I love Thompson fights. Such a monster puncher, a gutsy guy and both easy to hit and easy to hurt.

I knew Leo pretty well when I boxed out of the Al Davies Club in Tacoma. One of the nicest people I've met in any walk of life.

His killer instinct went after the Watson fight. That’s why he had so many horrible narrow points wins, just doing enough to win but trying not to hurt his opponent significantly. He just could finish anyone anymore.

Just watched this fight for the first time after seeing your write up.

    Freddie Pendleton vs Rafael Ruelas

    1 10-7 Pendleton two knockdowns
    2 Ruelas
    3 Ruelas
    4 Ruelas
    5 Pendleton
    6 Ruelas
    7 Ruelas
    8 Ruelas
    9 Ruelas
    10 Ruelas
    11 Ruelas
    12 Ruelas

    116-110 Ruelas

I thought this was a comfortable points win for Ruelas, he just simply outworked Pendleton in most of the rounds. The fight was a good one with good action, but Ruelas was doing most of the work, as Pendleton done too much posing and not enough work.

A few things to note i really liked Goosen's speech in the corner, he really kept Ruelas motivated. The 9th round should of been a knockdown for Pendleton, but even if it had been scored. I wouldn't of gave Pendleton a 10-8 round as Ruelas won 2:50 of the round.

This fight actually reminded me of a fight i watched awhile ago Troy Dorsey vs Manuel Medina. With Medina being floored twice early like Ruelas, and Medina come on strong in the 2nd half of the fight outworked Dorsey 2 to 1 like Ruelas did.

Fight was amazing, a technical brawl doesn’t get much better than that honestly

Jersey Joe Walcott v Rocky Marciano I (heavyweight title) - Rounds scoring basis

I've had this penciled in for awhile. Appeared to be in its entirety with the time allotted, but of course noooooooooooooo! Missing the 5th round. So many times I will abort the fight altogether because I'm so pi**ed off, but for its place in history, I wanted to see it to its end rather than just the highlights we've seen over the years. Here we go.

Round 1: Walcott (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: Walcott
    Round 3: Marciano
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: ???
    Round 6: Marciano
    Round 7: Walcott
    Round 8: Walcott
    Round 9: Marciano
    Round 10: Marciano
    Round 11: Walcott
    Round 12: Walcott
    Round 13: Marciano KOs Walcott

Total through 12 completed rounds - minus the 5th round: 6-4-1 Walcott (actual scores: 7-4, 8-4 and 7-5 all for Walcott)

The 5th round notwithstanding, I enjoyed the slugger v the counterpuncher. A good, hard match where both had their moments and they both exhibited the wounds to prove it. Walcott's left eye was cut up bad and both of Rocky's eyes were in bad shape. Man, it was like, who was going to land first. When Walcott had the center of the ring he was brilliant at moving just slightly out of Rocky's range causing him to reset, while Joe whistled that jab on him. But Rocky was deadly when he had his man against the ropes, which ultimately ended it.

Yoko Gushiken v Tito Abella (Jr. flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 YG (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 YG
    Round 3: 10-8 YG (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 YG
    Round 5: 10-8 YG (scores a knockdown)
    Round 6: 10-9 YG
Round 7: Gushiken drops Abella for the 10 count

Total through 6 completed rounds: 60-51 Gushiken (actual scores: 60-52, 60-52 and 60-54 all for Gushiken)

Only because I love watching Gushiken in action I settled on this fight. Quite one-sided according to all our scorecards, however, I will say when he wasn't tasting resin, Abella was fighting back gamely, although only in explosive spurts. I laughed when I saw the scores. Who'd have thought I would have it wider than the 3 Japanese officials? But great seeing Gushiken in action.

Nana Yaw Konadu v Sung Kil Moon I (super flyweight title)

Round 1: 10-8 Moon (Moon scores 2 knockdowns and Konadu scores one of his own)
    Round 2: 10-9 Moon
    Round 3: 10-8 Moon (scores a knockdown)
Round 4: 10-9 Konadu (scores a knockdown but Moon carries a lot of the freight that round so 10-9 only)
    Round 5: 10-9 Konadu
    Round 6: 10-9 Moon
    Round 7: 10-9 Konadu
    Round 8: 10-9 Konadu
    Round 9: 10-9 Moon

Shades of Napoles-Muniz I. Moon had been cut on the left eye early and was cut on the right eye by the 6th round. But after 9 rounds they decide because there were butts involved and Moon cannot continue, that it should go to the scorecards. The thing is, it was Moon's rampaging style that caused his own cuts. South Korea was not going to let Konadu get out of the country with that title.

Total: 86-83 for Moon after 9 completed rounds (actual scores: 87-84, 86-82 and 86-84 all for Moon.

A bad way to end a terrific fight. I felt Konadu was going to finish Moon, but it was taken out of his hands.

Sung Kil Moon v Nana Yaw Konadu II (super flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Konadu
    Round 2: 10-8 Moon (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-8 Moon (battering)
    Round 4: Moon stops Konadu

Total: I scored it exactly the same as all 3 judges - 29-26 Moon

The rematch really started out well for Konadu but the strength and clubbing punches of Moon took over in the 2nd and he was not to be denied. Moon's will and Konadu's ridiculous strategy of staying in that corner in the 3rd and 4th rounds was the ultimate end.

