    Orlando Salido D12 Francisco Vargas

Per recommendation from a couple posters here, I decided to get hip to Orlando Salido. Very good fight!

    1. Vargas
    2. Even
    3. Salido
    4. Salido
    5. Vargas
    6. Vargas
    7. Salido
    8. Salido
    9. Vargas
    10. Salido
    11. Vargas
    12. Salido

    115-114 Salido.

Hard to pick a winner here; both come forward and whip punches with bad intent, though Salido seems to have heavier hands. Vargas' punches are more frequent and he keeps Salido busy trying to navigate the avalanche of leather coming his way each round. Salido fights more in spurts, but his shots carry more steam and he rallies impressively with the crowd behind him.

It's dead even on the cards for me entering the final round, where I thought Salido put an exclamation point on the end of a long sentence. He seemed to hurt Vargas (finally) and ice the thing, but it's one of those where it's so close, and so little to put between the two I couldn't complain about the draw or even a decision for Vargas. Any of those would have been fair.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

    Julian Williams vs Jarrett Hurd

    1 Williams
    2 Williams 10-8 knockdown
    3 Hurd
    4 Williams
    5 Hurd
    6 Hurd
    7 Hurd
    8 Williams
    9 Williams
    10 Williams
    11 Williams
    12 Williams

    116-111 Williams

Bit of an upset this one but a very fun fight with alot of good inside fighting, Williams was just the more skillful of the two on the inside. Better cleaner punches from Williams, constantly backed up the supposed more stronger Hurd, and slipped and changed angles beautifully on the inside.

A very competitive fight and Hurd had his moments, but for me you could clearly see Williams won a majority of the rounds. Definitely recommended fight to watch though.

Azumah Nelson (c) vs. Jeff Fenech II, scheduled for 12 rounds for Nelson’s WBC super featherweight title at Princes Park Football Grounds in Melbourne, Australia, on March 1, 1992.

Fenech was on the wrong end of a bad draw in a fight he seemed to have clearly won nine months before against Nelson in Las Vegas. He lured the Professor to Aussieland for the rematch in front of 40,000 on a wet and rainy day (there was a canopy over the ring but it leaked in spots, playing a small part in how things played out).

    Nelson enters 33-2-1 (25) while Fenech is 26-0-1 (19). Both weigh 126.

1 — Nelson 10-8: Azumah works behind a stiff jab and makes it clear he’s not going to be easily backed up by the aggressive pressure fighter this time. He lands a peach of a right hand for a knockdown.

2 — Nelson 10-8: Here’s where the wet canvas comes into play. Nelson scores another knockdown but … there’s a couple of punches involved but it appears Jeff slipped on a puddle. Either way, Nelson’s round and you have to score with how the ref calls it.

3 — Fenech 10-9: Jeff gets busy, trapping Azumah on the ropes. Nelson’s punches are more effective but Jeff outhustles him to take this one.

4 — Even 10-10: Fought mostly on the outside, Jeff is busy but mostly arm punches while Azumah picks his spots behind the jab to land the harder blows.

5 — Nelson 10-9: The jab is predominant here but he also gets home with some thudding shots.

6 — Nelson 10-9: Back to the ropes but while Fenech is busy, Azumah unloads some heavy artillery to rattle Jeff late.

7 — Fenech 10-9: Again Fenech is busier, but again it’s mostly arm punches.

8 — Nelson by TKO at 2:20. He fights off the ropes again and lands a zinger of a left hook and then two more and a right to put Fenech down. He gets up but takes a couple more shots and is out of it when the corner throws in the towel and referee Arthur Mercante stops it.

My card: 68-64 Nelson. Official cards: 66-66 x2 and 68-65 for Nelson.

Azumah had malaria in the first fight but comes back strong to make an emphatic statement.

