    James Toney vs Michael Nunn

    1 Toney
    2 Nunn
    3 Nunn
    4 Nunn
    5 Nunn
    6 Toney
    7 Nunn
    8 Toney
    9 Toney
    10 Toney
    11 Toney wins by TKO

    95-95 even

So @Showstopper97 wanted me to do a scorecard for Nunn vs Toney and here it is. I've always thought this was a very overrated fight regarding how dominant Nunn was. Despite Toney losing quite alot of the rounds in the 1st half of the fight, for me he was always competitive in the fight. Nunn would overwhelm Toney at times with his speed and activity, and Nunn's defence also gave Toney a few problems. But at no point in the fight was Toney in trouble.

The fight turned around in the 8th round, as Toney was starting to land the right hand more effectively rocking Nunn a few times with it. The KO/TKO in the 11th round for me was not surprising, you could see Nunn was starting to fade and Toney was starting to hurt him. A late stoppage for me always looked like it could happen, ok maybe you might not of expected an amazing one punch from Toney to basically KO Nunn, but as i said earlier for me a late stoppage always looked like a possibility.

Overall this was a very enjoyable fight with alot of great skills on display from both men, i felt like Nunn did stay on the inside a bit too long with Toney at times, allowing him too many free shots. But it was a very good display from Nunn in speed and combinations for the first 7 rounds or so, but Toney's extra toughness and harder punches down the stretch were the difference.

    Antonio Esparragoza D12 Marcos Villasana

Excellent fight, first off; I love Villasana bouts. He has perhaps history's greatest chin, but he also has a great body attack and throws a lot of shots. He's great value. Esparragoza for his part is the mire polished, with Excellent boxing skills, fluid movement, and good power. He's underrated these days and while he's similar in many ways to Miguel Lora, I think he brings more to the table and was better.

I have no problem with the draw, I really don't. I had Esparragoza a slight winner but could score it differently next time, it was that kind of fight.

    1. Villasana
    2. Esparragoza
    3. Esparragoza
    4. Even
    5. Esparragoza (10-8, for dubious point deduction from Villasana for low blows. Undeserved).
    6. Esparragoza
    7. Villasana
    8. Esparragoza
    9. Villasana
    10. Villasana
    11. Villasana
    12. Esparragoza

115-113 Esparragoza. He finished on fumes, but in my view took the vital 12th round. Excellent fight, and not easy to score.

Thanks for this one…it was a fight I missed back then but I heard a lot about since it was widely reported how dominant Nunn was before he was stopped. I think a couple of the judges had Nunn so far ahead, that Toney just HAD to KO Nunn to win.
Interesting to see your take on it though…I’ll definitely watch this in the next few days.

    LENNOX LEWIS vs RAY MERCER

I was a fan of Lewis and supported him in every fight he had in his career…except against my favourite Heavyweight Mike Tyson. I cheered him on against Mercer too and I remember thing that Lewis just about did enough but it was mighty close, after watching it.
So I revisited it, and here’s how I scored it as a sensible, impartial onlooker nowadays:

    Round 1: Mercer
    Round 2: Mercer
    Round 3: Lewis
    Round 4: Lewis
    Round 5: Mercer
    Round 6: Lewis
    Round 7: Lewis
    Round 8:Lewis
    Round 9: Mercer
    Round 10: Mercer

    Lewis 5 Mercer 5

This fight was much as I remember it. Many of the rounds were so close and the fight went to and fro. Lewis’s jab is one of the best but Mercer more than matched it. Both fighters threw some bombs, but both stood up to them very well…those that say Lewis has a suspect jaw (I was one of them I seem to recall) should watch this. And as for Mercer, thank goodness he’s got a good chin, because he took some fearsome shots himself.

Not quite lbeabuchi/Tua in terms of the number of power shots thrown throughout the fight, but close! It was a battle and a half and both fighters deserve credit.
I really enjoyed that, great fight!

    Nice. This is my scorecard:

    Rounds Won
    Nunn - 1,2,4,5,6,7
    Toney - 3,8,9,10

    My Scorecard
    (N)96-94(T)
    Winner: Toney via TKO 11

    My Review
Nunn started fast - taking the fight to Toney with punches from all angles & dazzling footwork. Toney was somewhat overwhelmed by the speed & activity of Nunn in the early rounds, but was always in the fight, managing to land some of his own signature punches. After 7 rounds, I only gave Toney a round (The 3rd). However, after the 7th, Nunn would begin to slow down as a result of the bodywork from Toney.