Ken Norton vs Muhammad Ali 1

    1 Ali
    2 Norton
    3 Ali
    4 Norton
    5 Norton
    6 Norton
    7 Norton
    8 Ali
    9 Norton
    10 Norton
    11 Ali
    12 Norton

    116-112 Norton

This fight was alot more one sided than i remember, i only see Ali win 3 decisive rounds. And in the last round Norton really put a hurting on Ali, and Norton may of stopped him had it been 15 rounds.

Ken Norton vs Muhammad Ali 2

    1 Ali
    2 Ali
    3 Ali
    4 Ali
    5 Norton
    6 Ali
    7 Norton
    8 Norton
    9 Ali
    10 Norton
    11 Norton
    12 Ali

    115-113 Ali

Ali looked alot better in this fight fitter, faster, and being able to use his famous footwork for 12 rounds. Aswell as hurting and staggering Norton a few times, something he didn't do at all in the first meeting.

Ali just won too many of the early rounds with his footwork and jab, and he closed the show with a good 12th round. I don't see any controversy here, it was a good competitive fight but a fight Ali closely but clearly won.

I could see an argument for Norton maybe earning a draw, but anymore than that would be reaching in my opinion.

    Carl Thompson TKO10 Chris Eubank

Similar to their first fight, inasmuch as it illustrated that Eubank, for all his skill and grit, just wasn't a cruiserweight.

Again, he starts off well here, scoring early with a nifty jab-right cross-right uppercut many times over, while Thompson seems to have forgotten the secret ingredient that helped him turn the first fight around, his jab. As a result, I have Eubank doing well on the cards at the midpoint, but it went downhill fast from there, as the champion's strength began to take center stage and once Thompson remembered his jab he just started stemrolling the challenger.

As in the first fight, Eubank's left eye begins to swell, this time starting in the sixth. It's a worse injury than the first time around though, and Thompson targets it with several bludgeoning rights, closing it further. Thompson sweeps rounds six through nine, and Eubank is not allowed to continue when the bell for the tenth rings.

    1. Eubank
    2. Eubank
    3. Eubank
    4. Even
    5. Eubank
    6. Thompson
    7. Thompson
    8. Thompson
    9. Thompson
(Bout is stopped before start of the tenth)

86-86 at the time of the stoppage.

D, for what it's worth, here is my scores on the trilogy.

    Ali-Norton I - California scoring

    Round 1: Ali
    Round 2: Norton
    Round 3: Ali
    Round 4: Norton
    Round 5: Norton
    Round 6: Norton
    Round 7: Ali
    Round 8: Ali
    Round 9: Norton
    Round 10: Norton
    Round 11: Ali
    Round 12: Norton

Total: 7-5 Norton (In rounds and on points)

There was always the usual dispute of what the round the jaw-break took place. The Ali corner said it was the first round. The Norton corner said it was the 12th. But it was interesting to hear Cosell say in the 8th that there was something wrong with Ali's mouth and surmised it might be a broken tooth. Didn't remember that from the original telecast, so it could have taken place anywhere around mid-fight.

Ali v Norton II - California scoring

California scoring of one point for a round, 2 if there is a knockdown and no points for an even round.

    Round 1: Ali
    Round 2: Ali
    Round 3: Ali
    Round 4: Ali
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Ali
    Round 7: Norton
    Round 8: Norton
    Round 9: Ali
    Round 10: Even
    Round 11: Norton
    Round 12: Ali

7-3-2 in rounds but 7-3 on California point system for Ali.

Ali v Norton III - NY rounds basis

Ali-Norton fight in Yankee Stadium. Scoring on the NY rounds basis.

    Round 1: Ali
    Round 2: Norton
    Round 3: Ali
    Round 4: Norton
    Round 5: Norton
    Round 6: Norton
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Norton
    Round 9: Ali
    Round 10: Ali
    Round 11: Ali
    Round 12: Norton
    Round 13: Ali
    Round 14: Norton
    Round 15: Ali

    Total: 7-7-1 Draw

I feel vindicated by seeing your score for the third fight. I too scored it a draw, much to the chagrin of many posting in a thread about the fight a few years back. Norton looked far better overall, but you're not supposed to score a bout based on criteria like that. He frittered it away by trying to clown and mock Ali and took crucial rounds off for some inexplicable reason.

    George Foreman v Shannon Briggs

    Round 1: 10-9 Briggs
    Round 2: 10-9 Foreman
    Round 3: 10-9 Foreman
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Briggs
    Round 6: 10-9 Briggs
    Round 7: 10-9 Briggs
    Round 8: 10-9 Foreman
    Round 9: 10-9 Foreman
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Foreman
    Round 12: 10-9 Foreman

Total: 116-114 Foreman (actual scores: 114-114 even, 117-113 and 116-112 both for Briggs on a majority decision)

Clearly, I had Foreman the winner, but perhaps not in the vein of the wild robbery I have seen discussed here. I had George pulling it out over the last 2 rounds. His last fight and you hate to see anyone go out on a decision that could have and should have, IMO, gone to him.

Two of the three judges had the third fight for Ali so he must have been doing something right in their eyes and the fact that you both had it a draw makes me think there is something in that. I’d have to watch it again to see if I can see a better case for Ali myself. When I watched it before I had it as a clear Norton win.

The first I had 7-4-1 to Norton and the second was the closest of the three fights in my opinion. I actually had Norton by a point (6-5-1 in rounds). So I scored all three for Norton but am aware that scoring the second for Norton is very debatable.
