D, I would also suggest Iran Barkley v Michael Olajide. A shorter fight but man, was that fun.

My favorite from that division then other than Hagler was Hamsho. God what a chin. And a ballsy, combative cuss he was too.

    Don Lee vs Tony Sibson

    1 Sibson 10-8 knockdown
    2 Lee
    3 Lee 10-6 3 knockdowns
    4 Sibson
    5 Lee
    6 Lee
    7 Sibson
    8 Lee Winner TKO

    66-63 Lee

Really enjoyed this fight thanks to @Jel for recommending it to me.

This was my first time seeing Don Lee fight, and my first impression seeing him in the first round. Was that he reminded me of a Middleweight version of Carl The Truth Williams.

But after Don Lee got knocked down by a shotgun jab in the 1st round, Don Lee switched to Southpaw in the 2nd round. Which really threw me off, because i wasn't expecting him to be a switch hitter.

But he was actually pretty good in the Southpaw stance, and Tony Sibson had alot of problems dealing with it. And who wouldn't ? a 6'2 Middleweight who can switch to Southpaw with ease ?

Don Lee from then on seemed to control the fight from the outside, using his jab well and straight left hand. And he had a big round in the 3rd, flooring Sibson with a straight left. And put him down a further two times.

Tony Sibson to his credit won the 4th round after a torrid 3rd round, but after that the fight went back into the same pattern. With Lee controlling the fight at range in the Southpaw stance.

I thought Sibson landed some solid clean punches in the 7th and i thought he edged that round, based on landing the harder punches.

The 8th round it looked like Sibson might be finally working out Lee, and he started to land some punches. He floored Lee again with another shotgun jab similar to the 1st round knockdown, after the knockdown Sibson piled on the pressure. And i thought Sibson was going to stop him. But then out of nowhere BOOM straight left hand from Lee, and Sibson is stopped.

Great fight and great contrast of styles, i actually didn't know the result. So the ending was a big surprise to me.

Thanks to @George Crowcroft @Jel for the fight suggestions today. This is probably the most fun i've had watching fights in sometime, i didn't really watch alot of boxing in 2021. But i'm back to watching fights again in 2022 and may that long continue.

Greg Page v James 'Quick' Tillis

I was looking for Page v Berbick, but they only had it in highlights. I recall watching Page v Quick back in the day and thought I'd give it another look see.

    Round 1: 10-9 Page
    Round 2: 10-8 Tillis (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Page
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Page
    Round 7: 10-9 Page
Round 8: Page drops and stops Tillis

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-66 Page (actual scores unknown)

It was lively enough for 2 big dudes of the day but Quick always looked to me like he was fatiguing in his fights. I will give him credit for something in his arsenal though, he had one of the best one-two's of his day. I saw him smoke Domingo D'elia, I saw him drop Page and Carl 'The Truth', and I saw him stun Mike Weaver, Marvis Frazier and Tyrell Biggs. He just couldn't put it all together. Page really started finding a home for that right hand in the 7th and took it all the way home in the 8th. One other thing to note was the fact that Quick really took some liberties with Page when he dropped him and when the bell rang ending a couple of rounds. Referee Mark Tessman appeared to be very lenient. Many ref's would have deducted points for some of his offenses.

Don Lee was in a really fun fight with Paul Whittaker, too. If I remember right, his fight with Doug DeWitt was cool too.

Thanks for the suggestion i'll be sure to check them out this week, Don Lee certainly is a unique Middleweight 6'2 who can fight Orthodox/Southpaw.

Another Heavyweight fight i really enjoyed from that era, which not alot of people talk about is Carl Williams vs Jesse Ferguson. I might rewatch that this week since i didn't actually score it when i last watched it few years ago.

Alexis Arguello (c) vs. Bobby Chacon for the WBC super featherweight championship, scheduled for 15 rounds on Nov. 16, 1979, at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

Both guys are hot coming into this one. Alexis is 59-5 and has won 28 of his last 29, with the lone loss a close decision to Vilomar Fernandez is a step up to try things out in lightweight. Bobby is 42-4-1, including 15-1-1 in his last 17, with a split decision loss to Arturo Leon and a technical draw against Bazooka Limon where he was ahead when it was stopped on cuts from a headbutt (would have been a technical decision for Chacon under today’s rules).

Alexis picks up $100K for his sixth defense of the 130-pound championship. Bobby makes $35K.

Round 1 — 10-9 Chacon: Probing round, not a lot happens, Bobby a little busier and lands a clean combo or two.

Round 2 — 10-9 Arguello: Good action round, Alexis gets and advantage of works Chacon over along the ropes pretty good. Bobby suffers a minor cut at the corner of his right eye.

Round 3 — 10-9 Chacon: Bobby is aggressive and lands some blistering combinations as he negotiates his way inside Arguello’s reach.

Round 4 — 10-9 Chacon: The Schoolboy works body and head and seems to really have the range, lot of snappy shots. Seems a smidgen ahead of Arguello at every turn.

Round 5 — 10-9 Chacon: Bobby boxes more and he’s busier, seems to be in command.

