I kinda' zoned out of serious Boxing talk for a year or so (a year or so back) and missed the part where he lost it completely. I just started seeing him on on every so often, nowadays I can't keep up with him I love it, I love it more when he seriously talks Boxing though, one of my faves in fact.

Off his nut, if he's ever in the Southampton area I'd love to have a joint with him. I bet he's the most boring **** ever in real life though ;-) :tong

 

You'd be surprised how many people have said it was close. Some have even had Benitez up at the time of the stoppage.

That's what I'd always heard until I watched it a few years ago, and I saw nothing of the sort. Most agree with me, but there are a lot who don't. I thought I'd give it a re-watch to see if my opinions had changed, but no, not at all. Plenty of close rounds from the 4th until about the 9th or 10th, but Leonard was almost constantly dictating with his jab and better work when he did decide to let his hands go.

 

Just finished scoring it, by the way.

So many rounds were so close that I could conceivably see someone giving 5 or even possibly 6 (if you're a big Benitez fan) to Benitez, but with the knockdowns Leonard should've still won by 5 points at the very least had the fight not been unfairly stopped. I personally would've had him winning by 10 (10 to Leonard with two 10-8 rounds, 2 to Benitez, 3 even), 148-138.

 

I never bothered to score it other than in my head but had it about 11-3 or 10-4 going into the last round. Still, it was evidently Rays fight, he beat Benitez in every department.

Incredible victory.

 

I just watched Greg Page vs Scott LeDoux. I was pretty much laughing my ass off all the way up until the KO. LeDoux was completely outclassed and probably didn't land one punch during the entire 4 rounds it lasted. Greg Page, when he wasn't clowning his opponent something awful, was landing with every jab he threw, and nearly every right cross he brought behind it. The KO blow was classic. LeDoux comes out for the 4th, throws a left hook that missed by miles, Page stops as if it to say, "negro please", and then unleashes a one-two. The right hand lands on the top of LeDoux's head, he goes down and the referee waves it off.

I was very impressed with Page's jab and handspeed.

 

Flea and Bujia. Some people have Leonard too far ahead, some give Benitez too much credit. The truth is somewhere inbetween. It was a relatively close fight but Leonard was ahead. I'll say this though, that fight is one of the most underrated in Ray's career. Benitez was driving him mad because Leonard was finding it hard to catch him clean. So Leonard realises he needs to vary the speed and look of his punches...he starts throwing an up jab from below Benitez' direct line of sight and also aims at his chest. This is precisely what got him the KD. Pure genuis.

 

Actually Benitez didn't really get going until about the 4th or 5th round. The first 3 rounds were a wash in Leonard's favour, and he was landing the jab at will. Rounds 4 until around 10-11 or what have you were typically very close, though. Leonard edging most of them with his cleaner punches.

As I said, though, so many of the rounds were so close that I'd have no issue with a closer score, so long as it wasn't too close. Leonard was clearly the better man.

Benitez vs Leonard is a close fight in terms of the action but its hard to translate into a score as Leonard gets a thin edge in most rounds IMO. Great fight though.

 

Yep. He toyed with the guy and those combos and every part of his game was impressive.The prepared and in shape version of Page was as good as anyone, and maybe better, than anyone else back then. After that impressive showing against Scott, he went off the radar as far as potential matches went, was the problem. Nobody was going to put their guy in with him because of the risk. So he ended up with chump change and 2nd tier fights for awhile and did not prepare.

He saw there was never going to be a pot of gold. More like a mechanical rabbit in front of the dog at the race track. So disheartening. We saw Thomas get the same thing a few years later and these guys just could not secure a big payday with the big names like Cooney or Holmes. So they stopped getting razor sharp for fights and became beatable.