Juan Manuel Lopez v Rafael Marquez (featherweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 3: 10-9 Lopez
Round 4: 10-8 Marquez (Marquez' round and Lopez is deducted a point for 'pushing down the head/rabbit punching')
    Round 5: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 6: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 7: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 8: 10-9 Lopez
Marquez' corner retires him between rounds 8 and 9

Total through 8 completed rounds: 78-74 Lopez (actual scores: 78-73, 77-73 and 77-74 all for Lopez)

This was a decent fight but it was still a 35 year old Marquez against the streaking undefeated Lopez. Lopez' chin liabilities were already suspected as Al Bernstein noted and Marquez did occasionally rattle Lopez with a counter. However, it was Lopez getting off more and inflicting considerable punishment the last couple of rounds. Marquez fought back enough that I never considered a 10-8 round, but the hand writing was on the wall. At the beginning of the 9th Marquez was claiming a shoulder injury, but that was a face-saver. There was nothing wrong with him at the end of the 8th and no complaints other than the fact he was now taking a bit of a pounding.

D, holy crap! What a fight! I had the exact same score as you (the announcing table scored that 2nd round incorrectly. You don't deduct a point from the winner of a round unless it is a point deduction. You elevate the other man's score due to his knockdown. A 10-8 is correct, not 9-7 as they scored it). Not knowing anything about this, I half expected a Szymanski win. He threw nice body shots, a nice jab and a really nice straight right hand. Talarek seemed to take over because Szymanski didn't seem to take it to the body well and it exhausted him. But what a great find for simply a good, fun, club fight. Thanks, D.

Talarek is a legend in his own right, working full time in a coal mine, usually night shifts - and still finding time and energy to train - and always coming with effort like this. He was already a bit worn down at the time of this fight, but only physically - Szymanski had all advantages outside of heart and mental fortitude.

I saw Lopez vs Rafa the other day. I think I found one more round for Marquez - but Lopez bullied him. Made me think what a shame it was We didn't see Lopez vs Gamboa. I think everyone remembers Bob and his genius "let's marinate it for couple more years" plan. Thanks Bob.

Kevin Kelley v Derrick Gainer I (featherweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Gainer
    Round 2: 10-9 Gainer
Round 3: 10-9 Kelley (Kelley scores a knockdown and so does Gainer but Gainer's is disallowed)
    Round 4: 10-8 Gainer (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-8 Kelley (scores a knockdown)
    Round 6: 10-9 Kelley
    Round 7: 10-9 Gainer
    Round 8: Kelley KOs Gainer

Total through 7 completed rounds: 66-65 Gainer (actual scores not known)

This was a fun fight! The way Gainer was ripping Kelley from the center of the ring, it was his to lose and he did so from a one-punch bomb by Kelley. Not remembering the result of this fight, I actually thought during the 8th round that Kelley's cornerman Phil Borgia should consider stopping the fight with his one-eyed fighter under heavy bombardment. And then, out of the blue, POW! Regarding my score, I should explain the 3rd round. Gainer was winning the round and then landed a shot on Kelley's jaw as he was slipping to the canvas. The ref Santore's eyes were probably fixated on Gainer going down and the fact that Kelley went down a mili-second after was unnoticed, but he went down hard. I couldn't disregard this and when Kelley scored an official knockdown a few moments later, I only gave him the round by 10-9. Harold Lederman scored the round 10-10, which according to him, he had the latitude to do so. I would have to read the unified rules, but I wouldn't contradict Harold. Anyways, I would definitely recommend this fight to you all. I really never liked Gainer, but he fought well in this bout.

ROY JONES Jr vs JOHN RUIZ

    Round 1: Jones
    Round 2: Jones
    Round 3: Jones
    Round 4: Jones
    Round 5: Jones
    Round 6: Jones
    Round 7: Jones
    Round 8: Even
    Round 9: Ruiz
    Round 10: Jones
    Round 11: Jones
    Round 12: Jones

    JONES 10 RUIZ 1 EVEN 1

Good grief! I didn’t watch this fight at the time, but I’d seen highlights, heard the judges scores and read the reports. This fight was a lot more one sided than I’d been led to believe, and far from Ruiz chasing a running Jones throughout the fight, it wasn’t like that at all. Both fighters stood in the centre for long spells, with not a large volume of punches thrown by either fighter. Both watched and waited for long spells…the ponderous Ruiz seemed reluctant to launch all out attacks, probably afraid of being brutally countered. Nevertheless he did try and attack more often than not but not very effectively for the most part. Ruiz did throw a couple of good shots early on, but not only did Jones take them, he responded with his own good shots and took all the early rounds.

