Verno Phillips v Julian Jackson (some crap version of the jr. middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 2: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 3: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 4: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 8: 10-9 Phillips
    Round 9: Phillips KOs Jackson

Total through 8 completed rounds: 79-75 Phillips (actual scores: 79-73, 78-74 and another 78-74 all for Phillips)

This was a pretty decent fight, albeit against a jaded Jackson. I've enjoyed several of Phillips' fights and this was no different. He doesn't have a big punch (despite the one-punch KO) so he throws a robust blizzard of punches much like Gaspar Ortega would. It's always a sorry state to see a great fighter like Jackson on his last legs but he really produced a Herculean effort in rounds 4, 5 and 6 to try to turn the fight around. Alas, to no avail. Still, a good fight.

Nice reference likening him to Gaspar Ortega.

I could watch Ortega fight all day.

Carmen Basilio v Tony DeMarco II (welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 DeMarco
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 4: 10-9 DeMarco
    Round 5: 10-9 DeMarco
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 DeMarco
    Round 8: 10-9 DeMarco
    Round 9: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 10: 10-9 Basilio
    Round 11: 10-9 Basilio
Round 12: Basilio drops DeMarco twice and the fight is stopped

Total through 11 completed rounds: 106-105 DeMarco (actual scores: 106-103, 106-103 and 104-97 all with DeMarco leading)

Great fight and good quality in this film. The 7th round was something because it was about as close a fighter could go down without going down. In this case Basilio. However, those long hard shots DeMarco was flinging really gassed him which was evident in the 11th. Of course, Carmen's shots weren't helping as he was absolutely persistent throughout. Great fight.

Sandy Saddler vs Flash Elorde II (Jan 18, 1956)

    Rd 1: 9-10 Flash
    Rd 2: 10-9 Saddler
    Rd 3: 9-10 Flash
    Rd 4: 9-10 Flash
    Rd 5: 10-9 Saddler
    Rd 6: 9-10 Flash
    Rd 7: 10-9 Saddler
    Rd 8: 9-10 Flash
    Rd 9: 10-10 even
    Rd 10: 10-9 Saddler
    Rd 11: 10-9 Saddler
    Rd 12: 10-9 Saddler
Rd 13: Saddler wins via doctor stoppage
    My scorecard after 12 completed rounds : 114 - 113 Saddler

Not much action throughout the first five rounds. Biggest success for Flash came in rounds 6 & 8. He especially stood out in round 8 in which he unleashed some vicious combinations and badly beat up Saddler (even managed to knock off his mouthpiece). In round 7 Saddler opened a cut above Flash's left eye which has gotten progressively worse as the fight went on and the fight was stopped in rounds 11 & 12 for doctor's assessment. Saddler dominated the last rounds. He successfully targeted Flash's compromised left eye and overall looked fresher than his opponent. Solid fight.

Paul Ingle v Junior Jones (Featherweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Jones
    Round 2: 10-9 Ingle
    Round 3: 10-9 Ingle
    Round 4: 10-9 Jones
    Round 5: 10-9 Ingle
    Round 6: 10-9 Ingle
    Round 7: 10-9 Jones
    Round 8: 10-9 Jones
    Round 9: 10-8 Jones (scores a knockdown)
    Round 10: 10-9 Ingle
Round 11: Jones receives a standing count before the bout is stopped on Ingle's followup attack

Total through 10 completed rounds: 95-94 Jones (actual score: 95-94 Jones, 95-94 and 96-93 both for Ingle)

Even though I had Jones slightly ahead, there is no time during the fight did I think he was in charge. If he was leading, it was tenuous at best. He always appeared fragile. Ingle was dogged and showed what someone can do when they come into a fight in shape, determined and ready to go. When he caught Jones in the 11th - although not having dropped him - Jones was done, legless and looked like a Saturday night drunk running from lamp post to lamp post. I didn't watch this on the best quality of film and some of these rounds really required good quality as they were close. I would imagine I may have a different score if watching again, but it is what it is. Great win for Ingle.

Alexis Arguello vs. Cornelius Boza Edwards (Aug 9, 1980)

    Rd 1: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 2: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 3: 9-10 Boza Edwards
    Rd 4: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 5: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 6: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 7: 10-9 Arguello
    Rd 8: 10-9 Arguello
Boza Edwards doesn't come out for round 9.
My scorecard after 8 completed rounds: 79-73 Arguello

Masterclass performance by Arguello who was in control for the entirety of the fight. He counterpunched wonderfully, displayed great distance management and landed at will with his straight right hand. He also frustrated Boza Edwards with his excellent head movement (brilliant sequence from Arguello in round 5). I give Boza Edwards credit, he showed no fear against his legendary opponent, but he failed to land anything of significance and was simply outclassed.

Archie Moore v Jimmy Slade (Midwest's 10 point split)

I won't run a card here as I only gave Slade the 10th round when he really turned up the heat. The Midwest at this time would split a possible 10 points. So, if a fighter won a round the score would be 6-4. An Even round would be 5-5. So my score was 58-42 for Moore (actual scores: 56-44, 55-45 and another 55-45 all for Moore). I won't doubt the judges as some of the earlier rounds were very close. Slade was a nice fighter who would duck, dodge, roll on the ropes, etc. His counters were also very tidy. He was a fighter who should really have tried to stay at light heavy as he was only about 180. But these fighters went where the money was. Archie for his part was so cool. He almost looked like he was treating it as a sparring session. Love these old time fights.

Jimmy Slade was classy fighter in an era full of classy and great fighters like Archie Moore. Slade was coming off a 4th round destruction of Don Cockell (in the Uk) in which he had the brave British fighter down multiple times. Cockell would later put on 25 pounds and have a run of 10 straight wins before challenging the great Marciano so arguably SladeĀ“s greatest win (or maybe twice beating Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson in a trilogy) which only shows how good Archie was.

If you ever get a chance watch Paul Ingle vs Manuel Medina and Colin McMillan two entertaining fights the McMillan one especially is IMO Ingle's best performance of his career.

I will check that out, D. Aside from the Jones fight, I've seen his fights with Billy Hardy and Manuel Medina (the last one there I believe was on your recommendation) and he's always in an entertaining bout. So penciled in.

D, I've been looking for the Hardy v McMillan fight with no luck. Can you point me in the right direction?
