Thanks for sharing all the background! I think that a lot of boxing fans root for fighters from their own country (or ethnicity) but I also think true fans appreciate and admire fighters from all over based on their style, skill, personality, etc. And in a rivalry as intense as Puerto Rico-Mexico in the ring, there’s also bound to be some respect (even if grudging in some cases).

Great fight! Both showed tons of courage!

See how Bruno was out on his feet at the end of round one?

I was married to a woman who was half Irish and half Puerto Rican from Brooklyn, whose family moved eventually to Marathon, Florida when she was 12. Basically I married the product of West Side Story. But I loved her Puerto Rican relatives, and wish we'd gotten to PR before she divorced me last year.

Besides the three kids of course, the marriage also yielded my ex's family recipe for pork pernil, which is something I still crave and might make here in the next day or two, now that I think about it. Absolutely delicious.

Sharks vs Jets, Yankees vs Red Sox, Army vs Navy and Mexico vs Puerto Rico boxing all have arguments as best rivalry.

I’ll add Alabama-Auburn and Ohio State-Michigan to the list from the college ranks.

That period of Magic vs Bird for Lakers-Celtics was so intense. Both teams starting at each other from across the country all season and all through the playoffs, figuring (mostly correctly) that the other would be waiting for them at the end.

I got to go to PR back in the early 1990s I think it was for a college basketball tournament. All I really saw of it was the San Juan casino/tourist district, Old San Juan and Bayamon (where the games were played) … plus whatever we could see on the drive over.

The weather was lovely. I wish I had been able to have access to a rental car so I could have found a boxing gym or two.

Ahh...the first 11 years of my life, I grew up in Bayamon..

Not far from the place where the basketball games were held at, if they were held at the Bayamon coliseum, in fact!

    Wonderful place!

I checked this fight out today but actually thought it was mismarked because Koki Ishii looked to me to be a Latin American fighter, but it turned out to be legit. Here we go....

Chul Ho Kim v Koki Ishii (super flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Kim
    Round 2: 10-9 Kim
    Round 3: 10-8 Ishii (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 Kim
    Round 5: 10-9 Kim
    Round 6: 10-8 Kim (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-8 Kim (scores a knockdown)
Round 8: Kim drops and stops Ishii

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-62 Kim (actual scores: 68-61, 68-63 and 70-62 all with Kim leading)

Let me tell you, wow! These two set an incredible pace with hard, clean shots galore. Although Kim was leading, Ishii was finding success at time with a counter right, which dropped and stunned Kim at various times of the fight. An absolute terrific fight. BTW, Koki Ishii should not be confused with Kozo Ishii, who fought Nestor Garza to - what should have been - fight of the year. But all that aside, great fight.

They were at American University of Puerto Rico.

Pretty sure we passed by Estadio Roberto Clemente on our treks back and forth.

As for Puerto Rican food, which came up earlier in this conversation, I don’t really have any specific memories except me and a buddy walking around looking for an American-style place on Thanksgiving day in hopes of finding a traditional turkey lunch and happening upon a bar/restauruant that had kind of an Irish pub theme (I can’t recall the name) and being surprised that they had an entire Thanksgiving buffet laid out, haha.

We did eat local food, just can’t recall anything specific.
