I haven’t seen the Salido-Martinez rematch. Is the full fight available somewhere? I only seem able to find highlights.

I've never found it, it's why I've not seen it.

Bizarre that such a relatively recent fight (that was also a FOTY contender) isn’t easily available.

    Don Jordan W15 Virgil Akins

I tried, and made it through nine rounds of this thing but couldn't finish it; just a terrible match that I have a hunch was "arranged."

I did some reading afterward and saw that both fighters had been linked to the IBC and Blinky Palermo. That, coupled with the tenor of the bout, where the fighters were content to wrestle and slap and only occasionally cuff each other around the body, with Akins looking particularly inpet and inefficient and awkward, well..........I drew my own conclusion, I don't think this one was on the level.

To the point I watched it I had it 8 rounds to 1 in favor of Jordan, the crowd booing a lot of the time.

Seriously, don't waste your time on this one.

That's one of the few fights when you can say one boxer won every single second of every round.

I’ve often said if someone can show me 10 consecutive seconds Roy Jr didn’t win of his Olympic gold medal fight, you can give his opponent all the gold and all the medals. But there isn’t such a stretch.

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 VR
    Round 3: 10-9 Richardson
Round 4: 10-8 Richardson (Rabanales deducted 1 point for a low blow)
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 VR
Round 7: 9-9 Even (Rabanales' round but deducted 1 point for unintentional Head Butt)
    Round 8: 10-9 VR
    Round 9: 10-9 VR
Round 10: 10-9 VR (Best round)
    Round 11: 10-9 VR
    Round 12: 10-9 VR

Total: 116-112 Rabanales (actual scores: 115-113 Rabanales and a 115-111 and 117-112 both for Richardson)

Man, where do I begin? This is one of those fights that can ride that fine line of what impresses you the most. The rapid but lighter shots as opposed to the lesser with more impact. In this instance it was more impact for me. Sal, I loved the way you described Rabanales as a bantamweight Bazooka Limon. Very apt. But despite his inelegance, I felt he pounded out a deserving decision against the fast-boxing Richardson. Just a bit too much defensive taps on the backfoot from Greg for my liking, while the dogged Rabanales chased and pounded anything he could get his mitts on. Again, a real fine line on what impresses you. Sal, thanks for putting it on my radar. Now I need to check out Rabanales' bouts with Joichiro soon.

Good take on it; remarkable I suppose in that it's probably as dissonant as we've been in our scorecards! It really is a "which style do you like" argument. Oddly, I usually like the aggressor but just thought Richardson fought a tidier, cleaner fight and maintained that pace and strength level which was remarkable.

Liking you comment, Sal, not least for its inclusion of the word ‘dissonant’.

Sal, it might even be a case where the Richardson style doesn't gel with me. Here is an old card (about 5 years ago) from Richardson's 10 round bout with Gaby Canizales. some of the things I said then are very relevant to what we've been talking about now. BTW, this fight isn't even up on youtube anymore, which is a shame.

    Gaby Canizales v Greg Richardson

    Round 1: 10-9 Richardson
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Richardson
    Round 4: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 5: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 6: 10-9 Richardson
    Round 7: 10-9 Richardson
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Canizales
    Round 10: 10-9 Canizales

    Total: 96-96 Draw

This is one those fights where you ask yourself, 'what am I looking for in a fight?' If it is the pop-pop-pop then you will like Richardson, who fights a very controlled fight. But then there is Canizales who trudges after him and will land one wicked shot to Greg's three flicks. I felt there was a fine line in several rounds and I am obviously in the minority because official scores were 97-93 (twice) and 96-94. I love nice boxing and Greg did a magnificent job, but I don't think enough heed was given Gaby's power shots. Anyways, I'm not going to argue about this decision because Greg did well to stay on his bike for 10 rounds. I will say this, I remember when this fight was being televised - although I didn't see it at the time - and remember thinking to myself, 'this is absolutely the wrong fighter for Canizales'. So, I don't know what Manny steward was thinking when he agreed to the match.

    Marvin Hagler vs John Mugabi

    1 Mugabi
    2 Mugabi
    3 Hagler
    4 Hagler
    5 Hagler
    6 Hagler
    7 9-9 Hagler point deduction
    8 Hagler
    9 Mugabi
    10 Hagler
    11 Hagler wins by KO

    96-93 Hagler

Mugabi started off well landing the harder punches, and was able to back up Hagler. Mugabi was also able to make Hagler lead at times, and counter with some great right hands and uppercuts.

I felt like the fight turned around when Hagler started to establish his right jab, which made Mugabi a bit hesitant to rush in. As Hagler was mostly able to control Mugabi in middle of the ring with the jab, and able to at times take advantage of Mugabi's wild swings. But despite Hagler controlling Mugabi with the jab, Mugabi still looked dangerous with his one punch power. Especially the 4th round where Mugabi landed a peach of an uppercut.

The 6th was a grueling round and i feel like that round took alot of Mugabi, and from then on Mugabi looked to be getting weaker and weaker. As he was able to only throw one punch at a time and stood off too much, as Hagler controlled him with the jab and occasional hard straight left hands.

To Mugabi's credit i felt like he got a bit of 2nd wind in the 9th round, and he was able to once again put together some hard punches, and have his best round since the 4th round.

Going into the 10th round Mugabi once again started the round well landing hard punches, but i feel like this round was a very pivotal round. Despite Mugabi starting the 10th well Hagler took the play away from him instantly, And Hagler decided to abandon the jab completely and just come forward aggressively punishing Mugabi to the body. I feel like the body shots and the fact Hagler took the play away from Mugabi in this round, after it looked like Mugabi might be coming on a bit. Just took everything out of Mugabi physically and mentally.

After a very punishing 10th round, Mugabi looked to be running on empty in 11th round. And Mugabi went down from a barrage of punches and probably could of got up. But realizing he just couldn't beat Hagler despite how hard he tried, combined with the fact how exhausted Mugabi was. Mugabi decided to take the full 10 count and Hagler wins by KO.

Overall a great fight Hagler mostly had the better of it, but Mugabi looked very dangerous early on. And even if Mugabi looked to be getting weaker in the 2nd half of the fight, he still looked dangerous with his one punch power, but the difference in this fight was Mugabi had no jab, and Hagler was just too tough and wore down the very hard hitting brave Mugabi.
