A great fight that while not Foreman-Lyle was a very good watch.

Round 1 10-8 Snipes, Berbick down
ROund 2 10-9 Berbick, Snipes almost down
    Round 3, 10-9 Snipes
    Round 4, 10-9 Berbick
    Round 5 10-9 Snipes
    Round 6 10-9 Snipes
    Round 7 10-9 Berbick
    Round 8 10-9 Snipes
    Round 9 10-9 Berbick
    Round 19 10-9 Berbick
    My total was 95-94 Snipes

Two of the cards were too wide, only the referee (!) got it right!

    Berbick - Snipes

Round 1: Snipes (scored a knockdown)
    Round 2: Berbick
    Round 3: Snipes
    Round 4: Berbick
    Round 5: Even
    Round 6: Berbick
    Round 7: Berbick
    Round 8: Snipes
    Round 9: Even
    Round 10: Berbick

    5-3-2 Berbick

Antonio, I've scored this fight twice and both times I had Berbick ahead. I am in the minority I believe, but it was close. It got a little sloppy as they tired, especially in the 9th and 10th. Incidentally, this is why I score fights on the system used at the time, which was New Jersey's rounds basis. Your score, if you were a ringside judge at the time would have been 5-5. However NY and NJ allowed a supplemental point system in the event that the judge scored it a draw (it could only be applied if it was an even score). So you would have been able to apply an extra point for the knockdown to Snipe's score, like Arthur Mercante did who also had it 5-5, and still end up with a winning score for Snipes. You should check out Snipes v Coetzee. Talk about a cluster-f*** with the points in that one.

I like to use the system in place at the time except with the previous British fractional system, which I don’t completely understand.

    I somehow end up with 95 7/8ths to 94 11/5ths or something.

    Roberto Duran v Kirkland Laing

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Duran
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Laing
    Round 5: 10-9 Laing
    Round 6: 10-9 Duran
    Round 7: 10-9 Laing
    Round 8: 10-9 Laing
    Round 9: 10-9 Laing
    Round 10: 10-9 Laing

Total: 98-94 Laing (actual scores: 96-95 Duran and two scores of 96-94 for Laing for a split win for Kirk)

This is actually the first time I've watched this fight. I remember the Benitez fight live and then when i read about this I said to myself, 'That's it, he should retire.' Who could see the Moore, Barkley, Hagler fights in the distance? I sure couldn't. I remember Duran's excuse for this fight also. "Too much whiskey!" he said. But taking nothing from Kirk, he fought a great fight and in this business, you take advantage of everything that's put in front of you.

    Mike McCallum vs Michael Watson

    1 McCallum
    2 McCallum
    3 Watson
    4 Watson
    5 McCallum
    6 Watson
    7 Watson
    8 McCallum
    9 McCallum
    10 McCallum
    11 McCallum wins by KO

    96-94 McCallum

I have to say this fight was alot more competitive than i remember, i always remembered it as Watson being brave but McCallum mostly dominating but that wasn't quite the case. Watson was able to win his fair share of rounds on pure effort alone he tried so hard in this fight, the problem was Watson seemed like he was giving it every ounce to stay with McCallum. Where as McCallum was totally relaxed and going about his business.

Surprisingly i did have Watson ahead after 7 rounds but McCallum never looked in trouble or that he was going to lose, McCallum's skill level was just a level above Watson and his class was just a bit too much overall too smooth too clever.

Watson took some hellacious shots in this fight i was actually wincing at some of the body shots he took, he showed tremendous heart and a great chin until finally his body gave out in the 11th round. But my goodness the amount of punches Watson took in the 11th ? McCallum literally had to nail him to the floor i give Watson alot of credit for the bravery he showed.

Overall a good high paced technical fight with plenty of skills on display from McCallum and plenty of heart and desire from Watson.

Finally one judge had it the same as me 96-94 the other judge had it 97-93 which is also a reasonable score but 99-91 ? i thought that was very harsh on Watson TBH.

Cornelius Boza-Edwards v Bobby Chacon I (jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Chacon
    Round 2: 10-9 Boza
    Round 3: 10-9 Chacon
    Round 4: 10-9 Chacon
    Round 5: 10-9 Boza
    Round 6: 10-9 Boza
    Round 7: 10-9 Boza
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Chacon
    Round 10: 10-9 Boza
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-9 Boza
    Round 13: 10-9 Boza
Bout stopped by Chacon's corner between rounds 13 and 14

    Total through 13 completed rounds: 126-123 Boza-Edwards (actual scores: 124-123, 127-120 and 128-120 all for Boza-Edwards)

I haven't watched this bout since seeing it live in '81. And that's a shame on my part because this fight gets overshadowed by their rematch, but it's a war in it's own right and should not be neglected. I enjoyed every moment of it. Between Chacon bombing from the outside with that lead right and Boza - with endless stamina and a rock jaw - waging war and outlasting Bobby. Bobby was coming apart with facial damage and the bout was rightly stopped when it was. But an excellent fight.

I don't think that there was a clear Watson round all fight. There are rounds that you can give him, but McCallum has an argument for winning each of those too. 99-91 is as feasible as 96-94 to me.

McCallum should have lost a point for those shots after the bell in the eighth. That was twice in three rounds.