Toney had now caught up to Nunn, & was catching, a now stationary Nunn much more often. He sweeped rounds 8,9, & 10, going on to score a HUGE KD with a BIG LEFT HOOK out of nowhere in the 11th (I don't know how Nunn got up from that). He then proceeded to put Nunn down a 2nd time after knocking him into the ropes. The referee finally waved off the bout, having seen enough, & now the unknown challenger Toney (at the time) was the new IBF MW Champion of the World.

Michael Nunn was not schooling Toney, like many claim he was. The was very competitive & could either have been scored a draw, or Nunn ahead by 1 or 2 points. I had Nunn ahead by 2 points at the time of the stoppage.

I mean the judges had it wider than I did, and the general perception at the time was that Toney scored a lucky KO. But in more recent times that myth has been proved false IMO, and when fans have gone back and rewatched this fight. They find out this was actually a competitive fight, with Toney coming on strong in the last 3 rounds and the KO was anything but a fluke.

Personally I don't think Nunn was anymore ahead than 6-4 I think 7-3 is a stretch. I thought Toney did enough to steal 1 or 2 rounds early on, based on him landing the harder punches.

That's reasonable scorecard and a good take on the fight, I thought rounds 1, 3, 6, were competitive rounds that could of been scored to Toney IMO.

D, it's amazing that I ahve never seen this fight. I always heard it was dull but penciled it in cuz I wanted to see it for its historical value. Anyways, here we go:

Jimmy Ellis v Jerry Quarry (vacant WBA heavyweight title) California scoring in effect

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Ellis
    Round 3: Ellis
    Round 4: Ellis
    Round 5: Quarry
    Round 6: Quarry
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Even
    Round 9: Ellis
    Round 10: Ellis
    Round 11: Quarry
    Round 12: Quarry
    Round 13: Quarry
    Round 14: Ellis
    Round 15: Quarry

Total: 6-6 Draw (actual scores: 6-6 Draw, 10-5 and 7-6 Ellis for a majority decision for Ellis)

Our scores are quite amazing actually. Aside from my Even rounds in rounds 1, 7 & 8, which you gave to Ellis, we were exact. This was a dull fight. Ellis would not follow Quarry to the ropes, which drew it to center ring, putting the counter-punching Quarry now as the aggressor. But I think Ellis did himself a disservice there as his lightning-quick right hand always seemed to find Jerry. I would have told him nail him and then get out, but he just drew it back to center ring without doing anything. Also, the rounds Jerry was picking up was as the aggressor, he actually didn't do badly at. I always doubted a bit of the broken back theory until doing some research, which did mete out the fact there were broken bones discovered and he was in a body-cast after this fight for some time. He didn't look as mobile as I have seen him in other fights, so this was a contributor to the events that didn't unfold. Again, not a great fight but I still enjoy seeing some of these old historical bouts.

    Jorge Paez vs Steve Cruz

    1 Paez
    2 Cruz 10-8 knockdown
    3 Cruz
    4 Paez
    5 Paez
    6 Paez
    7 Paez
    8 Paez
    9 Paez
    10 Paez
    11 2 point deductions 1 for Cruz 1 for Paez 9-8 Cruz ?
    12 Paez

    115-110 Paez

Before i start @scartissue @Saintpat @Jel in the 11th round there was 1 point taken away from each fighter, i thought Cruz won the won so i scored it 9-8 Cruz was that correct way to score it guys ?

Ok now that's out of the way the first 3 rounds i thought were entertaining, Paez doing what he does being the aggressor and Cruz was the counter puncher, in the 2nd round Cruz dropped Paez for the first time in his career with a peach of a right hand. I think that right hand may of knocked out quite a few fighters, but fairplay to Paez for taking it and recovering.

I thought Cruz did well in the first 3 rounds with his counter punching, but after that Paez forced him into a bit of a shell with his rough tactics and aggressive style. The fight pretty much followed the same pattern throughout after that, with Paez using a few illegal tactics with the elbow, shoulder, headbutt, and a few legal ones with the uppercuts, right hands, to control the fight.

The 11th round Paez finally got a point taken away which i thought was fair, the referee had warned him throughout the fight and Paez can have no complaints. At the end of the 11th round the referee took another point away which i thought was for Paez again, then i was informed by the commentators that it was Cruz, which left me scratching my head because i didn't see that Cruz had done anything.

Overall not the best Paez fight and that's no fault of his own, Cruz went into a bit of a shell after the 3rd round. But i guess it was a decent to watch, but as we all know Paez has been in great fights but this one was kind of forgettable.

You might try to find Cruz-Tracy Harris Patterson. Good, tightly-contested fight.

The way a round with a point deduction is supposed to be scored is by scoring the rounds as a normal 10-9/10-10/10-8 whatever, then you deduct the points from the total at the end. So it'd just be 10-9 Cruz then you take a point off both guys.
