    My score:

Michael Spinks v Yaqui Lopez (NJ rounds basis)

    Round 1: Lopez
    Round 2: Lopez
    Round 3: Lopez
    Round 4: Lopez
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Spinks
Round 7: Spinks drops Lopez twice and the fight is stopped

Total through 6 completed rounds: 4-1-1 Lopez (actual scores: 4-2, 4-2 and 3-3 with Spinks leading)

To begin, an outstanding fight where fortunes changed by the second. I saw things way different than the officials, but then again rounds 3, 4 and 5 could have gone either way and they were terrific rounds. I was simply more impressed with the work-rate of Yaqui. But despite the scores, what a fight!

    Ike Quartey v Carlos Bojorquez

To begin, I am not recommending this fight to anyone! Not unless you enjoy seeing someone hit a heavy bag for 9 rounds. That may be harsh on Bojorquez who never stopped trying, but I am being realistic. I knew nothing of this fight other than the result and thought I'd check it out. I remember Bojorquez from his fight with Pernell Whitaker and this was Quartey's 3rd fight on his comeback after a 5 year layoff, so I thought I'd give it a go and hope for something competitive. See where that got me? I only gave Bojorquez a share of round 2 for a 90-82 score for Ike after 9 rounds before referee Cortez stopped it in the 10th with Bojorquez under steady punishment and scrutiny. Ike looked sharp but maybe lacking a bit in the stamina department. One could see him taking his rests against the ropes where he would counter-punch. It was here that produced the best round and if you wanted to watch any round in particular I would recommend the 5th. Ike laid on the ropes and Bojorquez, who was a clubbing-type puncher wailed away while Ike countered with some of the most sizzling shots. It was actually a good round that I enjoyed. But that was it. Really just one-way traffic, but it gave me the chance to see Ike in action again.

Jorge Arce v Hussein Hussein (flyweight eliminator)

    Round 1: 10-9 Arce
    Round 2: 10-9 Hussein
    Round 3: 10-9 Arce
    Round 4: 10-9 Arce
    Round 5: 10-9 Arce
    Round 6: 10-9 Arce
    Round 7: 10-9 Hussein
Round 8: 10-8 Arce (Hussein docked a point for laying on the back of Arce's head)
    Round 9: 10-9 Arce
Round 10: Arce drops Hussein and Jeff Fenech retires his man

Total through 9 completed rounds: 88-82 Arce (actual scores: 88-82 from all 3 judges)

Man, what a war! Hussein proved plucky amidst Arce's sometimes wildman tactics. But what a warrior Arce was. Both of them. Arce always seemed to end up with that cut on the bridge of his prominent nose, but this one was bad. Trust the warrior to never say die.

I remember watching this fight when I was getting into boxing as a kid, from my memory it was a bloody brutal fight but a bit one sided in favour of Arce.

Arce was always good value for money.

    Jermall Charlo vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko

    1 Derevyanchenko
    2 Charlo
    3 Charlo
    4 Charlo
    5 Derevyanchenko
    6 Derevyanchenko
    7 Charlo
    8 Charlo
    9 Charlo
    10 Derevyanchenko
    11 Derevyanchenko
    12 Derevyanchenko

    114-114 Draw

Very fun fight Charlo controlled the early rounds with a stiffrleft jab, Derevyanchenko cameback in the in the middle rounds with effective aggression landing some good power shots. Charlo once again took command in rounds 7-9 hurting Derevyanchenko with right hands. But once again the momentum shifted in Derevyanchenko's favour as he swept rounds 10-12 with effective aggression and good effective power punches as Charlo faded.

Overall it was a good close competitive fight with a few momentum swings, and no way was it as wide as the judges scored it.

    Sergiy Derevyanchenko vs Daniel Jacobs

    1 Jacobs 10-8 knockdown
    2 Derevyanchenko
    3 Derevyanchenko
    4 Jacobs
    5 Derevyanchenko
    6 Jacobs
    7 Jacobs
    8 Jacobs
    9 Jacobs
    10 Derevyanchenko
    11 Derevyanchenko
    12 Derevyanchenko

    114-113 Jacobs

Another good fight from Derveyanchenko i really enjoyed but i think he came up slightly short in this one. The knockdown in the 1st round was huge and made a big difference in scoring, and Jacobs won too many rounds between 6-9 for Derveyanchenko to make up the difference. The best round of the fight was the 11th round where both men landed alot of good shots a very debatable round.

