Noel, saw this awhile back and loved it. This is what I wrote:

Just watched a great old grudge match. From the mid '80s Mark Kaylor v Errol Christie. Real bad blood between these two that boiled over at a press conference before the fight resulting in a hearing by the BBBC. Don't recall the outcome of the hearing - possibly a fine - but the end result was a great fight. I don't like scoring a fight outside the scoring process being used, so I'm going to assume 10-9 1/2 point margins for winner and loser of a round under British scoring at the time.

Round 1: Even (both fighters score knockdowns)
    Round 2: Christie
Round 3: Christie (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: Kaylor
    Round 5: Kaylor
    Round 6: Kaylor
    Round 7: Christie
Round 8: Kaylor drops Christie, who doesn't make it up in time

    Total (after 7 completed rounds) 68 1/2 - 68 Christie

Despite Christie's slight lead after 7, one can see Kaylor's massive strength in clinches just taking over, although Christie's shots were still dangerous. But Kaylor wasn't fighting in spurts like Errol. He was fighting a steady war. An outstanding fight and the atmosphere had to be electric.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Scartissue it is much appreciated. I have watched this fight several times as i am a huge fan of both fighters. The outcome of the board hearing was that both men were fined £20,000 each,a huge sum at the time.Btw i highly recommend Errol`s autobiography it is a fascinating read

Noel, as a fan of this era clearly, have you ever seen Mark Kaylor against Roy Gumbs or Tom Collins? You'd love it! It's bombs away and they're on youtube.

Can you offer some more insight into Errol’s book?

Yep well it documents his early life as a member of an immigrant family growing up in Coventry,England.Britain at the time was rife with racism especially from the skinhead movement.Errol was forever in scraps and he is brutally honest. Then it follows his highly successful amateur career leading to the inevitable move into the professional code. The Kaylor fight is covered in great detail and he has many great stories to tell.It is honestly one of the very best boxing books i have read and i have read hundreds.Do yourself a favour and buy this book you will not be disappointed.I think it is still available on Amazon

Rafael Ruelas v Jorge Paez (NABF lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-7 Ruelas (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 2: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 3: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 4: 10-9 Paez
    Round 5: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 6: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 7: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 8: 10-8 Ruelas (battering)
    Round 9: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 10: 10-9 Ruelas
Bout stopped between rounds due to a cut on Paez

Total through 10 completed rounds - 99-88 Ruelas (actual scores: 98-90, 97-90 and another 97-90 all for Ruelas)

Man, the officials were a bit more generous to Paez than I was. I only felt Paez took the 4th. But regardless, even though Ruelas ran roughshod over Paez with his assortment of jarring hooks and uppercuts, Paez still had his own unique way of entertaining, although only in spurts. Very rare to find a dull Paez bout.

A really fun fight, I love that one. Nothing against Kaylor, but I loved the Drayton fight too. Nice to see a guy like Buster have a big moment like that.

They were an interesting kettle of fish, those Ruelas brothers. Gabe, I thought, was the more accomplished by some measure. He was so much better defensively, better tactician, all of it. Rafael had better power but his balance was shoddy and his defense was his offense. Still very entertaining though.

I watched this one last year i remember the first few rounds were amazing and then the fight went kind of dull towards the end.

    Jorge Paez vs. Rafael Ruelas

    1 Ruelas 10-7 2 knockdowns
    2 Paez
    3 Ruelas
    4 Paez
    5 Ruelas
    6 Ruelas
    7 Ruelas
    8 Ruelas
    9 Ruelas
    10 Ruelas
11 Paez doesn't come out for the 11th round doctor stops the fight, Paez nose is badly bleeding probably broken ?

    98-90 Ruelas

This fight was kind of strange the first 5 rounds are probably some of the most exciting 5 rounds you will ever see. Paez was floored twice in the 1st round but rallied back in the 2nd round as the two men engaged in an amazing slugfest. Paez had Ruelas badly hurt in the 4th round and seemed to be somewhat close to stopping him. But Ruelas to his credit came out for the 5th round with a non stop punching barrage, Ruelas must of thrown well over 100 punches in that round it was an amazing display of workrate from him.

After those amazing 5 rounds the fight took quite a dip quality wise, not to say it was a bad fight after 5th round. But it was certainly nowhere near the excitement that the first 5 rounds brought, i think the 5th round kinda broke Paez's spirit a bit as he seemed to go into a bit of a defensive shell after that as the fight became more one sided.

The 10th round was a very punishing round for Paez up against the ropes eating uppercuts. As his nose was starting to look a mess as the blood poured out of both nostrils. I would say it was more than likely broken and i think it was a good call not to send Paez out for the 11th round.

Overall it was a good fight the first 5 rounds were amazing. After that it became a bit one sided as Paez became a bit defensive not willing to engage much. But the fight is definitely worth watching for the first 5 rounds alone.

My take: Gabe was a natural boxer, a natural fighter. He was gifted and very instinctual. Rafael was better built for it (with his length and range) but was not a natural — he was the very epitome to me of a ‘taught fighter’ who was drilled in the gym and coached and coached to do certain things but it never became instinct to him … if thy trained him to throw a 1-2-1, he’d go out and throw it all day … but not naturally adjust if the other guy started countering (but would do whatever adjustments his corner instructed when he got back at the end of the round because he was very coachable).

    Tim Tszyu vs Brian Mendoza

    1 Mendoza
    2 Tszyu
    3 Mendoza
    4 Mendoza
    5 Tszyu
    6 Mendoza
    7 Tszyu
    8 Tszyu
    9 Tszyu
    10 Tszyu
    11 Tszyu
    12 Mendoza

    115-113 Tszyu

I think Tszyu looked different class when he opened up and power difference was very apparent in the 2nd half of the fight, but Tszyu didn't do much in the first 4 rounds and coasted the 12th round which made it somewhat of a close fight.

I would say looking at the fight overall Tszyu certainly appeared to win the fight quite clearly, and he was the only fighter doing real damage with his punches. But as i said i feel Mendoza did out hustle Tszyu in a few of the early rounds when Tszyu wasn't do a whole lot making it a fairly close fight but still no doubt Tszyu won it.

Rafael Ruelas v Billy Schwer (lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Schwer
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 4: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 5: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 6: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 7: 10-9 Ruelas
    Round 8: 10-9 Ruelas
Billy is retired between the 8th and 9th with a myriad of cuts

Total through 8 completed rounds: 79-74 Ruelas (actual scores: 79-73, 77-75 and another 77-75 all for Ruelas)

Wanted to check out another Rafael Ruelas fight and I alighted on his title defense against England's Billy Schwer. Billy really exposed how much of a slow starter Rafael was, which probably drew the template for DeLaHoya's people in their unification fight. But when Rafael got the engine going he was a handful. Those right hands started firing like lasers as Billy's eyes busted open. He was a mess with cuts on both eyes before he was pulled out between the 8th and 9th round. I had to laugh when Dave Bontempo - commenting at ringside - said Billy's corner - who were doing their best with the cuts - sounded like Monty Python when the doctor came to the corner. "Doc, it's just a flesh wound!"
