    Frank Bruno v Pierre Coetzer

Saw that this fight was out there and wanted to check it out. Bruno against one of the great mustaches that came out of South Africa. Coetzer grew a Wyatt Earp, but he lacked those six-guns. I won't run a card here because Bruno took every round on my card at 70-63 after 7 completed rounds (actual scores: 70-64, and 2 scores of 69-65). I will say though, that Coetzer was in every round and kept each round very close. No walkover rounds here before Bruno stunned Coetzer in the 8th, dropped him and then the Coetzer corner mercifully threw in the towel with the followup. One other thing I noted from Bruno's bout with Carl 'The Truth' Williams was how dirty Bruno fought, which I was amazed at. Well, things weren't much different here. Again, one can't help but note the amount of Bruno's holding and hitting, elbowing, shouldering, hitting on the break and after the bell and low blows with only warnings from ref Roy Francis. Unnecessary form from Bruno.

Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry 1

Great heavyweight brawl! Quarry started very well but was slowly ground down. In fact he looked great in the first round but almost immediately seemed to realise it was suicide to punch with Joe but he didn't seem to have a plan B so stuck with this crazy delusion and was carried out on his shield like a true Irishman!

    1 - Frazier 9 Quarry 10

    2 - Frazier 9 Quarry 10

    3 - Frazier 10 Quarry 9

    4 - Frazier 10 Quarry 9

    5- Frazier 10 Quarry 9

    6 - Frazier 10 Quarry 9

7 - Frazier wins fight stopped

    Frazier 58 Quarry 56

Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry 2

A lesser sequel, time had been significantly kinder to Joe than Jerry who looked out of shape and froze every time Frazier hit him. What is amazing is that Jerry chose to fight Joe exactly the same way as first time trying to match him punch for punch. Made for an entertaining but frankly suicidal fight for Jerry. Joe Louis took an age to stop the fight, you can hear Angelo Dundee screaming for Joe to stop it from the commentary seats.

Features a stunningly hard punch that would have destroyed anyone else in I think the 4th round. Amazingly Jerry stays up before buckling, a tough SOB!

Both fights showcase Smokin' Joe at his very best with an opponent who is tailor made to make him shine.

    1- Frazier 10 Quarry 9

    2- Frazier 10 Quarry 9

    3 - Frazier 9 Quarry 10

    4 - Frazier 10 Quarry 8

    5 - Frazier wins KO5

    Frazier 39 Quarry 36

Frank was always an extremely dirty fighter, especially with rabbit punches. This fight he put his whole illegal tool chest on display.

Yet you hardly ever hear him mentioned as being dirty because (a) people liked him, and (b) for the most part he never beat anyone’s favorite fighter.

How dare you insult one of Britain’s most beloved fighters of all time?! …

…But yes, I remember distinctly watching Bruno in fights when I was still new to the sport and thinking ‘Are you allowed to punch people in the back of the head like that? You must be, because Frank”s allowed to do it’.

I always thought that it came from a nervousness on his part and showed his lack of control of his emotions in a fight rather than from malicious intent - not that the intent actually matters as it’s illegal (and dangerous) whatever the reason.

Guty Espadas v Wethya Sakmuangklang (featherweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 3: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 4: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 5: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 6: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 10: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 11: 10-9 Espadas
    Round 12: 10-9 WS

Total: 119-112 Espadas (actual scores: 118-110, 116-112 and 116-113 all for Espadas)

To begin, I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS FIGHT!! If there is any part of this fight anyone wished to see, I would say start at the 7th round. From 7 onwards it was a decent fight, but those first 6 rounds, nothing happened. I almost aborted after 3 rounds, but kept watching the next round with the hopes of something happening, afterall, this was Guty Espadas, so boring wasn't entering in the equation. I felt something was bound to happen and eventually it did in the second half. I always check out the fighters' records after a fight seeing what they did leading up to and after and the Thai had a remarkable 84 fights with 83 of them taking place in Asia. This fight in Mexico was the only time he stepped out of his continent. Also, it took me a couple of minutes to find him on boxrec because they have his name as Foijan Prawet but fighting under the name Wethya Sakmuangklang. Damn it! That's the name I wanted to fight under.

