I watched this one awhile ago this is how i had it.

    Jerry Quarry vs Mac Foster

    1 Foster
    2 Foster
    3 Foster
    4 Quarry
    5 Quarry
    6 Quarry winner by TKO

    58-57 Foster

I thought Foster controlled the fight early on with his jab, he also rocked Quarry in round 3 with a good right hand. But after a slow start from Quarry, he started moving his head more taking away Foster's jab. And was able to land some crunching body shots, the body shots are what turned it around for Quarry.

At the end of the 5th round Foster was getting worn out from the body shots, and you could see the writing was on the wall for Foster as he was badly hurt at the end of the 5th round. Quarry stepped it up even further in the 6th round, handing out a beating to Foster. Foster fell through the ropes and referee rightly waves the fight off.

Another decent competitive fight, but after the 5th round you could tell this was Quarry's fight.

Inspired by an @Flo_Raiden thread, I am going to watch three cruiserweight fights and decide which one is best. This is fight one

Champion Dwight Muhammad-Qawi vs Challenger Evander Holyfield 1
July 12, 1986 - WBA World Junior Heavyweight (Cruiserweight) Title

    Round 1 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 2 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 3 - 10-9 Holyfield Close
    Round 4 - 10-9 Muhammad-Qawi
    Round 5 - 10-9 Muhammad-Qawi
    Round 6 - 10-9 Holyfield Close
    Round 7 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 8 - 10-9 Holyfield Close
    Round 9 - 10-9 Muhammad-Qawi
    Round 10 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 11 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 12 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 13 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 14 - 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 15 - 10-9 Muhammad-Qawi

There was a point taken away from Muhammad-Qawi for low blows but they didn't say in which round.

My score 146-138 Holyfield. Actual scores 147-138 and 144-140 Holyfield and 143-141 Muhammad-Qawi.

What an enjoyable fight! You can see by the diversity in the scores that it was a tough fight to judge. The three rounds I deemed close all went to Holyfield so I could have had it much closer as well. The general tenor of the fight was that Holyfield would beat on DMQ for a while and Muhammad-Qawi would come storming back. Unfortunately, the storm became less and less violent as each round passed.

Admirable heart was shown by both men throughout and I'm glad I watched the fight. It reminded me of how good the younger Holyfield was and really reminded me of how tough Muhammad-Qawi was.

Roy Jones v Bernard Hopkins I (middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Jones
    Round 2: 10-9 Jones
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Jones
    Round 5: 10-9 Hopkins
    Round 6: 10-9 Jones
    Round 7: 10-9 Jones
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Hopkins
    Round 10: 10-9 Jones
    Round 11: 10-9 Hopkins
    Round 12: 10-9 Jones

Total: 117-113 Jones (actual scores: 116-112 x 3 all for Jones)

Never sat down to score this one before. I thought it was notable that Jones really got ragged as the fight progressed and Hopkins really showed some strength and urgency as the fight whittled down. Jones was just too versatile for Hopkins, but I did think while watching this that this kind of a fight was really missing from Hopkins' performances over the years. I think he could have endeared himself to fans more if he fought with this kind of intensity, rather than slowing fights down to a crawl.

Champion Vassili Jirov vs James Toney
April 26, 2003 - IBF World Cruiserweight Title

    Round 1 - 10-9 Jirov
    Round 2 - 10-9 Jirov
    Round 3 - 10-9 Toney
    Round 4 - 10-9 Jirov
    Round 5 - 10-9 Jirov
    Round 6 - 10-9 Toney
    Round 7 - 10-9 Toney
Round 8 - 10-9 Jirov Jirov also had a point deducted for a low blow
    Round 9 - 10-9 Jirov
    Round 10 - 10-9 Toney
    Round 11 - 10-9 Toney
    Round 12 - 10-8 Toney

My score 114-112 Toney. Actual scores 117-109 twice and 116-110 all for Toney

The scoring concept for almost every round of this fight is deciding whether Toney's power and quality was worth more than Jirov's quantity. The judges certainly preferred Toney's fighting style more. I do have a hard time seeing Toney winning nine of the rounds as two judges scored it. Very interesting fight to watch and a great display of Toney's unorthodox but highly entertaining style.

