    Eder Jofre W15 Jose Legra

It's odd, but I never read much about this fight. It's significant, because Jofre won a title at a very advanced age against a younger, faster champion at the new, higher weight. It's a remarkable achievement. The thing is, I had Legra winning it. And I have never read of anyone questioning the decision.

It's an interesting, if not great fight. Legra is faster, and apparently an idolator of Ali, dancing with his arms at his side, doing fancy little shuffles back and forth, and flashing fast hands. Jofre was the clear aggressor, stalking and landing occasional jabs and long rights, and trying to pound the body as much as he could.

I felt Jofre came on a bit late, but to me what edged it for Legra was what I thought was a clear knockdown at the end of the third round. Jofre was dazed, staggered after a hard right, then went to his knees right at the bell. I couldn't tell if the referee counted it though, it was like he waved it off as he sent the fighters back to their corners. Odd. I counted that round 10-8 for Legra, and it meant the difference on my card.

    1. Legra
    2. Even
    3. Legra (10-8)
    4. Jofre
    5. Jofre (even rounds for me, but ref deducts point from Legra for low blow)
    6. Jofre
    7. Legra
    8. Legra
    9. Jofre
    10. Legra
    11. Legra
    12. Jofre
    13. Jofre
    14. Legra
    15 Jofre

    143-142 Legra.

Sal, this was my card from sometime back. I believe there was also a point deduction in the 15th.

Jose Legra v Eder Jofre (featherweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Legra
    Round 2: 10-9 Legra
Round 3: 10-8 Legra (Legra scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Jofre
Round 5: 9-9 Even (I felt Legra won the round but he lost a point for holding)
    Round 6: 10-9 Jofre
    Round 7: 10-9 Legra
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Legra
    Round 11: 10-9 Jofre
    Round 12: 10-9 Jofre
    Round 13: 10-9 Jofre
    Round 14: 10-9 Legra
Round 15: 10-8 Jofre (another point deducted from Legra for again what appeared to be holding)

    Total: 142-142 Draw

Oh! Well then we both have it 142-142 then. Wasn't aware of the deduction in the 15th. Two points for holding?? I didn't think Legra's holding was particularly excessive, that seems unfair.

Went on a bit of a Victor Rabanales kick today, watching 2 of his fights. The first was:

Victor Rabanales v Silverio Tan (10 rounds)

First of all, Silverio Tan fought under the name Jun Tan Sato. Although Filipino, he did seem to fight out of Japan, which was perhaps to ingratiate himself to his audience. Tan was unusual. He was tall and really reminded me of a super-bantamweight version of Carlos Palomino. He could take a punch like Palomino too although his record wouldn't suggest it. But man, he took full-blooded shots from Rabanales without flinching. When he went on the attack it would start good but he just didn't have the kind of output that was going to disturb Rabanales. I gave Rabanales the first 6 rounds and the 7th ended the fight oddly. Although Tan went down early in the round, one could see he was off balance when he was caught and rose with no bother. But the KO??? Let me tell ya, I replayed this several times and I just don't see it. Rabanales lands a long right to what appears to be the chest of Tan (which he seemed to partially block) and he goes down in a heap. Sorry guys, ain't buying it!

Victor Rabanales v Wayne McCullough (12 round eliminator)

    Round 1: 10-9 VR
    Round 2: 10-9 VR
    Round 3: 10-9 Wayne
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
Round 5: 9-9 Even (scored it for Rabanales but deducted 1 point for a low blow)
    Round 6: 10-9 Wayne
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Wayne
    Round 9: 10-9 VR
    Round 10: 10-9 VR
    Round 11: 10-9 Wayne
    Round 12: 10-9 Wayne

Total: 115-114 McCullough (actual scores: 115-113, 116-110 and 117-110 all for McCullogh)

To begin, 2 of the scores did Rabanales an injustice. This was a damn close fight and I could see others also having Rabanales the winner. Wayne didn't have Rabanales' thump and the Mexican worked the body well and the scores seemed to ignore this. Tough to score but a good fight.

