Doesn’t really show it on the video in terms of any controversy but he did land one punch late.

Pretty sure Lupe had Angelo Dundee in his corner.

And am I misremembering, or did Azumah not land a hard shot after the bell ending the eighth round that shook/wobbled Suarez and he didn’t really recover before the start of the ninth and that’s when he got overrun?

EDIT: I see you already addressed that. I need to look this one up again. But I remember Suarez really boxing well and with confidence.

    Fabrice Tiozzo v Mike McCallum

Very decent scrap between the veteran champ McCallum and a very focussed challenger riding the wave of vociferous hometown support.

McCallum was 38 here and was obviously not as sharp as in his younger years, nor as sharp as in his title win over Jeff Harding. His lack of pop was sometimes a problem as a middleweight but as a light heavyweight, it was appreciably more so. Tiozzo had more on his punches and McCallum couldn’t make much of a dent, even when he landed flush.

The surprise was McCallum getting dropped, albeit from a flash knockdown in the second round. It was a legit KD but he wasn’t hurt. Neither fighter looked in significant trouble at any point after that.

The scoring was on the money and I had no issue - Tiozzo was a deserving winner and McCallum seemed to know it as well.

    1 10-9
2 10-8 (McCallum touches down from a Tiozzo left hook)
    3 9-10 (close)
    4 10-9
5 9-10 (better accuracy coming from McCallum this round)
6 10-9 (close. Good back and forth action.)
    7 9-10
    8 9-10 (close)
    9 10-9
10 10-10 (not much in it)
    11 10-9 (close)
    12 10-9

    Tiozzo 116-112 McCallum

    Vasyl Lomachenko vs Jamaine Ortiz

    1 Ortiz
    2 Lomachenko
    3 Lomachenko
    4 Ortiz
    5 Lomachenko
    6 Lomachenko
    7 Ortiz
    8 Ortiz
    9 Lomachenko
    10 Lomachenko
    11 Lomachenko
    12 Lomachenko

    116-112 Lomachenko

I was impressed with Ortiz's handspeed and jab, but i felt like he wasted a bit too energy early on. And wasn't strong enough in the later rounds which Lomachenko took clearly as Ortiz clearly faded, overall a competitive fight with alot of skills on display. I really enjoyed the technical aspect of the fight but Lomachenko clearly won IMO.

    Pinklon Thomas W12 Tim Witherspoon

I'd seen all other championship efforts from both men but strangely never this one. We didn't have HBO as a teenager and then my antipathy toward heavyweights grew with the years. Eventually it just became one of those fights I never seemed to get around to.

It wasn't a bad fight really, for big men. I'd read voluminously about it in the magazines at the time, and they waxed poetic about Thomas' jab, how it was akin to being kicked in the face by a T-Rex or hit in the nose with an asteroid or some such thing. It was a good jab though, they didn't lie about that. Witherspoon was left lacking for any answer to it, and that's a big deal because it offset his own best weapon, the jab.

The thing about Witherspoon is, if you take away his jab it then becomes a matter of parrying or ducking the outside stuff, because his second-best weapon is a wide but powerful overhand right. His hook is a bit wide as well, so everything is coming from the outside. Thomas would routinely beat him to the punch by jabbing and shooting short little right hands, and have him backing up or bizarrely going southpaw for stretches, presumably because he just didn't know what else to do. Witherspoon would try to load up and miss badly most of the time or try to muscle inside and work the body, at which he had moderate success.

As a side note, I don't think I've ever seen points deducted before for multiple backhanding infractions. That was a novelty of this fight. Thomas dicated the pace of this thing, save a few stretches here and there. He was the deserving winner.

    1. Spoon
    2. Spoon
    3. Thomas
    4. Thomas
    5. Thomas (10-8, with point deduction from 'Spoon for backhanding)
    6. Thomas
    7. Thomas
    8. Spoon
    9. Spoon
    10. Even
    11. Thomas
    12. Thomas

    116-112 Thomas.

Pretty much how I saw it. Had it 117-112 because I had one even round. Good effort by Ortiz. Maybe if they fought again in 2 or 3 years it's a different story but Loma still had enough in the tank.