Fogger, you and I saw this similarly. Maybe not in every round, but the concept of quality and quantity. I scored this some time back. This is what I wrote:

    Vassily Jirov v James Toney

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Jirov
    Round 3: 10-9 Toney
    Round 4: 10-9 Jirov
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Jirov
    Round 7: 10-9 Toney
Round 8: 9-9 Even (Jirov's round but deducted a point for a low blow)
    Round 9: 10-9 Jirov
    Round 10: 10-9 Toney
    Round 11: 10-9 Jirov
    Round 12: 10-8 Toney (scores a knockdown)

Total: 114-114 Draw (actual scores: 117-109, 116-110 and 117-109 all for Toney)

IMO, this was the makeup for Toney-Tiberi. In fact, you could call it Toney-Tiberi II. By this I mean - and I scored that fight for Toney - weighing the most punches v the more substantial punches. This, of course, is up to the judge and is a very fine line. But an excellent bout, despite my viewing it as a very close encounter.

Ralph Dupas W10 Charley Scott (4)

At @scartissue 's recommendation, I checked this one out. Interesting fight. I hadn't seen Dupas before, and I think I have to see more of him, because I inferred from Dunphy's input that he was more of a clever boxer and that this represented a straying of sorts from the norm. Whatever it was, it worked, and showed a true profesionalism, super-heady fighting the likes of which are just no longer there in today's game, such as it is. Of course, it took the span of 102 fights apparently to get Dupas to that level of knowhow, so that would impair the chances of today's fighters getting that schooled.

This was perhaps THE best example I've ever seen of utilizing side-to-side movement on an opponent while sticking to their chest. Dupas was a ghost in there, bouncing from one side of Scott's vision to the other, then bounding in, spinning, flurrying, then hooping back and then to the side again, all without causing butts if you can believe it. He was masterful.

Scott is no slouch, a real workhorse fringe-contender type who is tough as nails and produces good work, but he always seems to be matched so tough. With his toughness and good fundamentals, he was a stern test for anyone. A true gatekeeper.
He does some good things in this fight, and all the rounds are honestly contested, but Dupas is just sharper and better. It seems more lopsided on paper than it was to watch it.

    Good recommendation.

    1. Scott
    2. Dupas
    3. Dupas
    4. Dupas
    5. Dupas
    6. Dupas
    7. Even
    8. Dupas
    9. Dupas
    10. Dupas

    99-92 Dupas.

We definitely had the same idea. This was also a great fight to show why the judges watch the fight from different sides of the ring. A lot of this bout was fought in close quarters and there were a good number of times when the television point of view made it difficulty to see what landed and what didn't, especially related to Jirov's punches.

I’ve always thought of Nelson-Fenech I that way — depending on which view you had as a judge that’s a hard fight to score. A judge can’t score what he cannot see.

Jeff Fenech v Jerome Coffee (bantamweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 4: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 7: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 8: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 9: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 10: 10-9 Coffee
    Round 11: 10-9 Coffee
    Round 12: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 Fenech
    Round 15: 10-9 Coffee

Total: 147-141 Fenech (actual scores: 148-140, 146-141 and 145-140 all for Fenech)

This fight kind of grew on me. At first I was thinking that it was going to be a long 15 rounds but it turned into a fairly decent little contest. I wouldn't be telling anyone this is some 'must see' but not bad. Fenech was still in his incubation period and Coffee, who wasn't a bad boxer, was really trying to land the Ken Norton overhand right, but his lacked the pop of Ken's. One thing I will mention, referee Rudy Battle, for all his verbal and physical bluster throughout the fight, did nothing when Fenech deliberately butted Coffee when the bell ended the 6th. I would have immediately taken a point from him, it was that purposeful.

I knew Kid Coffee a little bit — really knew his manager, Nashville attorney Stan Allen, who had some prospects but never quite got the big payoff or world champion that he coveted. Also managed Clint Jackson and Loren Ross, who, like Coffee, were big amateur stars out of Nashville.

Stan was a great guy. Coffee was pretty quiet the times I was around him but he was slick.

Watched this again because there's an argument going on in the general forum about this one
Lewis is almost 38 here and a career high 256 1/2. Vitali is 248. Lennox at the longest layoff of his career of 377 days

    Klitchsko 32-1 31 KOs
    Lewis 40-2-1 31 KOs

    Round 1
Both guys getting physical as they have to be broken up most of the round. Klitchsko lands about 3 nice right hands off the jab. Lewis ends the round with an overhand and an uppercut.
    10-9 Klitchsko

    Round 2
All klitchsjo, wow he staggers Lewis all over the ring this round. Lewis gets a hard jab in midway through the round and a few eights towards the end, but Klitchsko just beat Lewis to the punch and had Lennox on wobbly legs. Crowd is HYPED.
    10-9 Klitchsko
    20-18 Klitchsko

