Sal, I checked this out a couple of years back. I too felt the judges were a bit generous to Joey. This is what I wrote:

Every so often I like digging out an old Gilette fight from their archives. Today I watched the Joey Giambra 10 rounder against Yama Bahama. The fight started out immediately with a clinch and I didn't think this boded well. The first 5 rounds were rife with clinches but they did eventually get into some good exchanges. Rounds 8, 9 & 10 were the best for action. However, Giambra just couldn't get past that speedy jab of Yama's. Even when he fell into a clinch with Joey, he at least jabbed his way into the clinch. Joey's jab was harder but slower and there were times when Yama would rip loose with sharp combos. Late in the fight Joey turned it on but Yama's speedy jabs and combos took it. No need to run a card here. Official scores were 6-3-1 (twice) and 5-4-1 all for Bahama. I was not so gracious to Joey. I scored the 4th even and only gave Joey the 10th for an 8-1-1 for Bahama. I feel the officials were very generous to Joey, but at least the deserving fighter got it.

I get the impression from his reputation that there's of course far more to Giambra than I saw in this one. I'll have to see more.

Sal, a few years back, Joey's fight with Joe DeNucci was uploaded (which I watched), but now I see that it's gone. The fights I see out there are generally at the end of Joey's career, so it's hard to really ascertain what he had in the tank in his prime. I see a lot of good flashes from his fight with Florentino Fernandez, which had to have been a big upset back in the day, but it's an incomplete video. still, the 7th round is intact in that fight and Joey wasn't going to let him off the hook. Floro was a bleeding mess in that one. I can imagine if we saw a fight in its entirety of him with Rory Calhoun or Joey Giardello that we would get a better grasp.

Florentino Fernandez is one of those guys whose name I had come across over the years but only recently really ‘discovered’ as far as taking time to look at him on film. Some of his fights are highlights or snippets, but there’s enough to get a real appreciation for him. Probably deserves more recognition than he gets.

Love his fight with Ortega. I think they might have had two, but can't remember which one I saw

I believe it’s the second one that’s out there. I also saw Floro’s fights with Rory Calhoun, Jose Gonzalez and Stefan Redl. I don’t believe the Calhoun fight is up anymore but what I most recall in seeing the Redl fight is a young Lou Duva in Redl’s corner and him griping at the referee for stopping the fight. Some things never change.

Did Duva have that flap of turkey neck that always flopped around as he floridly screamed at the referee?

Lol! It’s been awhile since I saw it but as near as I can remember he looked the same only with black hair.

Haven’t looked lately but I’m near certain that it was the second Floro-Gaspar fight I saw maybe a year ago. Pretty sure I came across it looking for an Ortega fight I hadn’t seen (another underappreciated warrior) and that’s when I decided I needed to see more of Floro.

    Mikaela Mayer vs Alicia Baumgardner

    Rounds Won/Even
    Mayer - 3,4,5,6,9,10
    Baumgardner - 1,2,7,8
    Even - /

    Notes
    - I scored it 6-4 (96-94) for Mayer.

    Scorecard
    (M)96 - 94(B)
    Winner: Mayer
    Actual Winner Baumgardner via SD

    Review
A good unification scrap between two top-level fighters. Baumgardner started fast with sharp counters & speedy combos, but Mayer started to turn the tide with her excellent jab, volume & ring generalship. I feel she outworked Baumgardner & got the better in most of the exchanges. I only agreed with one of the judges scorecards, the only difference is I had it slightly closer (he had it 97-93 Mayer). A close, competitive fight which Mayer deserved the nod in.

    Yuh-De Jesus II
    Great fight!
    I had Caguitas by 116-112
He was beating Yuh in round 2 but Yuh landed a punch that dropped Caguitas but wasnt counted as a knockdown but based on that i gave Yuh that round 10-9, and also the 6th, 10th and 11th.

For some reason the video is not available here even though its a You Tube video...

Yuh is great value. His first fight with Demarco is amazing. Both deserved medals.

I have most of his title defences. His best showing is probably Oh Kon Son.
