Herol Graham v Frank Grant (British middleweight title - British scoring in effect)

    Round 1: Graham
    Round 2: Graham
    Round 3: Graham
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Grant
    Round 6: Graham
    Round 7: Grant
    Round 8: Graham
Round 9: Grant drops and stops Graham

Total through 8 completed rounds: 79-77 1/2 for Graham

To begin, let's be clear, Frank Grant was a bang-average fighter who was an ex-champ and retired the following year. He did not excel in any area other than doggedness. His main weapon in the arsenal was a haymaker and it really showed how far Graham had fallen when he was getting caught by these shots from left field and looked fragile throughout the fight. Even more amazing was Herol coming back 4 years after this and making a decent comeback. But it's always hard to watch when a fighter has to bow to father time. And this was Herol's bow.

Benny Paret - Gaspar Ortega I

    1 Paret
    2 Ortega
    3 Ortega
    4 Paret
    5 Ortega
    6 Paret
    7 Paret
    8 Ortega
    9 Ortega
    10 Paret

    95-95 Draw

I decided to watch this great fight again and i had it slightly different this time i thought Paret did better this time around than what i originally thought before. I felt Paret did have some good rounds when the pace slowed and he was able to box nicely and land accurate punches, this fight really is a nightmare to score though there is atleast 4 swing rounds and it's very hard to split them because they're literally punch for punch. I think this fight is literally the definition of one of the most legit draws you'll ever likely to see.

I don't know what possessed me to watch this. I think I mis-remembered it as being a stoppage for Little, so I ended up watching it throughout. Anyways, for what it's worth (and believe me, it ain't much with this snoozer), here is how I had it:

Michael Nunn v Steve Little (middleweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 Little (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 4: 10-9 Little
    Round 5: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Little
    Round 8: 10-9 Little
    Round 9: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 10: 10-9 Little
    Round 11: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 12: 10-10 Even

Total: 116-114 Little (actual scores: 116-114 Little, 115-113 Nunn and a 115-112 for Little by a split decision)

I gotta tell ya, Ferdie Pacheco was such a Michael Nunn cheerleader, who had him comfortably in front. There was nothing comfortable about this. It rode a very fine line. The scorecards were correct in this as far as its closeness. As far as I'm concerned about Nunn - and I know I'm being critical here - his last good fight where I thought he was impressive was the Kalambay fight. After that he devolved into a slap-artist with a shaky chin. I still laugh at @Jel 's reference to him as 'Second to Fun'

I watched a classic slugfest I don't think many have seen... Pablo Baez vs Jimmy Jackson at welterweight from 1978. I'll post a link when it finishes uploading, it's excellent.

Yeah, Nunn checked out after swallowing the hype he got from the Curtis Parker to Kalambay run. Big gaps between defences as if he was already a veteran champ with no room for improvement... decreasing output and consistency... started acting like he could just casually coast through big chunks of fights. Final nail in the coffin was probably leaving the Goosens, who had kept him on the straight and narrow on his way up. I always thought he looked out of shape in those last few defences, he tried to put on a more active effort for his hometown crowd against Toney, but probably hadn't trained hard enough to back it up and was visibly hitting the wall by the 7th round despite having taken little punishment to head or body at that point in the fight.

It said it all about how much fire for the sport he had that after a humiliating knockout upset loss in his own city, there seemed to be no effort to get a rematch. This was supposed to be a pound for pound star and potential great middle in the making.. Very few fighters at the top of the sport would avoid trying to avenge a loss like that. personally, I suspect his training habits were making it impossible to make 160 any more, but even at 168, he only really mustered one sharp looking performance that suggested there was still some pride and potential there: the Cordoba rematch. Tha turned out to be a one-off.

    Bobby Chacon vs Danny Lopez

    1 Chacon
    2 Lopez
    3 Chacon
    4 Lopez
    5 Chacon
    6 Chacon
    7 Chacon
    8 Chacon
    9 Chacon wins by TKO

    88-84 Chacon

Fun fight as you'd expect between these two i'm surprised this fight isn't talked about more people often talk about Sanchez schooling Lopez but this wasn't far off. Whilst Lopez was competitive in this fight Chacon did a great job outboxing Lopez and landing clean accurate shots especially the right hand he couldn't miss with it. Chacon isn't known for his defence but i thought he slipped alot of Lopez's punches really well.

Overall a fun fight and competitive in spots but Chacon's accurate punching and better defence was the difference here a great performance from Chacon.

    Jimmy Jackson v Pablo Baez

    Round 1: 10-8 Baez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Baez
    Round 3: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 4: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 5: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 6: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 7: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 8: 10-9 Jackson
    Round 9: 10-9 Baez
    Round 10: 10-9 Jackson

Total: 96-93 Jackson (actual scores: 96-94 and 95-94 both for Jackson and a 96-94 for Baez with Jackson winning a split decision)

Excellent club-fight, which is what the Olympic was known for. Both fighters had choppy records, but that didn't deter them from putting on a show. A good find, Russ.