    Lamon Brewster vs Kali Meehan

    1 Brewster
    2 Meehan
    3 Brewster
    4 Meehan
    5 Meehan
    6 Meehan
    7 Meehan
8 Meehan 10-8 no knockdown but such a dominant round for Meehan
    9 Brewster
    10 Brewster
    11 Brewster
    12 Meehan

    115-112 Meehan

@scartissue i'm not sure if you've ever scored this fight but i thought this was a very bad decision.

This was a bit of a strange performance from Brewster he started off very unusually passive, apparently Meehan and Brewster had sparred together before and Brewster had made note of his right hand. So maybe Brewster was wary of his right hand ? i'm not entirely sure. Meehan himself was also quite passive early but he'd been KO'ed in 30 seconds by Danny Williams, so i think he himself just wanted to warm into the fight.

But anyway after a very strange first 2 rounds where virtually nothing happened, the fight started to pick up a bit in the 3rd round. But again as i said earlier Brewster was far too inactive/passive in this fight, he'd have spurts when he pressured Meehan but nowhere near enough. Meehan for me pretty much controlled the fight through rounds 4 to 9 with his jab and occasional right hand stand that stung Brewster on occasions.

The biggest round in the fight was the 8th round and my god Brewster took an absolute pummelling, like one of the most one sided rounds you'll ever see in a Heavyweight title fight. Brewster got staggered by a right hand at like 1 minute 40 seconds into the round ? and from that point on he took an absolute savage beating along the ropes for the entire duration of the round. I honestly can't see how you cannot score this a 10-8 round, it's probably one of the most legit 10-8 rounds without a knockdown you'll ever see.

But after the huge round from Meehan to Brewster's credit he cameback and had a decent spell between rounds 9-11, in which he able to finally get some effective aggression off after sitting back being too passive for most of the fight.

The fight had definitely got a bit closer at this stage going into the 12th round, but Meehan for me again clearly won the 12th round stinging Brewster with his right hand and doing all the work.

Overall i would say this is a decent fight to watch nothing special, but the 8th round is definitely worth viewing just to witness how brutal of a beating Brewster actually took.

All in all Brewster just didn't do enough and was too passive not getting inside against the big man and really pressuring him, Meehan was able to for the most part to control the fight at distance with his jab and occasional big right hand.

Bad decision though IMO Meehan was a clear winner in book.

    LOL.

Yep, it must have been a nervous tick that caused Frank to involuntarily whack guys in the back of the head repeatedly.

Kind of a Tourette’s of rabbit punching, haha.

Fighting Harada vs Lionel Rose 27th of Feb 1968

During the broadcast of Kambosos vs Lopez in the later rounds when Kambosos looked to be on the verge of victory, Chris Mannix stated that Kambosos was closing in on the biggest win in Australian boxing history. I was watching the fight with my dad, who does not follow boxing these days, and probably never followed super closely. Dad disagreed with Mannix as he thought Lionel Rose beating Harada in Tokyo in 1968 was the biggest victory in Australian boxing history. Must have been a big deal for him to remember. I've been meaning to watch this one since then.

    Round 1: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 2: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 3: Rose 10 - 9 (close)
    Round 4: Harada 10 - 9 (close)
    Round 5: Rose 10 - 9 (close)
Round 6: Harada 10 - 8 (point taken from Rose)
    Round 7: Rose 10 - 9 (close)
    Round 8: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 9: Rose 10 - 8 (KD)
    Round 10: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 11: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 12: Harada 10 - 9 (close)
    Round 13: Rose 10 - 9 (close)
    Round 14: Rose 10 - 9
    Round 15: Harada 10 - 9 (close)
    145 x 138

The story of this fight was Harada trying to get inside but getting countered with left hooks among other things which disrupted Harada's momentum. Excellent performance by Rose.

Raw, loved this fight. Here is my score on the scoring system used at the time.

Fighting Harada v Lionel Rose (5 point must system in effect)

    Round 1: 5-4 Rose
    Round 2: 5-4 Rose
    Round 3: 5-4 Harada
    Round 4: 5-4 Harada
    Round 5: 5-4 Rose
Round 6: 5-3 Harada (I felt Harada had won the round plus the referee penalized Rose a point for what appeared to be hitting with an open glove)
    Round 7: 5-5 Even
    Round 8: 5-4 Rose
    Round 9: 5-3 Rose (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 5-4 Rose
    Round 11: 5-4 Rose
    Round 12: 5-4 Rose
    Round 13: 5-5 Even
    Round 14: 5-4 Rose
    Round 15: 5-4 Rose

Total: 71-64 Rose (official scores by 3 Japanese officials: 72-71, 72-70 and 72-69 all for Rose)

So we had the swarmer (Harada), who was slathering Rose with anything he could muster and whether it landed or not that was his game. However, this fight should be a template in catching that aggressor coming in. Wow! Rose was conservative with his punches for most of the fight but was so precise and pin-point that it was unbelievable for a fighter so young. Just a wonderful performance and an excellent gameplan. Kudos to Rose and his corner for devising and enacting an outstanding strategy against an all-time great bantamweight.

