    Gilberto Roman KO5 Yoshiyuki Uchida

I love Roman. The guy was such a little badass. A slick boxing, well-trained, throwback, old-school badass. He is so adept at gauging opportunity and decelerating or accelerating where necessary so smoothly and intrinsically. He boxes like a dream and has a touch of malice in him I think. He's great to watch.

Uchida, for his part, seems confused about his role. He skips around the ring rather pointlessly for three rounds, seemingly unsure how to proceed. He throws literally almost no punches in the first three rounds, instead skipping back and forth and giving the impression he might actually burst from his shell and throw a punch. Literally at any time! Roman thus wins the first three largely thanks to the challenger's highly-developed sense of inertia.

In the fourth, Uchida shoots out a hard jab and shockingly Roman falls on his back. At first I thought he'd only slipped, but the champion looked up forlornly at the referee as if to say "can you believe this ****? A ****ing jab? Finish your damn eight-count, this is embarrassing."

Roman decides this day has gone badly enough to end early. He steps forward for the remainder of the fourth and punishes the once-euphoric challenger, reminding him of the natural order of things.

Very early in the fifth, Roman floors Uchida with what appears to be the same "shotgun jab" that Uchida dumped HIM with just a round before. Uchida rises, his nose a splayed, bloody mess. He is wobbly, and Roman sets upon him, throwing a brief flurry capped off with an unspeakably gorgeous left hook with the coolest walk-away I've seen in a while. Roman knows it's over, and is appropriately pleased but still understated, which I like.

    1. Roman
    2. Roman
    3. Roman
    4. Uchida, 10-8
    5. Roman KO's Uchida with the left hook from Hades

38-37 Roman at the time of the obliteration.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs Marcos Maidana 1

Round 1: 10-9 Maidana. Close. Lotta ineffective punches by Maidana but still gave it to him on aggression and a few big shots.
Round 2: 10-9 Maidana. Sloppy which is Maidana's fight.
    Round 3: 10-9 Maidana. Close.
    Round 4: 10-9 Maidana. Close.
    Round 5: 10-9 Maidana
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 8: 10-9 Mayweather. Close.
Round 9: 10-9 Mayweather. Maidana seems gassed.
Round 10: 10-9 Mayweather. Close because he was pretty inactive but classic Mayweather negative round.
    Round 11:10-9 Mayweather
    Round 12: 10-9 Mayweather

    115-114 Mayweather

    Official Scores: 115-112, 116-111 x2 for Mayweather.

Scores a little wide but I think the right man won this one. Maidana came on strong but Mayweather took over in the 2nd half. If it was a 15 rounder I think Mayweather wins without controversy. Of course I can't argue with a draw or a close win for Maidana either.

Azumah Nelson v Lupe Suarez (jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 3: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 4: 10-9 Nelson
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 7: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 8: 10-9 Nelson
Round 9: Nelson drops and stops Suarez

Total through 8 completed rounds: 78-76 Suarez (actual scores: 76-76, and 2 scores of 77-76, both for Nelson)

What a terrific fight. Thanks all for putting this on the radar. I really loved Lupe Suarez' kind of boxing. Fast, hard combos that never let up. The two of them displayed such good, clean punching that it was just the kind of fight I love. Regarding that late blow in the 8th that Nelson landed, I reviewed 3 different films on this same fight and due to the fact they cut away so quickly at the end of a round, that it makes it almost impossible to say what kind of shape Suarez was in at the end of the round. Regardless, great fight.

    Jorge Paez v Lupe Suarez

    Round 1: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 2: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 3: 10-9 Suarez
    Round 4: 10-8 Paez (scores a knockdown)
The fight is stopped between rounds due to a cut caused from an accidental butt from Paez on Suarez - the bout is ruled a tech. draw

Total through 4 completed rounds: 38-37 Suarez

After watching Suarez against Azumah Nelson I wanted to see a little more of him and found this fight out there. It was a terrific little contest, although brief. They fought a close, hard-banging type of fight which I was loving with clean shots abounding. And then a cessation of hostilities due to New Jersey's 'before the 5th round' rule. What a bummer. I was totally enjoying this. Have no idea how the judges had it but the announcers and I were completely different. So this would be down to your judgement on who was controlling the bout. I will say though, that Paez decked Suarez with a beauty of a left hook to the liver and the tide appeared to be turning.

So this was on the Holyfield-Foreman undercard which means I’m sure I saw it if it was part of the PPV (which I gather it was) but I have zero memory of even knowing it happened.

Sounds like one I would enjoy, ending aside. I really liked Lupe — I was in AC for Tyson-Spinks and Suarez fought Azumah the afternoon before and I was there. Also saw Big George and Hector Camacho on separate nights leading up to it (USA Network Tuesday Night Fights did ‘special editions’ with those headliners in AC on I think Friday and Saturday … Tyson-Spinks was, oddly, on a Monday).

My Pops took the family up to AC for those. He’s in his 80s now and really having some health problems — I was over at the house visiting him and mom two weekends ago and we got to talking about that trip and all the fighters we saw. Buster Douglas was on the Tyson undercard, too.

    Max Baer TKO8 Tony Galento

Not a full fight film just the newsreel so didn't score it. Decent amount of footage though.

Baer seemed REALLY angry. Which makes sense because Galento fought really dirty.

Galento has some success with a leaping left hook and the rabbit punches. Baer was swinging for the fences. Not exactly a battle of jabs hahaha.

    Terry Norris vs Joe Gatti
    Sep 10 1993

For perspective, this will be Norris' 10 defense of his title he won 3 years prior and his 4th fight in the last 9 months. He KOd Pat Lawlor in 3 rounds DEC 1992, kOd reigning IBF welter champ Maurce Blocker in 2 Feb 93, and KOd Troy Waters in 1 june 93. He had this fight sep 93 and would close out fighting (and losing) to Simon Brown DEC 1993. Modern fighters would of had maybe 1 fight in that timespan

    Round 1
Gatti enters 20-2 15 KOs and yes he's Arturo's older lesser known brother. Joe tries to exchange power shots with Norris so you know how this is gonna go. Lightning fast left hook down goes Gati, hes back up and Norris taking his time pressures him to the ropes where another combo is punctuated with a nasty right hand and that's it.

    Norris KO1

Alex Ramos v John Collins (5 point must in effect)

    Round 1: 5-4 Ramos
    Round 2: 5-5 Even
    Round 3: 5-3 Collins (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 5-4 Ramos
    Round 5: 5-4 Ramos
    Round 6: 5-5 Even
    Round 7: 5-4 Ramos
    Round 8: 5-4 Ramos
    Round 9: 5-4 Collins
    Round 10: 5-4 Collins

Total: 46-45 Ramos (actual scores: 46-45 Ramos, 46-45 Collins and 46-46 Even for a Draw)

Man, I remember this fight well. Another crossroads contest between hot prospects aired by NBC's Sportsworld. Man, did we ever know how good we had it. Anyways, I didn't score the bout back then, but felt Ramos edged it. It was hard for me to say that back then because I knew Collins personally. But now pen to paper my opinion hasn't varied. Ramos took his foot off the gas the last two rounds but still nicked it on my card. He couldn't miss Collins with that overhand right, but Collins was always scrappy and stayed with it. A decent scrap.