As for Jones, he countered beautifully whenever Ruiz tried to go forward, but far from being only defensive, Jones actually launched a good few attacks of his own at times, using his JAB…yes his jab…to good effect before throwing combos to Ruiz body and head, and then retreating as Ruiz corner shouted in frustration as their man was being thoroughly outclassed.

There was a brief upturn from Ruiz in rounds 8 and 9, but any hopes that the bigger man was about to seize the initiative and either stop or KO Jones was swiftly extinguished as Jones closed out the last 3 rounds with relative ease.

Matthew Saad Muhammad vs Jerry Martin

    1 Martin
    2 Martin
    3 Muhammad
    4 Martin
    5 Muhammad
    6 Martin
    7 Martin
    8 Muhammad
    9 Muhammad
    10 Muhammad
    11 Muhammad wins by TKO

    95-95 Even

So this fight was kind of the Light Heavyweight version of the rumble in the jungle, Muhammad laid on the ropes and let Martin punch himself out. Despite all the pressure from Martin i don't think Muhammad ever looked troubled, and looked quite calm despite losing the early rounds.

Muhammad started to up the pace after the 7th round, as Martin started to sag and looked tried. The difference to me in this fight is whenever Muhammad opened up, his punches looked so much more effective.

The 10th round was the best round of the fight, as Martin for the first time actually stunned Muhammad with a right hand. and there was some good back and forth action. But Muhammad as he normally does quickly recovered, and had Martin backing up in the final seconds of the round.

I thought the stoppage was a bit sudden no doubt Martin was out on his feet, and would of been stopped regardless. But i would of liked to have maybe have seen a bit more action before the stoppage, but again maybe the referee see something in Martin's eyes. Overall i'm not going to judge the referee too harshly, as Martin was definitely out on his feet.

Overall it was a decent fight i wouldn't say it was one of Muhammad's most memorable fights, but he did his job and the rope a dope wore down the physically strong Jerry Martin.

Alright, I had to watch it

    Syzmanski vs Talarek
    Syzmanski 10-7
    Syzmanski 10-8
    Talarek 10-7
    Talarek 10-7
    Talarek KO

    1) wow what a brawl!!!!
    2) the promoter should have immediately given out bonuses and signed these guys to a main event rematch
    3) more refs should watch this polish ref, if this was officiated by some others it would of been over in round 1, but this ref recognized boxing aiht ballet and let it go until he thought Syzmanski had enough

D, scored this a bit ago. Here is how I saw it. We weren't off by much.

Matthew Saad Muhammad v Jerry 'The Bull' Martin

    Round 1: 10-9 Martin
    Round 2: 10-9 Martin
    Round 3: 10-9 Saad
    Round 4: 10-9 Martin
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Saad
    Round 7: 10-9 Martin
    Round 8: 10-9 Saad
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Saad
    Round 11: Saad stops Martin

Total through 10 rounds: 96-96 (actual scores 95-95, 96-94 Saad and 97-93 for Saad)

Good brawl. I'm still inclined to say the stoppage was a bit early. Another punch or two would probably convince me because there was a lot of time left and Saad was an excellent finisher. But it is what it is.

Kevin Kelley v Derrick Gainer II (10 rounds)

I felt obligated to check out their rematch after such a great fight first time around, so let me save everyone a bit of time. Don't bother. After getting caught first time around, Gainer was taking no chances and fought a measured, safety-first kind of fight this time. Every so often he would let a few combos rip, but it was always at a safe distance and Kelley offered nothing in return. No sense running a card here. I only gave Kelley a share of the 3rd and Gainer scored a knockdown in rounds 1 and 7 for a 100-89 score on my card. Officials had it way closer at 96-94, 96-93 and 96-92 for Gainer. Harold Lederman saw it closer to my card at 99-89. Again, give this a wide berth.

I've never seen the 2nd fight because I heard it was boring, and your analysis seems to some up what I've heard about it.

Crazy to think such an amazing 1st fight, could have such a dull rematch. But I guess it has happened in the past Frazier/Ali 2, MAB/Morales 2.

I remember watching it live and also being disappointed, this was soon after another Kelly war when he lost to Hamed in a very entertaining fight
