Maurice Hope v Rocky Mattioli II (jr. middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Hope
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Mattioli
    Round 4: 10-9 Hope
    Round 5: 10-9 Hope
    Round 6: 10-9 Mattioli
    Round 7: 10-9 Mattioli
    Round 8: 10-9 Hope
    Round 9: 10-9 Hope
    Round 10: 10-9 Hope
    Round 11: Hope stops Mattioli

Total through 10 completed rounds: 97-94 Hope (actual scores: 98-92, 98-91 and another 98-91 all with Hope leading)

I remember missing this one back in the day, but I'm sorry I never checked it out sooner. A damn good fight! I had it closer than the officials. I felt Mattioli's lead right was a bit of an equalizer, although the Hope stabbing jab eventually took its toll on Rocky. But again, I do recommend this bout. Very evenly matched and the styles just gelled. Also of note that I was enjoying was the fact that Cosell didn't know his mic was on during the 1 minute breaks. Man, do you think there was some animosity between he and Alex Wallau??

I saw this when it aired live but haven’t revisited it. I remembered it being a good scrap but with Hope being clearly better … but Mattioli kept coming and wasn’t easy to dissuade. Glad to see you found it.

    Jeff Chandler D15 Eijiro Murata

I've seen a few of Chandler's efforts and like his all-round style so decided to slog through this one. Held in Japan, this was Murata's second go at a world title, having drawn with Pintor over 15 just a bit before this. I can't think of another fighter whose first two tries at a title both ended in draws. Remarkable.

Honestly though, Murata has that kind of style. He's not terribly busy here, potshots with powerful but infrequent right hands, and mauls in the clinches. Kind of an ugly fight to watch, really. Chandler tries to be more textbook about it, but the odd herky-jerkiness to Murata' style is anathema to such niceties. Still, a fair decision in the challenger's hometown. BIg ups to the power-that-be for that, I had no problem at all with the decision. Good thing for Chandler Murata wasn't Venezuelan.

As the bout progressed, you could see Chandler beginning to understand the worth of his own uppercut, and while most of them missed or were smothered in close, they would be a weapon against Murata in no less than two more tries at Chandler's title.

This was exceedingly difficult to score by the way, a real chore. I'd probably see it slightly different each time.

Alex Ramos v Mark Frazie (scoring on a rounds basis)

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Ramos
    Round 3: Ramos
    Round 4: Ramos
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Frazie
    Round 7: Ramos
    Round 8: Even
Round 9: Ramos (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: Ramos

Total: 6-1-3 Ramos (actual scores: 7-2-1, 6-3-1 and 8-2 all for Ramos)

This was a good old-fashioned clubfight out of Atlantic City between two bright prospects. It was a decent scrap but I wouldn't call it a must-see. Ramos imposed his strength and power on Frazie who just could not hold him off. Interesting was the 7-2-1 score, which was by Harold Lederman, who did not score even rounds. But there were a few here that were damn close. Ed Derian announced Harold's score as '7-1', which I thought was a bit odd until I looked it up on boxrec. He clearly just missed a number.

On the subject of Frazie, I am actually replying to one of my own posts here. Now this is a must-see. This is the first fight between Frazie and Dwight 'Tiger' Walker. Guys, I wouldn't steer you wrong. You have got to see this fight for what happens. Read my post and then check out the fight and the post-fight interview just for some head-scratching fun.

    Sergio Martinez vs Antonio Margarito

    Round 1: 9-8 Margarito
    Round 2: 10-9 Margarito
    Round 3: 10-9 Martinez. Close.
    Round 4: 10-9 Margarito
Round 5: 10-9 Margarito. Power gap is apparent.
    Round 6: 10-9 Margarito
Round 7: tony stops him at the end of the round.

Never saw this one. Martinez fought his best fight but was just overpowered.

Ferdie did a better job refereeing the interview than Mercante did reffing the fight, haha.

Champion Carl Thompson vs Challenger Chris Eubank 1
April 18, 1998 - WBO World Cruiserweight Title

    Round 1 - 10-9 Eubank Close
    Round 2 - 10-9 Eubank
    Round 3 - 10-9 Thompson
    Round 4 - 10-8 Eubank
    Round 5 - 10-9 Eubank
    Round 6 - 10-9 Thompson
    Round 7 - 10-9 Thompson]
    Round 8 - 10-9 Thompson
    Round 9 - 10-10 Even
    Round 10 - 10-9 Thompson
    Round 11 - 10-9 Thompson
    Round 12 - 10-10 Even

My Score 115-114 Thompson, Actual scores 116-113 and 114-113 twice, all for Thompson.

What an interesting fight. Eubank was able to hurt Thompson despite moving up two weight classes. He just couldn't put him away. However, thanks to his left eye becoming nothing more than a slit by round five, Eubank spent a lot of the last five rounds covering up and moving away.

    Round 2: 10-9 Eubank
    Round 3: 10-9 Thompson

    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Thompson
Round 7: 10-9 Thompson (Eubank blew it! He had him and just stared at him. That is a moment in time that should justifiably haunt him)

    Round 9: 10-9 Thompson
    Round 10: 10-9 Thompson

Just to add to @scartissue scorecard this is how i had it also.

Chris Eubank vs Carl Thompson 1

    1 Eubank
    2 Eubank
    3 Thompson
    4 Eubank 10-8 knockdown
    5 Even
    6 Thompson
    7 Eubank
    8 Thompson
    9 Thompson
    10 Thompson
    11 Thompson
    12 Eubank

    114-114 Draw

I watched this again because of a recent thread regarding this fight, so i thought i'd take a look at this classic Cruiserweight fight again. When i watched this fight a few years ago i had Thompson edging it, watching it back again i scored it a draw.

I think this fight comes down to how you scored rounds 5 6 7, these rounds IMO were debatable and i could see differing opinions on these rounds. Do you like Thompson's workrate during the 3 minutes, or do you like Eubank's big moments in the rounds where he wobbles/staggers Thompson.

Overall the fight was as good as i remember, a classic fight and alot of bravery shown from Eubank. Who looked better in this fight while being past his best and above his natural weightclass, than he did in quite a few of his uninspiring title defences in his prime.

Here's my take on Eubank-Thompson 1, since all the kids are doing it.

Wasn't that the strangest thing in the seventh round, Thompson moved away, noticeably hurt, and Eubank did nothing.
