Witherspoon was able to buzz Mercer a few times and noticeably hurt him with right hands even more so than Lewis did IMO.

Mercer was not winning the battle on the inside exchanging punches with Witherspoon so he was forced to box and jab.

The Witherspoon who fought Mercer vs the Lewis who fought Mercer would've been a dangerous fight for a Lewis who was still rebuilding his career. Witherspoon had a very dangerous over hand right which Lewis could be vulnerable to.

Francesco Damiani v Ray Mercer (Heavyweight strap)

    Round 1: 10-9 Mercer
    Round 2: 10-9 Damiani
    Round 3: 10-9 Damiani
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Damiani
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Damiani
    Round 8: 10-9 Damiani
    Round 9: Mercer KOs Damiani

Total through 8 completed rounds: 79-75 Damiani (actual scores: 78-74, 79-74 and 79-73 all for Damiani)

For a guy that certainly didn't look like a fighter with his fleshy build, Damiani was really fighting a mini-masterpiece here. I even felt a twinge of guilt scoring the 6th even, because he really was controlling this fight. In the 8th, Mercer simply looked gassed and a man bereft of any more ideas. I hate to use the term lucky punch, but he was damn lucky that he caught the Italian on the point of the nose to end the fight. Because he was well on his way to being outpointed. A fast-moving fight which was over before I knew it.

Scar a few things you may not know about this fight and this was on a podcast with Sammy the Bull Gravano.

Damiani was being backed by the mafia and they were trying to build him up for a big money fight vs Tyson down the road. They were actually going to approach Mercer and ask him to throw the fight, but in the end they thought Damiani would win the fight with ease so they didn't feel the need to do so.

McCall vs Damiani is out there on YouTube as well. Though I've never seen it only the ending.

Shoutout to @AntonioMartin1 — hope I’m not stepping on your toes, but you got me in the mood for some more Bazooka.

Wilfredo Gomez (c) vs. Ruben Valdez, scheduled for 15 for the WBC super bantamweight championship on Feb. 3, 1980, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

This took place on the undercard of Larry Holmes’ heavyweight title defense vs. Lorenzo Zanon.

Gomez is 27-0-1 with 27 straight KO victories and making his 11th defense of the crown (all successful and all by stoppage, of course). He weighs 122 on the second try and is 23 years old.

Valdez is 45-5-1 and scales 121 3/4. The Colombian is 25 and ranked No. 2 by the WBC, having won nine of his last 10 outings.

1 — Gomez 10-9: Wilfredo peppers and probes. Valdez throws little, missing with a few wide left hooks, and finally lands a couple jabs in the final 30 seconds or he’d have been shutout.

2 — Gomez 10-8: To me this is a classic two-point round without a knockdown. Gomez hurts Valdez mid-round with a right and rakes him over with a body-and-head attack, working up and down. Valdez, fighting from a crouch, basically lands nothing of note.

3 — Gomez 10-9: Wilfred puts on a clinic. He throws double rights and double right uppercuts … at one point he even throws three consecutive uppercuts (landing the first two). He can’t miss. Valdez opens up a bit but still doesn’t land much.

4 — Gomez 10-9: This is looking like a sparring match. Wilfredo works angles and upper body movement beautifully, leaning to either side to shift his attack, and sinking some nasty body shots. Splendid combinations.

5 — Gomez 10-9: Bazooka picks it up a couple times with some heavy artillery but Valdez does land one nice right hand when he turns Gomez on the ropes. But that’s about it.

6 — Gomez 10-8: Wilfredo batters him, unloading heavy rights and hooks, busting open Valdez’s mouth and drawing blood. Ruben does try to fire back a few times but nothing doing.

Fight is halted after the sixth round on recommendation of the ringside doctor. Good call. This had the looks of a real beating from the start and it was getting ugly.

    My card: 60-52. Official cards: 60-54, 60-53 and 60-52.

That’s about all there is to say, except this is a very smooth and encyclopedic performance from Wilfredo, who shows a bit of everything. if you want a competitive fight, look elsewhere, but it is a clinic of a legendary champ at the height of his powers.

Watched one fight today that was so good I had to immediately watch the rematch that was also outstanding. Here we gooooo......

Loris Stecca v Victor Callejas I (super bantamweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Callejas
    Round 3: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 4: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 5: 10-9 Callejas
    Round 6: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 7: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 8: Callejas KOs Stecca

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-66 Stecca (actual scores: 69-65, 68-66 and 68-67 all for Callejas)

Let me begin by saying I saw Stecca's title-winning fight against Leo Cruz and thought it was a fantastic fight. I never saw Callejas fight but heard he simply bludgeoned Stecca, which amazed me having seen the Cruz fight. Well, don't you believe it, baby. This fight was competitive and outstanding and despite the scores, I had Stecca ahead. It was like the Ocasio-Odhiambo fight which I recently scored. And by that I mean, when you have a Puerto Rican fighting in Puerto Rico with all heavily-laden WBA officials, you'd better score a KO because you're not leaving with a title. In regards to Callejas, he really didn't deserve this title shot. His record is bereft of talent. The only recognizable name on his record was Bernardo Checa, whose claim to fame was being Barry McGuigan's sparring partner and later became a good trainer. But one thing Callejas could do, was hit. And in a give and take fight, he caught Stecca in the 8th where the ref counted him out. But I've got to give an unbelievable amount of credit to Stecca for the fight that he put up. An incredible fight.

Victor Callejas v Loris Stecca II (super bantamweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Callejas
    Round 2: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 3: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 4: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 5: 10-9 Stecca
    Round 6: 10-7 Callejas (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Stecca is retired between rounds

Total through 6 completed rounds: 56-56 Even (actual scores: 57-56, 58-57 and 58-55 all for Callejas)

The rematch took place in Italy and again, I thought Stecca put up one of the greatest fights. He really was a defiant little b****** the way he would mock a monster banger like Callejas at the end of each round. The second knockdown that Callejas scored in the 6th was one to behold. He literally launched Stecca into the air. Amazing that he beat the count but at least his corner was looking out for him between rounds.

Guys, I can't recommend these two fights enough. You'll love them.

Thanks! Saw the fight for the first time since I was 12!

It was a very close fight, many rounds were close. For what its worth, I had Ocasio ahead 134-132. Odhiambo, my dad told me 40 years ago, was tired, thats why Ocasio knocked him out. This still holds true. Odhiambo dominated the first part of the fight but the Guaynabo heat seems to have gotten to him. Remember, he lives in Denmark...

    Good fight..

Those fights are really good, totally agree. Callejas reminds me a bit of Lora, who is sort of a Gomez lite.

    Just bringing it full-circle here......