Overall two judges had it 115-112 for Jacobs which i thought was fine, and another judge had it for Derveyanchenko 114-113. I think the 114-113 card for Derveyanchenko was a tad generous to him. But overall a good fight and Daniel Jacobs impressed me in this fight with his boxing skills and clean punching especially in rounds 6-9. Derveyanchenko as always a brave warrior and always gives 110 percent but he came up short here for me overall.

    Sergiy Derevyanchenko vs Carlos Adames

    1 Adames
    2 Adames
    3 Adames
    4 Adames
    5 Derveyanchenko
    6 Derveyanchenko
    7 Adames
    8 Derevyanchenko
    9 Derveyanchenko
    10 Derveyanchenko

    95-95 Draw

So yes another Derevyanchenko fight i'm rewatching all his controversial decisions.

Adames i felt won too many of the early rounds, he came out as a Southpaw and did very well in the early rounds looking sharp and beating Derevyanchenko to the punch. I felt like after 5th round ? Adames started to tire and his work become more ragged as he wasn't as sharp as he was earlier. Derveyanchenko himself wasn't landing as many clean hard punches as i'm used to seeing him land, but i gave the later rounds to him based on aggression as Adames was clinching more and his work become more ragged.

Overall a decent fight that i wish was 12 rounds, i don't have an issue with Adames winning a close decision. He comfortably won all the early rounds, and there was 1 or 2 closish rounds that maybe Adames could of edged. But i can't see that Adames did any worse than a draw.

    Gennady Golovkin vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko

    1 Golovkin 10-8 knockdown
    2 Golovkin
    3 Derevyanchenko
    4 Derevyanchenko
    5 Derevyanchenko
    6 Derevyanchenko
    7 Golovkin
    8 Golovkin
    9 Derevyanchenko
    10 Derevyanchenko
    11 Golovkin
    12 Golovkin

    114-113 Golovkin

So my last of the Derevyanchenko fights when i watched this fight back then i thought Derevyanchenko nicked it, rewatching it again i thought Golovkin nicked it this time around. Derevyanchenko i think did look better overall in the rounds he won with his effective aggression and combinations, but the knockdown hurt him and Golovkin's late rally was just enough for me.

Overall i do feel for Derevyanchenko he just loses vital rounds at the worst moments, or gets floored and it costs him in really close fights.

A real hard luck fighter, coming out on the losing end of so many of these tight decisions.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas The Hitman Hearns

Round 1 - Hearns; leonard had great movement this round and did really well but I just value hearns' landing more and keeping up while cutting ray's movement

Round 2 - Hearns; first half was similar to the first round with hearns dominating, then the 2nd half was pretty good for both fighters with me personally feeling like hearns had an edge

Round 3 - Hearns; leonard had a few good shots and great movement,as always, but he just can't to enough to convince me that he did better than his rival, doesn't matter what it is hears just always finds a way to land that jab and to get out of leonard's reach or out punch him once it gets tough, also pummeled ray real good towards the end of the round while he was on the ropes

Round 4 - Hearns; leonard tried to win a punching contest against hearns and actually almost succedeed, but hearns was much more consistent in my opinion with leonard wining just mid round

Round 5 - Hearns; leonard didn't do anything major to win this round, and I just need to stop and appreciate how entertaining this round was and this fight as a whole is, even while losing ray has amazing footwork and movement, and he still has the energy to taunt a man that's beating him , and hearns went and answered with his own taunts and made fun of leonard, this is amazing lmao

Round 6 - Leonard; leonard finally did it, this round both of the fighters were rocked and wobbled hard, but I must give this round to sugar ray, he landed a few good shots and rocked hearns, hearns then returned and rocked leonard but after that I think that the exchanges went into leonard's favour, right after hearns wobbled him he returned with two good shots, one to the body and one to the head, and afterwards did good to keep pressure on hearns pummeling him on the ropes towards the end, winning this round in my eyes

Round 7 - Leonard; his punches did great and punished hearns real bad, the most one sided round of the fight

Round 8 - Leonard; you can clearly see that his punches are affecting hearns, slow round, but good stalking and good clean shots