    Round 3
Lewis comes alive and starts landing on Klitchsko and we got the beginning of the bad cut on Klitchsko's eyelid. This is a slugfest, both guys landing shots, blood streaming from Vitalis face (right hand did it).
    10-9 Lewis
    29-28 Klitchsko

    Round 4
Pace has slowed, Lewis jabbing better, Klitchsko still landing punches but both guys look tired, Klitchsko engaging clinches this round, eye is getting worse, but he outhustles Lewis
    10-9 Klitchsko
    39-37 Klitchsko

    Round 5
Lewis at one point just blasts Klitchsko to the body with like 8 hooks while Vitali is walking him to the ropes in a clinch, it looks brutal. Klitschko's eye getting bad now
    10-9 Klitchsko
    49-46 Klitchsko

    Round 6
Both guys look exhausted, Klitchsko from the pace, Lewis from being out of shape coming in to the fight. Massive uppercut almost takes Vitali's head off. Round ends with Klitschko holding on as he eats a few hard shots
    10-9 Lewis
    58-56 Klitchsko
Both guys look exhausted as the fight ends. Lewis was figuring out Klitchsko but he was just not in shape for this fight to capitalize on it like he should. Vitali had the unfortunate luck of his face getting cut from Lewis' punches, but that's what happened. I'm kind of bummed for Vitali because he did deserve a rematch, but Lewis had enough of boxing.
Also, that cut was done via punches, not Lewis' hair btw

Was in the mood for some bombs-away today and went with some hard-luck fighters. Namely, Oleg Maskaev, Alex Stewart and Derrick Jefferson. Three fighters who always seemed to lose by KO when they stepped up in class. Here we go.......

    Oleg Maskaev v Alex Stewart

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-8 OM (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 OM
    Round 5: 10-9 OM
    Round 6: 10-9 OM
Round 7: Maskaev drops and stops Stewart

Total through 6 completed rounds: 60-55 Maskaev (actual scores not known)

The film on this bout was crap and it wasn't really a bombs-away. The 2nd round was about the best as Stewart staggered Maskaev shortly after he himself was dropped. Strangely, the ref had to coax Stewart up at '8', as he was just staring at the ref. Another ref would have just counted him out because it didn't look like he was in any hurry to get up. Stewart really should have learned to jab more instead of simply engaging. He could have set up a lot with that hard jab.

    Oleg Maskaev v Derrick Jefferson

    Round 1: 10-8 OM (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-8 OM (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
Round 4: The ref stops the bout with DJ barely able to walk

Total through 3 completed rounds 30-26 Maskaev (actual scores unknown)

In the first round OM drops DJ and he injures his leg. It doesn't get any better. DJ could not get any leverage on his shots although he tried. OM hurt him again in the 3rd but DJ really fought back, which is why I scored that even. All in all, I really didn't get the bombs-away I wanted, but I was watching fights, so what the hell.

My updated scorecard after watching the high quality version.

    1 Holmes
    2 Holmes
    3 Holmes
    4 Holmes
    5 Holmes
    6 Holmes
    7 Holmes
    8 Norton
    9 Norton
    10 Norton
    11 Norton
    12 Norton
    13 Holmes 10-8
    14 Norton
    15 Norton

    143-141 Holmes

A few differences i scored the 7th and 9th round differently, and i also scored the 13th round a 10-8 for Holmes. I thought the 13th round was a very dominant round for Holmes and worthy of a 10-8 round watching it again.

Riddick Bowe vs Evander Holyfield 1

    1 Holyfield
    2 Bowe
    3 Bowe
    4 Bowe
    5 Holyfield
    6 Bowe
    7 Bowe
    8 Holyfield
    9 Holyfield
    10 Bowe
    11 Bowe 10-8 knockdown
    12 Bowe

    116-111 Bowe

So i decided to treat myself to another Heavyweight classic in high definition, i've never actually sat down and done a proper scorecard for this fight. Two judges had it 117-110 x2 and another judge had it 115-112. My scorecard of 116-111 is right in the middle of those scorecards and seems to be fairly spot on.

I felt like Holyfield had a very good 1st round sticking and moving, but then he got involved in a vicious exchange in the 2nd round. And that altered Holyfield's gameplan and he started to brawl unwisely with the bigger man after that.

Overall this fight was actually bit more competitive than i remember, i thought the fight was very much up in the air after 9 rounds. Until Bowe started to really distant himself from Holyfield in the final 3 rounds.

Amazing fight and a pleasure to watch it in HD.
