clue, but suffice to say 8-1-1 for Turner. William, I had it wider than you did, but I felt there were so many close rounds in this fight that I can see your score. If Scortichini had more pop in his punches, who knows how far he could have gone. I also thought Turner's body punches paid dividends late as I saw Scortichini bending at the waist under those shots. Again, regardless of my score, Italo fought hard and kept every round close.

Good observation. I hadn't noticed that he wilted from the body shots because of turner. But now that I think about it I agree. There were some close rounds but I understand your wider margin. Italo was sticking to those lone counterpunches while Gil on the other hand is a windmill ever moving forward, trying to mow you down. I viewed Turner as heavily dominant in the last three rounds. Again, good good fight.

I haven't seen them actually. I wanted to, but I am experiencing problems with my boxer account lately.

Yeah I agree Plant didn't make him pay as much as he should have. Most of the rounds were very close and could have gone either way. I just saw the control and distance.
