Dominant display by Paul his extra height/reach and overall better poise, balance, more refined skills were too much for the rugged slugger Ganigan. Very good performance from Paul and props for Ganigan showing alot of heart even though he was totally outgunned here.

Fun fight fought at a good pace all the way through Baez got off to a sharp start floored Jackson with a big right hand in the 1st round and then battered him in the 2nd round. After Jackson weathered the early storm though he was mostly in control being the aggressor with better workrate and simply landing more punches with some eye catching body shots.

I felt it was a pretty easy fight to score apart from the 6th round where Jackson coasted and neither fighter did a whole lot in that round. But overall a good fight but Jackson was the deserving winner and mostly controlled the fight after weathering the early storm.

I haven't no is it worth watching in terms of action ?

 

It's solid enough. Love is a very interesting fighter. Bennie showing his age but still digs to the body like a real pro and makes it competitive.

I often wonder what Briscoe's record and moderns standing would be like if he didn't take so many fights under adverse conditions... You know how the modern boxing fans look down on "ugly" records.

 

Speaking of ugly records look at Jesse Burnett he finished with a record of 23-18 but that's a false representation of him as a fighter.

Realistically Burnett was a top 10 Light Heavyweight at his best and definitely world class he remind me of a poor man's Bob Foster in a way without the devastating power.

Burnett lost so many close decisions I felt he was clearly robbed vs Leon Spinks, John Conteh, the latter he won hands down.

Lost 3 razor thin decisions to Lopez, Galindez, could easily of been 2-0 or even 3-0 vs those fighters under different circumstances.

Some fighters just don't get the push or have the name recognition to become a star.

Awesome seeing Bad Bennie back in action, even if it was a 36 year old version who looked like he was punching underwater. Compare this to the version that fought Rodrigo Valdes in their first fight (and remember that was a 32 year old version) and one can see such a difference. But taking nothing from Love, he deserved everything that came his way. A journeyman that fought everyone. And he fought a brilliant fight. I was very impressed with the way he used the ring, rather than going on a bike and his short combos were so effective. It may not have been fireworks, but I enjoyed this fight.

 

Burnett was competitive with the best in the world but just couldn’t get the breaks or come through often enough against the top guys. Some of that was Jessie (from what I’ve seen) often wasn’t a 3-minute fighter, leaving many rounds up for grabs, and he would sometimes coast for a round here and there.

Anyone know why his final meeting with Yaqui Lopez was scheduled for 15 rounds (the one in Stockton)? Nothing was on the line as near as I can tell, and 15-rounders were pretty rare by then in non-title fights.

 

A funny story on this. I attended a sports banquet years ago where Yaqui and Matthew Saad Muhammad both attended and I got into a discussion with them of who was the defending champion in their first fight and they both claimed to be the defending champ. Saad said he won the title from Marvin Johnson and Yaqui said he won it from Jesse Burnett. Neither one would let it go until I jumped in with, "Maybe one was for the NABF title and the other was for the USBA title." They both looked at each other and comically said, "Ohhhhhhhhh!" I know Yaqui always said that Jose Sulaiman was present for the 15 rounder and said that Yaqui was the North American champ. I know Yaqui would come to these events wearing a beautiful belt and I kick myself now for not reading what was engraved on it. Next day results from the 15 rounder states that the fight was for the United States and California light heavyweight championship. So it actually could have been a fore-runner of the USBA title. I will add one thing about Yaqui and Saad. They were two warriors who became fast friends. In fact, Yaqui flew out to Philly to attend Saad's funeral. Friendship born in blood.

 

Yeah, he was a very talented boxer-puncher, a bit of an old-school Archie Moore trap setting type. Just not any support structure around him and maybe lacking a certain amount of the ambition needed at times; he looked happy to settle into that "high level gatekeeper, will fight at short notice any time anywhere" role where he ended up fighting just about every good fighter of the era. He didn't always look fit enough because of that, which cost him against Cuello, someone who wasn't as talented a fighter as a lot of other guys he ran close.

My favourite Burnett is against Lonnie Bennett, another forgotten contender with very good skills and power that looked for a few years like he would be yet another dangerous fixture in the division, but he had chin issues and was a big 175lber that started struggling with the weight ( possibly he had other issues outside of the ring too that contributed, I don't know) by the time of his fight with yaqui Lopez...he maybe should have moved up to cruiser after that, but instead elected to take on Burnett after a decent layoff. Jesse gave him a brutal beating and ended his career.

In a fair sport he would have got the Saad title shot instead of a by then rapidly fading, boozing Conteh. With time for a good training camp that would have been a very interesting fight.

 

For ugly record fighters,I'd say you should look on the circumstances for their losses and who they loses to,then look at their wins also,if you can see gold in it then congrats, that's a hidden gem right there.

 

Good luck convincing 99.8 percent of modern boxing fans to watch a 10 round fight between two guys with .500 records.

 

so this is why many boxing fans currently looks to Buck Smith as a cool guy...