Round 9 - Hearns; hearns kept leonard at range and landed a bunch of good jabs

Round 10 - Hearns; this round was similar to the last one, just with leonard throwing more, never the less hearns has this one

Round 11 - Hearns; hearns lended a lot of great clean shots, leonard has his shots at well but hearns did a lot better

Round 12 - Hearns; not much to say about this one, they traded a lot of punches and hearns came out on top in my books, the end of the round also really got to me, hearns and leonard were mocking, taunting and pushing and hitting eachother after the bell in the first half, but now they traded a respectful fist bump at the end, man I really love boxing

Round 13 - Leonard (hearns down); man what a round, even after that first down or rather "push" through the ropes hearns kept fighting, and that down at the end of the round was really dangerous, that could've ended the fight if the round kept going for another minute

Round 14 - Leonard wins by TKO, maybe an early stoppage, but to be honest he probably would've been KO'D if the fight kept going

The score before 14th; 125 - 121 in favour of Hearns

    Jose Napoles vs Ralph Charles

I hadn't really focused on Napoles before but he really exceeded my expectations. Admittedly Charles was solid but Euro level fighter rather than a world beater but Napoles was such a joy to watch it didn't really matter that he won every round. Staggeringly quick, wonderful snapping jab and creative combinations from all angles. I have heard that he is a text book fighter for anyone wanting to learn the trade and I have to agree.

The thing I liked most was how he positioned himself to punch at all times, whatever the exchange he seemed to be able to find an angle to launch an attack. He was more aggressive than I thought considering what a smooth boxer he was and also seemed to have a very solid chin as Charles could punch.

    1. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    2. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    3. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    4. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    5. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    6. Napoles 10 Ralph Charles 9

    7. Napoles wins KO

    Napoles 60 Charles 54

Junior Witter v Lovemore Ndou (Commonwealth jr. welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Witter
    Round 2: 10-9 Witter
    Round 3: 10-8 Witter (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-8 Witter (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-9 Witter
    Round 6: 10-9 Ndou
    Round 7: 10-9 Witter
    Round 8: 10-9 Ndou
    Round 9: 10-9 Ndou
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Witter
    Round 12: 10-9 Witter

Total: 117-110 Witter (actual scores: 115-111 and 2 scores of 114-112 all for Witter)

Man, this was a weird fight. From the concept of a Commonwealth title fight being staged in L.A. down to the styles of the participants. Also I think I could probably score this fight couple of times over and come up with a different score each time. So, although I had it wider than the judges, I see nothing wrong with their scores. To be clear, Ndou basically threw only haymakers. And Witter, well that's another story. He changes so quickly and steadily throughout from right-handed to southpaw that you have no idea what he actually is. Not a big banger but his counters do come out of nowhere and fast, but with his chin always in the air and hands at his sides you never know when he's going to get caught. One might say that's like a Brendan Ingle fighter. And you'd be right because Ingle was his trainer. So punches were frequent and clean, but which were the most effective from Witter and was the effect from Ndou's haymakers enough to swing a round? A decent enough fight but really stay focused when scoring. So many rounds that rode a fine line, for me anyway.

    Winky Wright vs Jermain Taylor

    1 Taylor
    2 Wright
    3 Taylor
    4 Wright
    5 Wright
    6 Taylor
    7 Taylor
    8 Wright
    9 Wright
    10 Taylor
    11 Wright
    12 Taylor

    114-114 Draw

This is one of my most favourite high paced technical fights ever a very underrated fight this one, and probably one of the most legit draws you'll ever see.

Wright was the slightly busier fighter and landing consistently with his right jab that swelled Taylor's eye, aswell as having good moments when he trapped Taylor on the ropes and went to work. Taylor fought more in bursts but for me landed the harder more eye catching shots, especially the right hand that penetrated Wright's tight guard.

Overall a very fun high paced technical fight worth watching, i haven't seen this fight in over a decade but it was even better than i remember.

That was a real good tough fight. And the rarity---a draw that was the best scoring possible. Usually a draw is the house fighter getting the breaks.

Sure would have liked to have seen more fighters pull their hands back to their proper position like Winky. So many bring them back low and then lift them up to where they are supposed to be. He's the best at it since Ottke.
