@scartissue I know you like your 80s Heavyweight boxing, recently a feast of rare Marvis Frazier fights have surfaced on YT. His fights vs Bugner, Ribalta, Bonecrusher, etc. I've heard Bonecrusher vs Frazier was very entertaining, and having just watched 1st round. If the fight continues like that then that fight will be a treat to watch.

See that! Great minds. I penciled that in this morning. I saw the Bugner fight back in the day but I didn’t see the bone crusher fight. Will check it out.

Are Leon Spinks-Scott LeDoux or Pipino Cuevas-Randy Shields out there anywhere aside from paying for a DVD?

    Larry Holmes v Brian Nielsen

    Round 1: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 2: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 3: 10-9 Nielsen
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Nielsen
    Round 6: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 7: 10-9 Nielsen
    Round 8: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 11: 10-9 Holmes
    Round 12: 10-9 Holmes

Total: 117-113 Holmes (actual scores: 116-113 and 115-113 both for Nielsen and a 116-115 for Holmes with Nielsen taking it on a split decision)

D, I checked this fight out today and then checked the history and saw that you gave a nice, comprehensive detail on the fight. I wouldn't change a thing in what you mentioned. Although this was part of Holmes' senior tour, he still could throw those sharp jabs and jolting right hands, whereas Nielsen was more of a mauling, clubbing type puncher. I'll give both their dues. They actually chugged their way through to give the crowd a decent contest. You are also right, D, when you mentioned that there was no way Larry lost this fight.

One more thing, D, I had the same issue you did with the 5th round gone mostly missing. But I found another version that was 56 minutes long, which had the 5th round in its entirety.

@Dynamicpuncher , checking this out now.

    Bonecrusher Smith v Marvis Frazier

    Round 1: 10-9 Smith
    Round 2: 10-9 Smith
    Round 3: 10-9 Frazier
    Round 4: 10-9 Frazier
    Round 5: 10-8 Smith (scores a knockdown)
    Round 6: 10-9 Frazier
    Round 7: 10-9 Frazier
    Round 8: 10-9 Frazier
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-10 Even

Total: 96-95 Frazier (actual scores: 96-95, 96-95 and 97-93 all for Frazier)

The bout was fairly lively until the 9th and 10th when Frazier just stopped fighting. He did enough to stay in the round but I couldn't give either round to any particular fighter. Bonecrusher always had the history of gassing early and Frazier just did a lot of hopping around without doing much in the 1st, 2nd, 9th and 10th. But still and all, decent fight through the middle rounds. Y'know, knowing Bonecrusher's history, I know he could stop a man early (Witherspoon and Weaver) or suddenly (Bruno after being widely outpointed) but I will never understand the Weaver rematch. How did he widely outpoint Weaver? He never showed stamina, nor any boxing ability. That fight is always a mystery to me.

Recently watched Lewis destroy Ruddock but was fascinated by the preflight buzz around Patterson training Razor. Did Ruddock retain Floyd post that disaster or was he fired immediately after?

    Bonecrusher Smith v Marvis Frazier

    1 Bonecrusher
    2 Bonecrusher
    3 Frazier
    4 Frazier
    5 Bonecrusher 10-8 knockdown
    6 Frazier
    7 Frazier
    8 Frazier
    9 Even
    10 Bonecrusher

    95-95 Draw

We pretty much agreed on most of the rounds i thought round 8, 9, 10 were debatable rounds. Smith tried to bomb out Frazier early in 1st round. But i was quite impressed how relaxed Frazier was in dealing with Bonecrusher's early swarming effort, and even comeback later in the round the rock Smith.

Frazier throughout most of the fight was just very tenacious and outworked Bonecrusher, although there were some dangerous moments in the fight for Frazier, when Bonecrusher got Frazier on the ropes and wailed at him.

Frazier fell like a falling pine tree when Bonecrusher, nailed him with that right hand in 5th round. Lucky for Frazier that was at the end of the round. Bonecrusher to his credit tried to finish the job early in 6th round by wail away at Frazier on ropes. But Frazier was too slippery for Bonecrusher for the most part, and again outworked Bonecrusher with his tenacious inside fighting.

I do agree with you in later rounds Frazier decided to stop fighting for some reason, i do feel like Bonecrusher had an argument for winning 9th round, as he did land best punch of the round. Although Frazier did have a little rally at the end of the round, a very close round hard to call which is why i called it even like you did. I do think Bonecrusher won 10th round though, as he was the only one doing the fighting and he was the aggressor.

Overall it was a decent fight for 8 rounds, but like you said the fight went a bit passive down the stretch. I was impressed how Frazier dealt with some scary moments vs Bonecrusher. And he did show some heart and was tenacious against bigger man so he deserves credit, as for Bonecrusher i felt like the fight was winnable for him, but he was too inconsistent with his workrate throughout.

    Marvis Frazier vs James Tillis

    1 Tillis
    2 Tillis 10-8 standing 8 count
    3 Frazier
    4 Frazier
    5 Frazier
    6 Frazier
    7 Frazier
    8 Frazier
    9 Frazier
    10 Frazier

    97-92 Frazier

So another Marvis Frazier fight i plan to watch all his notable fights over Christmas.

This was a frustrating fight to watch in regards to Tillis, as he often does he starts off great dancing putting punches together looking like a poor mans Ali. In the 2nd he badly hurt Frazier with a left hook and then proceeded to pummel Frazier against the ropes, it looked like Tillis was seconds away from earning a TKO. Until the referee administered a standing 8 count, which was definitely very beneficial to Frazier allowing him to recover from that onslaught.

From that point on it turned into a typical Tills fight, starts off great then goes into fighting in 1st gear never upping the pace. And Frazier did what he does and that was be tenacious, and he outworked the lazy Tillis over 10 rounds to earn a pretty wide decision after a rocky start.

    Wilfredo Vasquez D12 Takuya Muguruma

At the behest of @Flo_Raiden, I took a look at this one and he's right; it's well worth watching! Excellent scrap, and Muguruma's face afterward was the kind that sinks a thousand ships, or whatever the saying is. Horrific swelling.

    Anyway, the fight............

The draw was I suppose predictable enough; held in Japan, the Japanese challenger the aggressor and all. Not surprising and I've seen worse decisions, but I thought Vasquez did enough to squeak by. Close fight, but Vasquez's much harder punches and artful way of fighting off the ropes without entirely letting the opponent take the play away should have got him the nod.

Vasquez was impressive here for two things chiefly; first, his stamina. Muguruma never relented except for late in the fight, always hammering away at whatever he could find, and that's exhausting for BOTH guys. Vasquez never lost his legs and remained nimble in defense the whole while. Very impressive, considering the amount of shots he had to exert himself to elude or absorb.

Second was his ability to have his back against the ropes and still manage to find punching room through the use of upper-body movement and bouncing off the ropes to varying degrees to make them work for him. A truly professional set of skills there.

Muguruma was just stupidly tough. His eyes started to swell about three rounds in, and then his head started expanding sort of sideways by about the midway point. It just kept going in that direction from that point on.

    1. Muguruma
    2. Vasquez
    3. Muguruma
    4. Vasquez
    5. Muguruma
    6. Vasquez
    7. Vasquez
    8. Muguruma
    9. Vasquez (Muguruma finally takes a few backward steps)
    10. Vasquez
    11. Muguruma (heroic turnaround from the challenger, forcing Vasquez back on his heels)
    12. Vasquez (champion comes back to life and hammers Muguruma)

    115-113 Vasquez.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything for Cuevas vs Shields, but I'll keep an eye out.

Awesome thread btw Lads. Great input.