Saw it live and felt Meehan got hosed. Watched it again several years later and my opinion didn't change. I don't have my score handy.

Brewster really took a beating vs Wlad then this fight he took a lot of punishment. His ability to drop Liahovich after the bombs he ate in that fight was incredible

Rodrigo Valdez vs Bennie Briscoe 2

Solid battle with Valdez dominating IMO until the exciting final round where Bennie finally broke through before being stopped with a pearl of a punch. Apart from that brief moment in last round Valdez seemed to handle Briscoe pretty easily. This is the first fight I have seen of Bad Bennie and my first thought is he fought like swarming big puncher without seeming to have a huge punch. He did a lot of fast body punching which narrowly gave him the fourth round but otherwise Rodrigo, who highly impressed me, boxed rings round him and seemed like pretty much the perfect boxer puncher.

Given Briscoe's big reputation and that this is the only time he was ever stopped I am wondering if he was off form for this fight? I need to watch more of his and Valdez's fights, it is a big gap in my knowledge I need to work on!

    1- Valdez 10 Briscoe 9

    2- Valdez 10 Briscoe 9

    3- Valdez 10 Briscoe 9

    4 - Valdez 9 Briscoe 10

    5 - Valdez 10 Briscoe 9

    6 - Valdez 10 Briscoe 9

    7- Valdez wins KO7

    Valdez 59 Briscoe 55

Carlos Monzon vs Rodrigo Valdez I

Kindly recommended by @surfinghb, it lived up to expectations! Classic old school fight, 15 round chess match as Monzon plays a matador to Valdez's rushing bull. To be honest it was not as close as I scored it, I gave Valdez a few early rounds due to activity but Carlos was always more accurate and I feel due to the blurry film I credited a lot of Rodrigo's work that was not landing cleanly. I maybe did the same in a few later rounds and I am not that happy with my scoring overall. Valdez had a huge eighth round and for a few seconds look like he was going to turn it around but sadly (for him) he ran out of steam and Monzon masterfully grappled and held to get through the danger. Valdez did use that round to mount a mid fight charge as Carlos took a breather before he started to pull away again. Valdez expended a huge effort trying to get back into the fight but was reduced to bull rushes of frustration to try and get under Monzon's jab and was quickly tangled up when he got close. I feel 13 and 15 could have gone either way, I think I started to lose a bit of focus at this point, I am too used to scoring 12 rounders! However Carlos stamped his seal on the fight with the knock down in round 14.

I have heard Valdez's brother had been killed before this fight which may have effected his performance, I am interested to compare this to the second fight soon. Whatever the circumstances Monzon put on a clinic in precision punching against a younger and harder punching champion. It is also worth noting how big Monzon looked, he did his trade mark contemptuous push offs which showed how strong he was.

I am also bewildered by how many people seem to find Carlos unimpressive on film. He has a great jab, not just a range finder but a hard dangerous tool. He has a crushing right hand and masterfully uses leverage to extract maximum effect from it. He may not have a huge variety of punches but the ones he has he uses perfectly. He is also one of those rare fighters who always seems to be able to find a position to punch from, racking up points from every part of the ring. He is excellent at keeping his opponent where he wants them and controlling the fight. He can also be surprisingly quick when he wants to be but prefers not to waste punches, a skill maybe lost in fighters who fight 12 rather than 15 rounds.

    1- Monzon 10 Valdez 9

    2 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    3 - Monzon 10 Valdez 9

    4 - Monzon 10 Valdez 9

    5 - Monzon 10 Valdez 10

    6 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    7 - Monzon 10 Valdez 10

    8 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    9 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    10 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    11 - Monzon 10 Valdez 9

    12 - Monzon 10 Valdez 9

    13 - Monzon 10 Valdez 10

    14 - Monzon 10 Valdez 8

    15 - Monzon 9 Valdez 10

    FINAL: Monzon 144 Valdez 143