Floyd Mayweather vs Luis Castillo 1

    Round 1: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 2: 10-9 Mayweather. Close
    Round 3: 10-9 Mayweather.Close
Round 4: 10-9 Mayweather. He's just landing more.
    Round 5: 10-9 Castillo
    Round 6: 10-9 Castillo
    Round 7: 10-9 Castillo
Round 8: 10-8 Mayweather. Castillo loses a point for hitting on break. I thought he wasn't active enough to win the round before that.
    Round 9: 10-9 Castillo
Round 10: 10-8 Castillo. Mayweather loses point for pushing. Castillo beating Mayweather up.
    Round 11: 10-9 Castillo. Close
    Round 12: 10-9 Castillo. Close.

    My Score: 114-112 Castillo

Official Scores: 116-111 and 115-111 x2 all for Mayweather UD.

Ok I kinda get why people are always whining about this fight on here. I think a lot of people probably have Catillo the 8th round, too, like Harold Lederman did. I thought Castillo didn't throw enough punches that round, but otherwise think he was in charge the whole 2nd half of the fight.

Champion Fidel Bassa - Challenger Dave McAuley 1
    WBA Flyweight Championship 4-25-1987

    Round 1 - 10-8 Bassa
    Round 2 - 10-9 Bassa
    Round 3 - 10-8 McAuley
    Round 4 - 10-9 Bassa Close
    Round 5 - 10-9 McAuley
    Round 6 - 10-8 McAuley
Round 7 - 10-9 Bassa - Also 1 point subtracted from Bassa for head foul.
    Round 8 - 10-9 Bassa
    Round 9 - 10-7 McAuley
    Round 10 - 10-9 McAuley
    Round 11 - 10-10 Even
    Round 12 - 10-9 Bassa
Round 13 - McAuley Knocked out by Bassa

My score 113-111 McAuley - Actual Scores 115-112 and 114-112 twice, all for McAuley

What a crazy fight. There was a 3rd round knockdown that makes Ali's Phantom Punch look like Marciano's face-contorting shot against Walcott. There was an obvious sixth round knockdown that the ref decided was a slip. There was fouling, there was blood and lastly, there was a definitive ending.

Victor Cordoba v Michael Nunn (super middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Cordoba
    Round 2: 10-9 Cordoba
    Round 3: 10-9 Cordoba
    Round 4: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 5: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 6: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 7: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 8: 10-9 Cordoba
Round 9: 10-9 Nunn (scored the round Even but 1 point deducted from Cordoba for a low blow)
    Round 10: 10-8 Cordoba (scores a knockdown)
    Round 11: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 12: 10-9 Nunn

Total: 114-113 Nunn (actual scores: 114-113 and 114-112 for Nunn. With a 114-112 for Cordoba, Nunn wins a split decision)

Nunn was elated to win the decision and title, but I remember watching this live at the time and would have felt anything but elation. This was Nunn getting into the twilight of his career. Because he took way too many punches in this fight. Man, Cordoba couldn't miss with anything. A very close fight.

Wow, Sal, we had it eerily almost the same. Which is saying something because a lot of these rounds were close. You're right, an interesting fight.

Fogger, I saw this fight for the first time just a few months back. We were clearly watching the same fight. Here is what I wrote:

Fidel Bassa v Dave McAuley (flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 Bassa (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Bassa
    Round 3: 10-8 McAuley (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 McAuley
Round 7: 9-9 Even (Bassa's round but he loses a point for use of the head)
    Round 8: 10-9 Bassa
    Round 9: 10-7 McAuley (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-9 Bassa
Round 13: Bassa drops and stops McAuley

Total through 12 completed rounds: 114-112 McAuley (actual scores: 114-112, 114-112 and 115-112 all for McAuley)

I remember when this fight took place, read about it in Boxing News and I'm finally getting around to seeing it. Better late than never. An outstanding contest, one which both combatants should be proud of. A real war of attrition, but in the end, Bassa had a bit more. Again, great contest.
