I haven't seen it probably since it happened, wasn't he getting pummelled in the corner? Been a while.

If memory serves, Floyd buckled him a bit and threw a flurry to follow up but wasn’t landing much cleanly, or at least with much on them. But it’s been a while for me, too … I’m going from my initial impression.

Wasn't the Manfredy/Mayweather stoppage on the same card as another controversial stoppage Tua vs Rahman ? The Tua one was really bad but i didn't think the Manfredy was too bad, although it could've been stopped a tad too soon.

    Jesse Ferguson v Bobby Harris

    Round 1: 10-9 Harris
    Round 2: 10-9 Harris
    Round 3: 10-8 Ferguson (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-8 Ferguson (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Ferguson
    Round 7: 10-9 Ferguson
    Round 8: 10-9 Ferguson
    Round 9: 10-9 Ferguson
    Round 10: 10-9 Ferguson

Total: 98-91 Ferguson (actual scores: 97-91, 96-94 and 95-94 all for Ferguson)

Man, this had all the earmarks of a perfect segue for an unbeaten fighter to move onto the next rung of the ladder on the back of a grizzled old veteran. However, in this case the young Turk with an 18-0 (12) record was going up against the Boogey Man. At that point one has to realize that anything could happen and did.

Harris had a nice bouncy style with a sharp jab and short, sharp punches, but once Jesse realized he could get that right hand over Bobby's low-hanging left he just kept hurting him throughout. It's amazing how many upsets Jesse pulled throughout his career. Really amazing. As for Harris, he didn't have too many more fights in his career after this, which I'm happy for. He had a decent crowd-pleasing style, but for an 19 bout veteran, he sounded like Anthony Quinn's Mountain Rivera. I swear, his post-fight interview was like listening to a 200 fight caricature of a fighter one would see in an old movie. I hope he's OK today.

Stoppage wasn't too bad. Manfredy got buckled by a counter right off the ropes; Floyd than followed with a volley of mostly unanswered shots. Some of the shots upstairs missed, but a flush uppecut snapped back the head, and a left hook to the temple sent Manfredy into a seated position on the bottom rope (should have been called a KD). When Manfredy stood up Floyd got home with a couple of one twos and that's when the official stopped the fight.

The one case you could make for Manfredy is that should have been counted and may have been able to recover his wits after receiving the mandatory eight count.

@Dynamicpuncher , taking your suggestion from the Berbick-Snipes thread on Snipes v Washington. Here we go...

    Renaldo Snipes v Lionel Washington

    Round 1: 10-9 Snipes
    Round 2: 10-9 Washington
    Round 3: 10-8 Snipes (scores a knockdown)
Round 4: Snipes drops and stops Washington

Total through 3 completed rounds: 29-27 Snipes

A brief but explosive fight. I read a blurb on boxrec that it was named 1988's 'Most fun fight of the year'. Never heard that award before, but I'll go along with it because it was fun. First time seeing Washington in action. Y'know, he had the boxing fundamentals for such a big man, but he was so robotic in his approach that an athletic, fluid type of heavyweight like Snipes was going to make hay with him in the ring. Also, Washington wasn't the most sturdy as his 11 losses, all by KO will attest. But all that aside, I enjoyed the fight. BTW, that counter right Snipes caught him with to deck him in the 3rd was a beauty.

The Washington fight to watch is against Dokes. Or the Weaver fight but Washington gets blasted in that one.

Tyrell Biggs v Renaldo Snipes (NY rounds scoring)

    Round 1: Biggs
    Round 2: Even
Round 3: Biggs (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: Snipes
    Round 5: Biggs
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Biggs
    Round 8: Snipes
    Round 9: Snipes
    Round 10: Biggs

Total: 5-3-2 Biggs (actual scores: 7-3, 7-3 and a 5-5 score - in NY at the time, if there is an even card the official was allowed to go to a supplemental point system and in this case the official scored it with the extra points as a 6-5 all for Biggs)

This was a fight where the fans got their moneys worth. Snipes just threw caution to the wind and went all out winging everything in his arsenal at Biggs. Staying on the inside with Snipes was a bad move for someone who had height, reach and a terrific jab on Snipes. But then again, we wouldn't have gotten a fight like this.

Well it sure did not take much imagination to think about other opponents in there with Tyrell having success, did it?

Biggs didn't exactly fight smart against the guy and this was not the A#1 Renaldo snipes we are talking about here. I thought it showed major flaws listening and following corner instructions. And it showed a lack of having the ability to think in there. And he also did not show the skills of a finisher when he had the knockdown.

It was supposed to be a fight biggs comes through with flying colors. Sure wasn't that result. But there is so much pressure on these amatures turning pro back then w/ that Duva clan. Pressure changes a lot of things and not every fighter handles it well. And if they don't handle big pressure, hard to get optimal results in the sport of boxing.

    Pressure busts pipes.

    Pressure also creates diamonds.

In boxing, you have to eat pressure for breakfast.

They wanted Briggs to fight more aggressively which I don't understand why, hes 6'5 fighter who should be using his reach and boxing on the outside.

Briggs showed good boxing skills on outside vs Jeff Sims, when he outboxed him with just one arm using the jab after breaking his collar bone.

Even in 1st round vs Tyson he showed good boxing skills winning that round clearly, but then starts exchanging punches too much. He also got himself in trouble vs David Bey doing samething and just about scrapped through.

