Watching some Byrd bouts recently and came across this match. Idk if I'd call this a masterpiece as the other guy had no defence to save his life. I would call this a really fun fight if you enjoy theatrics, solid defence and just really good boxing. 80-71 Byrd

D, just checked it out and was pleasantly surprised at the competitiveness.

Michael Nunn v John Scully (12 rounds)

    Round 1: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 4: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 5: 10-9 Scully
    Round 6: 10-9 Scully
    Round 7: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 8: 10-9 Scully
    Round 9: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 10: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 11: 10-9 Nunn
    Round 12: 10-10 Even

Total: 117-113 Nunn (actual scores: 118-110, 120-108 and 119-109 all for Nunn)

D, you're not wrong on any of your assessments on this fight. I recall when Nunn fought Rochiaganni and again, there was this blizzrd of punches but they seemed to be targeting the German's gloves. Likewise here, many caught on Scully's high guard and it seems it's up to the judge to determine what was actually getting through. Scully's shot had more authority but Nunn was tapping away for all he was worth. Again, up to the individual on who was the most effective. I also agree with you that those scores were unusually lopsided.

I think 8 rounds to Collazo is too many I don't see how you have him winning that many TBH.

I suspect the difference in scoring will be down to assesing the effectivness of Hatton's body punches and his volume, against the cleaner head punches of Collazo. When it comes to eye catching punches, landed square on the chin - He had a clear advantage in that, as mentioned by the commentators as well. I felt He was doing more damage in majority of rounds - and on rewatch, I was trying to focus more on Hatton's work, to see if I missed something.
I certainly did miss a little bit before, so what I'll take from this debate is I won't be calling it robbery anymore. Too close for that, could make argument the other way, but I still feel judges favored not always effective aggression too much and They probably missed some of the defensive work of Luis also.

I invite more people to score it, pretty sure some would have it in line with my scorecard - while others more in line with Yours.

The issue is with Collazo he does the more flashy work but he doesn't do enough of it overall I felt Hatton clearly outworked Collazo and made it more his type of fight on the inside for the majority of the rounds.

I feel like Collazo didn't quite do enough vs Berto either although I haven't watched it in years.

I had him losing to Berto by a point. That was excellent fight as well.

Hatton fight was his best performance in my opinion, He came with a lot of pride and fought his heart out. Even looking at the stats now, He threw 712 punches to Ricky's 742. I'm quite surprised by it myself to be honest.

Anyone interested in scoring that Nino La Roca bout? The Italian judges had it by Nino by just a few points I believe, and judgy over there could be dubious back then, to say the least.

I agree Nunn probably did enough overall with his workrate even though I scored it a draw but I do feel like the judges didn't credit Scully enough for his defence and more solid blows.

    Fury vs Usyk

    Fury 4 5 6
    Usyk 1 2 3 7 8 9 10 11 12
    Close 2 3 12

    Final 117-110

1 highlighted by the overhand left from usyk

2 fury scored 2 nice uppercut to the body and 1 to the head usyk scored a solid left early. Close round

3 Flipped from my live assessment. I do think that fury still landed some good punches. But I think he was largely backed up. And they landed similar blows. Fury clinches a few times but doesn't maul Usyk good subtle head movements and a strategic battle for front hand control

4 Fury starts to score with his combinations when he starts with an authoritative jab, instead of a pawling jab.His left upper cut did damage and he began to attack the body a little bit to start the round and found a home for the right uppercup. It seems like usyk is getting timed and starting to come in a little too Straight and fury is starting to throw from slightly more awkward angles

5 fury continues to go to the body and there was a spot in the middle of the round where he was consistently coming forward before the low blow. He seems to have success with his double jab right hand and sometimes with a left hook lead. He goes to the body a little bit more this round. But usyk is still the come forward fighter and still just coming up a little short. The punches make an impact, but no one's all that hurt in there.

6 usyk started off the round Well, coming over the low left of fury then fury adjusted and started throwing the upper cut underneath and one in particular snapped his head back and had him on the retreat briefly. It seemed like he was actually hurt. Fury looked like he wanted a breather. After that, after not getting the finish or really following up He tried a home run with a wide right hand and seemed to be looking for a break while clowning at the end of the round.