    Filip Hrgovic vs Zhang Zhilei

    1 Zhang 10-8
    2 Hrgovic
    3 Zhang
    4 Zhang Close
5 Hrgovic Close round Zhang rocked him towards the end of the round
6 Zhang big round for Zhang
7 Hrgovic Both men looking tired
8 Hrgovic Good round for Hrgovic Zhang looking the more tired fighter but Zhang still looks dangerous
9 Zhang comes back well and steals the round hurting Hrgovic loving this fight
10 Hrgovic you really can't tell what's gonna happen next
11 Hrgovic competitive round though, i really don't like the way Hrgovic reacts after getting hit
    12 Hrgovic

    114-113 Hrgovic

I could definitely see an argument for Zhang winning, the 5th round was debatable. But overall wasn't impressed with Hrgovic though, i didn't like how he reacted to getting hit. But it was a fun fight to watch regardless alot of back and forth momentum swings.

Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua 2

    Spoiler alertttttttttttttttttttttttt

    1 Usyk
    2 Joshua
    3 Usyk
    4 Usyk
    5 Usyk
    6 Usyk
    7 Usyk
    8 Joshua
    9 Joshua
    10 Usyk
    11 Usyk
    12 Usyk

    117-111 Usyk

Good fight Joshua competed better and had some success with body shots, but Usyk was just too skillful and slippery once again. And anytime Joshua had any momentum Usyk took it away from him immediately, but overall Usyk shows why he's one of the best P4P fighters once again. And even though Joshua lost i don't think it's the end for him he competed well.

Oscar De La Hoya vs Pernell Whitaker

Never actually bothered to sit down and watch this one properly enough to form a definitive opinion so thought **** it. Lazy sunday and was in the mood to watch some Sweet Pea. One thing that catches the eye before the fight kicks off is Pernells physique, its the best shape looks wise ive ever seen him.

    Round 1: ODLH 9 - 10 PW
    Round 2: ODLH 10 - 9 PW
Round 3: ODLH 10 - 9 PW Scored this one even but Whitaker had a point taken away for a butt
    Round 4: ODLH 10 - 9 PW
    Round 5: ODLH 9 - 10 PW
    Round 6: ODLH 10 - 10 PW
    Round 7: ODLH 9 - 10 PW
    Round 8: ODLH 10 - 10 PW
    Round 9: ODLH 8 - 10 PW
    Round 10: ODLH 10 - 9 PW
    Round 11: ODLH 9 - 10 PW
    Round 12: ODLH 10 - 9 PW

    TOTA:: 114 - 115 Pernell Whitaker
    Judges at Ringside : 115-111, 116 - 110, 116-110 all for ODLH

A lot of close rounds in this one and a bit of a cagey affair overall. Thought Pernells jab and control of the range kept him in there for a lot of it, for me a boxer who knows himself and his limitations well is great to watch and thats Pernell in this one his experience gets him through. Oscar i thought done a really good job of stopping Whitaker getting much success on the inside, felt he maybe gave Whitaker too much respect here and wouldve done well to be a bit rougher and use his size against Whitaker. First half of the fight he seemed content to play the counter-puncher and let P force the issue. Sad how it all went to pot so quickly for Pernell after this one because he still looked sharp and come the championship rounds he was the fitter man in the ring.

    Usyk v Joshua

    Round 1: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 2: 10-9 AJ
    Round 3: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 4: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 5: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 6: 10-9 AJ
    Round 7: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 AJ
    Round 10: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 11: 10-9 Usyk
    Round 12: 10-9 Usyk

Total: 117-112 Usyk (actual scores: 116-112 and 115-113 both for Usyk along with a 115-113 for Joshua for a split win for Usyk)

You and I had it fairly similar, D. The judge with the dissenting vote needs to go back to school and give back the money he stole for being an 'Official,' because he certainly did not know why he was there or why 2 guys were punching each other.

George Chuvalo v Pat McMurtry (NY rounds scoring)

    Round 1: Chuvalo
    Round 2: Chuvalo
    Round 3: McM
    Round 4: McM
    Round 5: McM
    Round 6: McM
    Round 7: McM
    Round 8: McM
    Round 9: McM
    Round 10: McM

Total: 8-2 McMurtry (actual scores: 8-2, 8-1-1 and 7-3 all for McMurtry)

I was glad to see this fight out there. Not that it was a particularly exciting fight, but for its historical significance. Both fighters rising prospects and fighting out of the Garden for their big chance. Chuvalo hurt McMurtry in the 2nd round for the biggest drama in the fight. After that Pat got into a good steady rhythm of jabbing George steadily and when in close, firing short uppercuts that Chuvalo had no defense for. Pat messed up George's nose pretty good in this contest and I know George was out for about a year after this, which will attest to the damage McMurtry must have done. Again, I love finding some of these great old contests out there with no rounds missing.