Briggs for me had alot of potential it's a shame his career didn't pan out.

    Michael Spinks KO7 Yaqui Lopez

Great LHW battle I was kindly recommended on here. Lopez starts really well but Michael is too young and fresh and staggeringly mature for someone with only 15 fights behind him. Lopez was coming off his brutal war with Saad Muhammed so hardly surprising he fades after battering Spinks with body shots. Once Mike weathers the storm his fantastic combinations see him through in an invaluable learning fight for Spinks.

    1. Spinks 9 Lopez 10

I did this one a couple years ago. Sizzling fight! Here’s my account:

Michael Spinks vs. Alvaro “Yaqui” Lopez in a schedule 10-round bout on October 18, 1980, at Atlantic City Convention Center in New Jersey.

Spinks weighs 176 to Lopez’s 178 3/4. Michael (13-0), a 1976 Olympic gold medalist, is fighting for the fifth time in 1980 after taking most of 1979 off due to a knee injury and to help out his more famous brother Leon cope with his ups and downs after beating and losing to Muhammad Ali to briefly hold the world heavyweight title.

Lopez (49-10) is coming off a 14th-round TKO loss to Matthew Saad Muhammad in a thriller in Yaqui’s fourth try for the light heavyweight title.

Spinks is rated No. 4 by Ring Magazine, Lopez No. 6. NBC televises.

Round 1: Lopez 10-9 — Yaqui comes out with a brutal body attack from the start and sets a fast pace.

Round 2: Lopez 10-9 — More of the same as Spinks begins to establish a jackhammer jab but Lopez is finding the mark with combinations.

Round 3: Lopez 10-9 — Most people probably gave this round to Spinks as he rocked Lopez and had him in trouble early, but Yaqui takes the play away as they slug it out for the remainder of the round, landing solid combos and fighting the full three minutes. It’s becoming a war.

Round 4: Spinks 10-9 — Spinks’ jab is the key factor as he takes command, although both land good combinations.

Round 5: Lopez 10-9 — The pace slows a bit and Yaqui does the better work in a less hectic round. Michael complains he’s been thumbed and Lopez has a cut opened over his left eye.

Round 6: Spinks 10-9 — Spinks lands power shots with both hands and has a good round, but Lopez isn’t backing away from the slugfest.

Round 7: Spinks wins by TKO, putting Lopez down with a chopping right early in the round and battering him when he gets up.

My card at the time of the stoppage: Lopez 4-2 using the New Jersey round system in place at the time. Two judges had Spinks up 4-2 and one had it even.

This is the first true test of Spinks’ career. Ever the warrior, Lopez fought with vigor and determination. He throws everything at Michael and seems intent on trying to break him. Spinks weathers it and matches the intensity to put away the grizzled veteran.

If you haven’t seen this one, I suggest you check it out.

@Saintpat @Blofeld this was my scorecard

    Michael Spinks vs Yaqui Lopez

    1 Lopez
    2 Lopez
    3 Lopez
    4 Spinks
    5 Spinks
    6 Spinks
    7 Spinks wins by TKO

    57-57 Even

Fantastic fight this one and a good test for an upcoming Michael Spinks.

Spinks started off with a solid stiff jab, and i think he expected to be able to control the fight with his jab. Well Lopez had other plans and he was able to effectively pressure Spinks. Backing him up towards the ropes and land some terrific combinations and body punches. The pattern continued that way for 2 rounds or so, until Spinks realized just using the jab wasn't going to cut it he was going to have to fight.

The 3rd round is when the fight really broke out as both men started to slug it out, i feel like despite Lopez being competitive in rounds 4 and 5, you could see the momentum was starting to shift in Spinks's favour. And the 6th round is when the fight really started to turn around as Spinks hurt Lopez for the first time in the fight. Going into the 7th round the writing was on the wall Spinks didn't let up from the last round, and finally finished Lopez off after scoring 2 knockdowns in the 7th round.

Overall an underrated little slugfest this one, this was probably the first fight where Spinks was really tested. And he passed it with flying colours as he was ready to take the next step up the ladder, and sadly once again the brave Yaqui Lopez came up short again in a great fight.

    Roberto Duran vs Iran Barkley

Round 1 - Barkley; consistent jabbing and solid body shots, duran almost stole the round with that big right over the jab of barkley at the end, and he also displayed good defense and countering

Round 2 - Barkley; great going with his body shots again, he was also a lot more weary of duran's counters and power, but duran too had his fair share of good blows, also good going downstairs

Round 3 - Duran; I feel like duran finally won himself a round, good right again, good jabs solid bodywork and great round closure

Round 4 - Barkley; both showed some real big shots but I feel like barkley did better overall

Round 5 - Duran; really close, felt like duran's body shots and strong rights did more than barkly's

Round 6 - Duran; duran was really effective this round, still barkley's jab is doing it's job

Round 7- Duran; once again, close round, giving slight edge to the duran, better defense, slipping and rolling

Round 8 - Barkley; duran was stunned hard, almost went down too, by barkley's hook, even still he kept fighting and had a few great shots of his own

Round 9 - Duran; better performances by duran, great combination of defense and offense

Round 10 - Duran; duran really got his shots in this round, even landing a good amount of jabs

Round 11 - Duran (barkley down); such a ****ing performance from duran

Round 12 - Barkley seemed to be better overall

    TOTAL: 115-112 For Duran
