Y'know, I enjoyed this trilogy but never scored it when I first watched them. This exercise is designed to remedy that situation beginning with:

Evander Holyfield v Riddick Bowe I (heavyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 4: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 5: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 8: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 9: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 10: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 11: 10-8 Bowe (scores a knockdown)
    Round 12: 10-9 Bowe

Total: 117-112 Bowe (actual scores: 115-112, 117-110 and another 117-110 all for Bowe)

I was really hyped up back in the day for this one, cheering everything Holyfield threw. His punches were so jolting throughout this bout I thought he was going to take Riddick out. But Bowe was made of stern stuff too and was the busier of the two. They both gave us some brilliant exchanges. Excellent fight.

    Munguia vs Sergey Derevyanchenko

    M 2,4,6,7,11,12 * 10-8 12th
    D 1,3,5,8,9,10

Great fight and not a robbery by any means. I actually found this fight quite easy to score with most rounds won big. I only felt round 6 and 7 were swing rounds and the 6th is how Mannix got 114-113 the other way but we had identical cards. Munguia looked finished after the tenth and looked like a beaten man in the corner. I cannot believe he mustered the will to go out and win the 11th in dominant fashion and then drop Sergey in the 12th. Close fight but I was actually more impressed with Munguia's performance than I thought would be the case

They fought like lightweights. This fight is not and cannot be overrated. They scared the gods with this one.

I think it’s justifiably one of the 10 greatest heavyweight title fights ever.

    Sam Goodman SD12 Ra'eese Aleem

    Goodman looks significantly bigger.

It's an absorbing, close fight, with rounds that are difficult to score, lots of low-quality punches being thrown, jab not prevelant. I think ALeem has the better start with the slightly better technique, Goodman taking his time to adjust to the southpaw stance Aleem starts off with I reckon, might cost him. Round two is even, but I scored it to Aleem on the better quality punches, a counter hook, an uppercut to the body. The third is very nearly a re-run.

Goodman finally gets one on my card in the fourth, I thought he found his man a little more with the jab, held the line a little better, also scored a nice chopping right. But Aleem goes back to out-hitting Goodman in terms of quality in the fifth and sixth, Goodman is close to dead on my card. Very interesting to see Goodman control the range but losing. Aleem is just that little bit better at doing fighting, landing hard, accurate punches, and it may just have come down to experience. 5-1 Aleem after six.

I also gave ALeem the seventh, but here is what is weird: i gave Goodman the 8th, 9th and 10th all, the 8th and 10th pretty big. He seems to have put the pressure right on Aleemcoming a bit squarer to chance the right hand, using his size to push Aleem back a bit by which I mean he's walking ALeem back further than he would want to go. The freaky thing is i'm pretty sure I heard commentary state that Goodman's corner had told him that he needed to win all remaining five rounds and so far he has done that. He also clearly wins the 11th and 12th  So excepting the 9th which was closer, but I believe still a Goodman round, he won 8-12 to rescue a draw on my card and presumably this is how he was able to win the fight with the judges. Showtimte had Goodman 5-1 down after six, like I did, with disagreement on two rounds. This is one of the spookiest fight cards I've put up. I can't even really say Aleem tired, though Goodman definitely looked the fitter of the two very late.

    Goodman:4,8,9,10,11,12.
    Aleem:1,2,3,5,6,7.

So I have it a draw - how Aleem let that slip, I'll never know. Offical cards were 116-112, 117-111, 112-116.

Riddick Bowe v Evander Holy field II (Heavyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 6: 10-9 Holyfield
Round 7: 10-10 Even (Bowe took the first half, then the fan-man entered the ring. After the ring was cleared and the fight resumed, Holyfield took the second half)
    Round 8: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 9: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 10: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 11: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 12: 10-9 Bowe

Total: 116-115 Holyfield (actual scores: 115-114 and a 115-113 both for Holyfield, with a 114-114 Even score for a majority win for Holyfield)

Another excellent contest produced by these two, but I did enjoy the first encounter better. Although Bowe did have some great success with the jab, Holyfield's jolting shots were more substantial. The pivotal part of the fight on my card was the Fan-Man. I had Bowe winning that first half of the 7th, but then the momentum shifted after the break resulting in an Even round on my card. If that hadn't happened and I was an official judge, I would have had Bowe retaining his title on a draw. Man, one round can make or break you. Really enjoying this series. Number 3 is next.