7 fury landed one nice upper cut in the round. That had usyk playing with his nose, but then usyk came back with a hard straight left. The punches for fury seem to be losing steam. He tried 2 left hooks that did not land he missed with an upper cut that looked lazy. He did the jab right hand and both were blocked. It seems like the steam is coming off his punches. Maybe that's why they're getting defended. Maybe they're a little bit slower or maybe as he's tiring He's tipping his punches. Usyk also is starting to win the battle of the jabs and had a nice series near the end of the round with fury trapped on the ropes.

8 Tide is shifting this round fury Did a very good job early in the fight Blocking the lane with that left hand using the pawling jab and the fainting to create distance. Now he's not doing that so much. And usyk is closing the gap more. Usyk did a great job early in the fight Throwing that soft left to the head and chest sort of alternating with similar mechanics he's got fury guessing and now he's starting to throw the left with authority. I remember watching the fight live and thinking Wow usyk can't really hurt him. And this was the round where it seemed like the punches were starting to do damage and he was starting to really turn his shots over to hurt fury. He lands a right hook that looks a lot like the one that rocks him in the ninth

    9 no explanation needed

10 The first somewhat boring round of the fight. Usyk comes out cautiously Perhaps catching a breather fury plays defense Most of the round very responsible keeps his hands up. Fury Starts to paw with the left to create distance like he stopped doing in 7 and 8. He does land one really nice uppercut but it doesn't seem to do anything. Usyk presses a little more throws an overhand left that didn't seem like it had a lot of steam on it, but he clearly takes the round.

11 Fury gets his legs back. He lands a nice upper cut. He's starting to open up more but usyk counters when he opens up. Also, lands a really nice left at the end of the round competitive.

12 Another good competitive round. I thought usyk put his punches together a little bit. Better fury still landed a couple of hard shots. But I thought usyk did, the more consistent work.

Watching the fight a second timeI really enjoyed it.It still holds up as a very good technical fight with a lot of exciting moments.Their styles mesh very well.

After the fight had ended, I tried to think about the adjustments that were made by Usyk as fury seemingly in control of the fight blew it. I sort of attributed the loss to him not picking up the advantage that he had and not coming forward enough when he seemed to have him hurt

Watching it again it feels like a lot of this comes down to conditioning and that the consistent pressure wore fury down over the course of six or seven rounds. Fury was made to work every minute of every round, constantly Moving constantly defending constantly having to feint and jab.

I think this fight was really decided by round 7 8 and 9 Where where fury lost control of the momentum and started to get hurt. It was only after riding out the 10th round that he got his legs back and made the fight competitive again

As for the scoring live had the fight 115-112, giving fury the third and 12th in addition to the three in the middle. I know the Judges also were divided on 2,3,7,11 and were unanimous on fury taking 12. I have no real argument on 2, 3 and 12 which I felt were close. I really have to disagree on the card for fury

As for the rematch, there's 2 camps that are forming between fury Needs to lose weight and get in better shape And fury needs to gain weight and bully his way to a win where he leans and grapples. There's also a lot of debate about fury not going to the body enough

He did attempt to clinch and he did go to the body But Neither seemed to have the desired effect and I also don't think usyk was going to comply , given his foot work to avoid the inside work and his hand speed when fury tries to throw to the body and gets countered to the head.

While I think the pressure was a significant factor in wearing fury down, he did move effectively throughout the fight and did spend a decent amount of time on the ropes which was bad period. Fury came forward at times but was never able to really land a hard shot to follow up on his best work. Usyk stayed composed and rode out the difficult moments. Fury timed usyk with the uppercut and could sneak in the odd right. I don't think speed is factor in preparation in the sense that I don't feel fury could get faster in a meaningful way, but at the same time I feel like if he gains weight it could slow him down and would certainly affect his gas tank. Could fury sell out by gaining weightAnd try to go for the knockout? I don't think that would work. Anthony Joshua had that 1 moment in the ninth or 10th round of the rematch, where he had that rally, and it still wasn't enough to close the show. However, given the closeness of several of the rounds, it does feel like fury could marginally do better and steal some swing rounds. I mean, he did on the one judge's card.