I scored it identically to you Dp. It looked for a couple of rounds…8 and 9, that maybe, just maybe the tide was turning.
But Usyk is something else, and he just stepped it up another level when Joshua seemed to be getting a foothold back into the fight.

AJ was probably fighting at his best last night, but the frightening thing for this era’s current crop of top heavyweights is that Usyk was capable of better, and he still won fairly easily.

    Round 10: IQ 10 - 8 OC
    Round 11: IQ 8 - 10 OC
    Round 12: IQ 10 - 9 OC

    TOTAL: 116 - 107 Ike Quartey
    Judges: 112-112 ,116 - 109 , 117 - 107 Ike Quartey by MD

Valiant effort from Oba but if Quarteys jab is finding you at will and he doesnt respect your power and youre not strong enough to force him back its going to be a long night. This is Bazookas Cleveland Williams moment at the top level i think, Pernell,Tito and Oscar didnt want to know a thing about this guy in 1996.

Boxeo, I scored this a couple of years back. A good fight, which I had a good bit closer. Anyways, this is what I wrote:

Ike Quartey v Oba Carr (welterweight title)

Good fight, but I had it a bit closer than the commentators. It's a bit all over the place because of point deductions but here it is.

    Round 1: 10-9 Quartey
    Round 2: 10-9 Carr
    Round 3: 10-9 Carr
Round 4: 10-9 Carr (I scored the round even but Mercante deducted a point from Ike For pulling on the neck of Carr - the deduction was a bit harsh)
    Round 5: 10-9 Quartey
    Round 6: 10-9 Quartey
    Round 7: 10-9 Quartey
Round 8: 10-8 Quartey (Mercante deducted a point from Carr for a low blow)
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
Round 10: 9-9 Even (scored it for Carr but Mercante deducted another point from Carr for a low blow)
Round 11: 10-8 Carr (thought Carr won the round but disagreed with the knockdown - but the ref scored it and it has to be counted)
    Round 12: 10-9 Quartey

Total: 114-112 Quartey (actual scores: 112-112, 117-109 and 116-109 for a majority decision for Quartey)

Two judges had it wide for Ike and one had it even. Personally, I loved the speedy combos thrown by Carr. A style of boxing I enjoy, but one can see Ike really exerting his dominance in the middle rounds. A good finish over the last 3 rounds by both fighters made it an enjoyable fight.

Robert Dickie v Kamel Bou Ali (some WBC crap jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Ali
    Round 3: 10-9 Ali
    Round 4: 10-9 Dickie
    Round 5: 10-9 Dickie
Round 6: the fight is stopped by the doctor due to a severe cut over the left eye of Dickie

Total: 48-48 Even at the time of stoppage (scores unknown)

This bout was for some of our posters from across the pond. I had never seen Dickie - only read about him - and wanted to check him out against the hard-punching Ali. Dickie started out boxing well, but it wasn't getting him anywhere with this rough house from Tunisia. He was a rough dude in the mold of a Mustafa Hamsho, especially with the head. Around the end of the 4th it appeared that Dickie said, the hell with it, and went in and engaged. And did much better, although he was no puncher but a very sharp hitter from his beautiful boxing stance. But the damage was done and was only getting worse. The doc pulled him out at the right time of an entertaining fight.

Rocky Lockridge v Julio Llerena (10 round non-title)

This was another abbreviated contest I was interested in seeing. Jr. lightweight champ Rocky Lockridge in a non-title to stay sharp. No point running a card here. Lockridge won every round before he leveled Llerena in the 6th round. I'll give Llerena marks for gameness and really trying to make a fight out of it in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. However, Rocky really started turning on the heat and began pounding Llerena in rounds 4, 5 and finally the 6th when he ended matters. Great seeing Rocky in action again in a fight I never saw previously.