    Mike McCallum vs James Toney

Astounding technical boxing feast, maybe the greatest ever. Huge props for Toney for fighting the often avoided McCallum. It is a shame the idiots at the WBA stripped Mike before the fight as would have been nice for both to keep their belts after the official score of a draw. If this was a 15 rounder I suspect James may have stopped the iron chinned Bodysnatcher but Toney also looked pretty spent after his heroic final round rally. However I had Mike winning simply through greater work rate. Whenever there was a lull in the action he was always popping the jab while Toney was stalking and relying on a single shot. The commentators had Toney winning and I suspect at ringside James' harder punches made more of an impression, but on TV Mike seemed to sneak more rounds.

Keep in mind McCallum was 35 to Toney's 23 which makes his performance even more remarkable, it is possible this and my affection for Mike made me slightly biased! Whichever way you scored it you are witnessing two of the greatest fighters to lace up gloves.

    1 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    2 - McCallum 9 vs Toney 10

    3 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    4 - McCallum 9 vs Toney 10

    5 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    6 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    7 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    8 - McCallum 9 vs Toney 10

    9 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    10 - McCallum 9 vs Toney 10

    11 - McCallum 10 vs Toney 9

    12 - McCallum 9 vs Toney 10

    FINAL McCallum 115 Toney 113

    Lennox Lewis vs Zeljko Mavrocic

    Heavyweight Title

I revisited this contest because a pal told me that he believed Mavrovic has one of the best chins ever and he pointed me to this fight to underline his point.

I know I watched this back in the day but needed to refresh my memory. It’s a pretty easy fight to score tbh because Lewis was pretty dominant. But yes my pal was right, Mavrovic stood up very well to some murderous shots… but he also delivered a few of his own at times it has to be said.

    Round 1: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 2: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 3: Lewis 9 Mavrovic 10
    Round 4: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 5: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 6: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 7: Lewis 9 Mavrovic 10
    Round 8: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 9: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 10: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 11: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9
    Round 12: Lewis 10 Mavrovic 9

    Lewis 118 Mavrovic 110

Round 7 looked briefly as though Lewis was teetering on the brink of being stopped as Mavrovic had him pinned against the ropes and fired some hard shots at Lennox’s chin. But Lewis proved he had some tough ol whiskers…not the glass jawed specimen some would have you believe! Lewis survived and fought back well in that round catching Mavrovic with some hard shots of his own. I gave that round to Mav despite the Lewis fight back.

Apart from that and a good third round showing from Mav, it was basically all Lewis who jabbed, hooked and upoercut his way to a convincing win.

And yes, kudos to Mavrovic whose chin stood up superbly to a very stern examination from the champion.

Riddick Bowe v Evander Holyfield III (title for Bowe only)

    Round 1: 10-9 Holyfield
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Bowe
    Round 4: 10-9 Bowe
Round 5: 9-9 (Bowe's round but docked a point for a low blow)
    Round 6: 10-8 Holyfield (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-9 Bowe
Round 8: Bowe drops Holyfield twice and the bout is stopped

Total through 7 completed rounds: 66-66 Even (actual scores: all 3 officials scored it 66-65 for Holyfield)

I'm sure the HBO officials weren't too pleased with George Foreman's, "Holyfield's going to end up in a pine box!" analogy during their production, but it was apt. For a guy like Holyfield, who was still flying in the 15th against Qawi weighing about 190, to be exhausted in the 5th round here tells a tale. I recall when I first saw this live that I felt it was the worst followup to a knockdown I had seen in the 6th when Evander dropped Bowe. Seeing it again, however, I will say his initial followup wasn't bad but then it quickly petered out. Clearly back then I was expecting more of the old Holyfield who, I believe, would have finished Bowe off. Regardless, an awesome trilogy.

I think whole trilogy stands up as great, unlike Ward/Gatti which I think is very overrated as a trilogy outside of the 1st fight.

Yeah fights II and III were not as incredible as the first, but still delightfully fun and classics in my mind.

I’m not going to credit him as having an ATG chin off one fight … when he basically had a one-fight career.

IIRC after Lewis, Mavro had a series of ‘he’s going to fight/no, turns out he’s not’ non-appearances and quietly retired for no reason.

Be a great ‘whatever happened to’ for someone to do.

I actually agree with you. I checked out some of his other fights and his chin wasn’t really tested to be honest so I can’t agree or disagree with my friend that he had a granite chin.
All I can say is that he showed great fortitude and a sturdy jaw in this particular fight.

I can't think of a good place to say this, so I will say it here, mildly off-topic, which I am not used to sanctioning: @eslubin videos are now listed as private. That was hard news to deliver, guys. We're going to get through this together. But I cannot score any of those matches anymore, so it's kind of on-topic, in its way.
