Tackie should be on everyone’s watch list. Tougher than a 10-penny nail driven through a $2 steak.

That's a great analogy. And quite apt.

    Robert Garcia v Ben Tackie

    Round 1: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 2: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 3: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 4: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 5: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 6: 10-9 Tackie
    Round 7: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 8: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 9: 10-8 Tackie (scores a knockdown)
Round 10: Tackie drops and stops Garcia

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-83 Garcia (actual scores: all 3 judges had it 87-83 with Garcia leading)

Guys, I wouldn't steer you wrong. Oh, man, this was awesome and proof that a fight doesn't have to have the tag 'world title' on it to be good or great. This was just one awesome 10 rounder and Garcia fought a masterpiece through the first 5 rounds. Indeed, he looked like a hard-punching Willie Pep in there. But Tackie was dogged and never gave up and the tiring and hurt Garcia started giving ground very late until the final punch took the last of his resolve. Guys, you'll love it!

I remember Ricky Hatton saying he found it impossible to hurt him and that even when he was unloading his hardest punches, Tackie was mocking him and calling him a pu55y (that’s the best way I can write it on here - I’ll leave it to you to decipher that code).

Yeah, it is a bit of an odd insult but apparently Ricky was quite shocked by it!

Have a look at Tackie fight vs Edwin Santana if you have a bit of time.

Dorrian, checked this out today on your recommendation and totally loved it.

Yuri Arbachakov v Muangchai Kittikasem (flyweight title)

Round 1: 10-9 Yuri (Yuri scores a knockdown but it is deemed after the bell, so no KD)
    Round 2: 10-9 Yuri
Round 3: 10-9 Yuri (both fighters score knockdowns but Yuri carries most of the freight this round)
    Round 4: 10-9 Yuri
    Round 5: 10-9 Yuri
    Round 6: 10-9 Yuri
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: Yuri KOs MK

Total through 7 completed rounds: 70-64 Arbachakov (actual scores: 69-64, 68-65 and 67-65 all for Yuri)

There were a couple of more very close rounds, which came close to being scored Even on my card, but Yuri would always pull something big enough out of his hat to sway the round for him on my card. Yuri was phenomenal here and that overhand right was really finding a home on MK's jaw. Terrific fight.

Fred, I checked out the Ledon and Gainer fights today. I liked the Ledon fight, but the Gainer fight, which you heard was entertaining, wasn't. Here's how I saw them:

Robert Garcia v Ramon Ledon (jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Ledon
    Round 2: 10-8 Ledon (scores a knockdown)
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-8 Garcia (scores a knockdown)
Round 5: Garcia stops Ledon after dropping him twice)

Total through 4 completed rounds: 38-37 Ledon (actual scores: 38-36 Ledon and 2 scores of 37-37)

Ledon only had about 14 fights at this time and despite what was probably an excellent amateur career, I'm sure he could have used more seasoning in the pros because he did have talent. But this is what happens when they're rushed and then lose heart after a loss. Because he only had one more fight and then quit. But this was a good fight and about the 3rd Garcia realized the effect he had with a lead right on the southpaw Cuban and it was Garcia from there on. Good fight.

    Robert Garcia v Derrick Gainer

    Round 1: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 2: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 3: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Gainer
    Round 6: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 7: 10-9 Gainer
    Round 8: 10-8 Gainer (scores a knockdown)
    Round 9: 10-9 Garcia
    Round 10: 10-9 Garcia

Total: 96-94 Garcia (actual scores: 96-93 and 2 scores of 95-94 all for Garcia)

The only interesting aspects of this fight was the 7th round and the continuing dialogue between Gil Clancy, Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant on how much Larry hated Gainer and his style. I couldn't agree more and loved their take on how Teddy Brenner would go to the corner of a MSG bout and tell the corner that if your guy doesn't pick it up and make a fight of it that he wouldn't be asked back. Gainer ran and grappled mostly for the 10 rounds with an occasional spurt here and there. Harold Lederman somehow leaned towards Gainer by a score of 96-93, so there were definitely differing opinions. However, one opinion that doesn't differ, was that it was a stinker with Garcia chasing for 10 rounds.

Sorry about the Gainer fight but glad you like the Ledon fight. Apart from the 1st Kelly fight I never really liked Gainer, Garcia on the other hand seemed to always in good fights. Shame he lost the Tackie fight, he had the talent to possibly bag another title. Talking about Tackie I just remember his fight with vicious punching Teddy Reid was another pulsating brawl.

I think my schedule may allow me to indulge my classic fight watch interest again sometime over the next few weeks. I find myself wondering what Jesse James Hughes fights are on the YouTube or otherwise available.

Hate that his career got cut so tragically short. I think he would have gotten a title shot, and while he wasn’t quite that class one wonders if he didn’t have one more miracle in him by hanging tough and coming on strong late.

I was a big fan of Jesse James too. I remember reading about him in the Uk and then in KO magazine (or something similar). His fights with Adrian Stone and Anthony Stephens were classics. I enjoyed his win over Nick Rupa in his last fight before his death.

Sad thing is Rupa ended up getting a title shot against Norris.

Would have loved Hughes to have got it, probably would have lost but who knows if he could survive those early rounds. Norris did get koed in 1997 by unheralded Keith Mullings. Mullings would only win one fight after Norris before losing 4 straight and retiring.

There’s probably not a champ at that time Hughes would be favored over.

But I’m not sure there’s any you could completely count him out against either. If he survived the early rounds he was made of steel as fights progressed.

IIRC there was talk about a PPV (not for a title) being discussed for Hughes vs. Yori Boy Campas. I’d have payed for that without question.