Round 6 — 10-9 Arguello: Alexis changes gears. He tightens up his defense and starts working his jab more, then times Chacon with counters. He lands some good shots late and is relentless as he rakes over Chacon and seizes back the momentum.

Round 7 — 10-8 Arguello: Bam. Alexis knocks Bobby down with a left in the first 10 seconds of the round. He follows up and can’t miss, opening up a bad cut along Chacón’s right eye. The doctor checks it out and lets it continue and they go to war … with Alexis landing hard shots at will while Bobby seems to be flailing away with no answers, unable to keep the champion off him. The pace finally slows a bit and then AA hurts Chacon again with a left late in the round.

Scoring: I had it 66-66 at the point of the stoppage. All three judges had it 67-66, with two favoring Chacon.

The referee stops the fight at the end of the round on the advice of the ringside physician due to the cut. Knowing Bobby, maybe he gets back into it if the cut doesn’t happen but it seems to me from the start of the sixth round on the light had come on for Arguello and he had Bobby completely figured out. He just couldn’t miss from that point and everything was landing with authority. And Bobby had no answers.

Good scrap for sure, two major talents meeting in their primes. You see some of the best of each, but I’m left without doubt that Arguello is the superior fighter.

Alexis Arguello vs Jose Luis Ramirez

    Arguello : Ramirez

    1: 10 - 10
    2: 10 - 9 Close
    3: 9 - 10
    4: 10 - 9
    5: 10 - 10

    49 - 48

    6: 8 - 10
    7: 10 - 9 Close
    8: 10 - 9 Very close
    9: 10 - 9
    10: 9 - 10

    47 - 47

    TOTAL: 96 - 95 ARGUELLO

    Notes:
    • A fine, fine fight.
    • Beautiful knockdown by Ramirez.
    • Arguello crossing his left hook over the lead right whilst his feet are inside, like a master. Ramirez noticing that Arguello was crossing his lead with a right hand, so starts feinting the lead and using the hook, whilst baiting with his movement. Amazing Boxing
    • A lot of punches Ramirez threw that caught the commentators eye actually missed. Likewise, Arguello got in a lot of heart shots that were ignored. This one was razor thin and I see nothing controversial with it.

    Carl Williams vs Larry Holmes

    1 Williams
    2 Williams
    3 Even
    4 Holmes
    5 Williams
    6 Williams
    7 Holmes
    8 Holmes
    9 Holmes
    10 Williams
    11 Williams
    12 Holmes
    13 Williams
    14 Holmes
    15 Holmes

    143-143 Draw

I've only seen this fight once and it was years ago and i never scored it, my impression was the 1st time i watched it. Was that Carl Williams won the fight, having watched it again i scored it a draw.

I remembered Williams dominating the first half of the fight, and Holmes dominating the championship rounds. But when i watched it again that wasn't quite the case.

Williams for certain won the early rounds outjabbing Larry Holmes, but Larry Holmes still kept it somewhat competitive in the early going. Because at times Williams would only just throw the jab, and i think Holmes nicked some of the early rounds with his right hand and body shots.

The 9th round was Holmes best round of the fight as he hurt Williams with a body shot, and landed some good right hands that may of stunned Williams. But i felt like after Holmes after having few strong rounds 7, 8, 9. He allowed the momentum to shift back to Williams. As Williams outjabbed Holmes from the outside again.

Now going into the 12th i remembered it as Holmes dominating the last 4 rounds, but that wasn't quite the case. Yes Holmes upped the pace and landed some good body shots, but he certainly didn't dominate. It was more that Williams coasted maybe thinking he'd won the fight, although i still think Williams won the 13th round. But Holmes for me won 3 out of the last 4 rounds, to do enough for a draw on my card.

Final thoughts there was atleast 2 rounds that could of gone either, as you can see i scored the 3rd round even. As i couldn't split them in that round.

I think if anyone scores this fight, it's all down to how many rounds you thought Holmes won in the first half of the fight. The 1st half of the fight was alot tougher to score than the 2nd half for me.

    German Torres v Eleoncio Mercedes

    Round 1: 10-9 Mercedes (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Mercedes
    Round 4: 10-9 Torres
    Round 5: 10-9 Mercedes
    Round 6: 10-9 Torres
    Round 7: 10-9 Torres
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
Round 9: Torres drops and stops Mercedes

Total through 8 completed rounds: 77-77 Even (actual scores unknown)

This was just a good old throwback to the fights at the Olympic. Two world-class flyweights giving it their all before the pro-latin audience (moreso for the Mexican Torres). Rounds 1 and 6 were toughies to score for what occurs. In the 1st, Torres gives Mercedes a going over but towards the end Mercedes drops Torres. Torres carried most of the freight that round and I exercised the 10 point must where I was not going to give Mercedes a 10-8 just for the KD. Round 6 was another where Mercedes battled back after a rough start. These two showed real heart but I think Torres did himself a disservice by not working the body, which he is very adept at. Instead he went head-hunting and we got a good show but he made it hard work for himself. But a nice fight for us.
