Note: Beautiful pressure-jabbing from Mike here, it reminds me of a much more skillful, faster & elusive version of Mercer against Lewis. Tragically, & still to my great annoyance, this fight was cruelly cut short to 12 rounds from the original 15, just the day before the fight! This was due to the pointless demands of the WBC & WBA, against the will of the IBF. :-(

    Round 1: Galento 10-9

    Round 2: Louis 10-8

    Round 3: Galento 10-8

Round 4: Louis brutally ends it, with the ref jumping in as Galento collapses to his knees against the ropes.

Johnny Saxton v Joe Miceli 1950

Consistent, solid action for all 10 rounds in this one. Both guys threw beautiful combinations throughout. Miceli was a tough kid and Saxton had a great chin also.

Saxton had the slight edge in power but I thought Miceli threw better combinations catching Johnny with strafing uppercuts on the way in, and double left hooks to body & head.

Saxton probably pulled it out in the last round but both fighters were obviously exhausted and with good reason. Great fight.

    Total: 7-3 Witherspoon

Note: Many rounds were very close, but i thought Spoon took it, due to his more accurate punching & due to him landing more powerpunches. Also, i thought the difference in accuracy was greatly aided by Spoon's good use of his quality block, which allowed him to block many jabs on his gloves.

A couple nights ago I watched Griffith-Paret III, the infamous fight where Paret loses his life.

It was a pretty decent action fight; I thought Griffith had it all the way with the exception of the very hard kockdown he suffered via a short left hook in round 6. Other than that, Paret looked slow and behind a step.

How much of this is due to Paret taking such an unholy beating at the hands of Gene Fullmer a scant few weeks earlier? No one can know I guess, but he looked tired and spent.

A word too, about the belated stoppage. Yes, Ruby Goldstein was an agregious referee, one of the very worst, but having now seen the stoppage in its full context and having the benefit of finally seeing the rest of the fight, I wonder if it was truly just that one last barrage that did the ultimate damage. Contary to what I've read before, Paret's head did NOT smash repeatedly against the turnbuckle, causing damage there.

The fight was stopped several punches too late, I'm not disputing that. Just the way he wilted after that first right hand and seeing how flat he'd been all night, I am left wondering if something terrible might not have happened to him anyway. Maybe not that night, but soon after.

Morbid thing to think about I suppose.

I score it exactly the same but with the even round just in favor of Lewis.

I can see why you score round 2 for Lewis, because he carefully controlled most of the round, but i scored it as an even round, due to Mercer rocking Lewis against the ropes then following up a bit. I remember the two commentators scoring round 2 for Mercer, but i had it a draw.

Sanders vs Valdez. Sanders showing that explosive counter punching style in the southpaw stance. he was a very good fighter in his day. he had underrated technical skill here imo

    Quarry vs Miteff and Daniels

    Leonard vs hearns II
