Mando Ramos v Yoshiaki Numata (lightweight title - California scoring in effect)

    Round 1: Ramos
    Round 2: Numata
    Round 3: Even
    Round 4: Ramos
Round 5: Ramos (scores a knockdown)
Round 6: Ramos drops Numata 3 times when the fight is stopped

Total through 5 completed rounds: 4-1 Ramos (actual scores not known)

Russ, this really was a treat. Mando had such a snaky and hard jab, but it was those body shots that made one say, "Ohhh!" Man, I was wincing when he was laying into his opponent. Numata really made a good go of it early until those shots started taking his resolve. He did have a pattern though, because i saw his fight with Raul Rojas and similarly, Rojas was caving in Numata to the body before Numata resorted to "Hail Mary" uppercuts, which he also tried here. It was like his last ditch effort to pull a fight out. I will say he did succeed with one of those wild uppercuts against Rojas, but Mando in his prime (which he was here), was a different package. Ramos started slipping shortly after this due to the party life and we really were deprived of a longer prime of this fighter. Because for a short time, he really was something. Thanks again, Russ.

Kelvin Seabrooks v Thierry Jacob (bantamweight title)

Round 1: 10-8 Jacob (Jacob down once and Seabrooks down twice)
    Round 2: 10-9 Jacob
    Round 3: 10-9 Jacob
    Round 4: 10-9 Jacob
    Round 5: 10-9 Jacob
    Round 6: 10-8 Jacob (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-9 Jacob
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Seabrooks
The bout is stopped by Jacob's corner before the 10th due to a cut over Jacob's right eye

Total through 9 completed rounds: 89-81 Jacob (actual scores: 88-81, 89-82 and 88-82 all with Jacob leading)

A really crazy but worthwhile fight. I believe round 1 garnered Ring's round of the year, but to tell the truth, that should have gone to round 8. A couple of things that had me perplexed was referee Paul Venti's inactions when Jacob came out for the 9th with the tape dangling from both gloves. I mean they looked like tassels it was so bad. He allowed the entire round to take place with tape flailing and never addressed it. He did the same a few rounds earlier when the tape came loose on one of Seabrooks gloves. Again, he let the round elapse but one could hear him telling the Seabrooks corner to get them taped up between rounds. I guess he was just that kind of old-school referee who didn't believe in stopping a round in progress. Secondly, I don't think that cut was that bad. In fact after the fight was stopped by Jacob's corner it wasn't even bleeding. It was rumored the corner was trying to have it go to the scorecards. If so, it was a bad strategy with only 3 rounds remaining. Maybe he was just too spent and they were looking for an easy way out. Poor ending to a damn good bout where, at times, Jacob was boxing a masterpiece.

Lionel Rose vs Yoshiaki Numata(WBC Super Featherweight Title Match)
    R1: Rose 5-4
    R2: draw 10-9
    R3: Rose 15-13
    R4: Rose 20-17
    R5: Rose 25-21
    R6: Rose 30-25
    R7: Rose 35-29
    R8: Numata 39-34
    R9: Rose 44-38
    R10: Numata 48-43
    R11: Numata 53-48
    R12: draw 58-53
    R13: Numata 62-58
    R14: Rose 67-62
    R15: Numata 72-67
Hmmm, very beautiful fight with two skilled boxer punchers,I never heard of Numata except from a ring magazine page before, and boy..he was truly a skillful fighter with those counters and sharpshooting.

However,I don't think Numata really did enough to win this fight, Rose had a very good grip on the early lead that the best I thought Numata could get is a draw, especially with those dirty attacks and how Rose did rally a little in the championship rounds(which makes the win more clear)

Overall solid, very underrated fight that many should've scored and look out for,btw the ring in this fight is kinda slippery :p

Roger Mayweather v Terrence Alli (10 rounds)

    Round 1: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 2: 10-10 Even
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 5: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 6: 10-9 Alli
    Round 7: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 8: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 9: 10-9 Mayweather
    Round 10: 10-9 Alli

Total: 98-94 Mayweather (actual scores: 98-92, 100-90 and 97-93 all for Mayweather)

A nice little contest between two top contenders. Y'know, I always liked Mayweather. He had such a deficiency with that chin, but knew how to make accommodations for it and I loved that snake-like left of his. As for Alli, he was always in a good fight

What I remember about Merritt most when he really came to the fore in '73 after the Terrell and Stander stoppages plus the Henry Clark debacle was that Jeff could bang, but he was just a bit fragile. Rich, the fight historian had a bit of a piece on him. Check it out:

He gets tapped with a left hook in the 1st round. Doesn't look like much but he's down and can't recover. He had beaten Clark on points a few years earlier and had momentum going after the Terrell and Stander fights so this was a shock.

Didn't score it but First time watch yesterday, Meldrick Taylor vs Julio Cesar Chavez 1. Awesome fight... Brutal.. I had Meldrick winning the fight in my head.. but at the same time, he slowed a bit in the later rounds and clearly was done by the 12th.. the most 'blame' therefore had to go to his corner, George Benton for some reason acting like Taylor needed the round was crazy to me.. One judge aside, it was obvious to most that Taylor was leading by several rounds.. I'd say at least 4 or 5...

Still great fight. lots of heart.. My thought on stopping the fight is well... 2 seconds left.. I don't really know to be honest. Like, Taylor didn't say anything but there's also really no way that he gets hit with another punch. By the time Steele asks him, the moment he takes to say its good to go... the bell would have rung lol. At the same time, I don't necessarily think it was a bad stoppage in the sense that Taylor didn't show he wanted to continue.. its just the timing is bad.

Side note, I don't really care about spoilers.. however, is there any resource that you can use to find fights but not the results to those fights? Youtube doesn't usually have it in the title but I mean I prefer to watch a fighter's journey and to do that, you have to look up results..

My issue is with the Taylor vs Chavez stoppage is that if the shoe was on the other foot would Steele have stopped the fight if Chavez was ahead on points going into the last round ?

Russ, when I saw this I immediately penciled in this rematch. However, I got to it today but it had already been taken down. Should have checked it out immediately. When you snooze, you lose. But their first fight was available. So here we go.....

Kid Gavilan v Ralph (Tiger) Jones I (NY scoring in effect)

    Round 1: Jones
    Round 2: Even
    Round 3: Gavilan
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Jones
    Round 6: Gavilan
    Round 7: Gavilan
    Round 8: Gavilan
    Round 9: Gavilan
    Round 10: Gavilan

Total: 6-2-2 Gavilan (actual scores: 6-4, 5-4-1 and 7-3 all for Gavilan)

By the 2nd round of this fight it was obvious that the Kid could not compete with Tiger's infighting. Jones was damn strong on the inside. It didn't stop Gav from going at it anyway, but it just wasn't smart. From the dialogue of the announcer, Gav's corner was imploring him not to engage but keep out with a jabbing attack, which he relented to do so. The crowd wasn't too happy because the brisk exchanges stopped and I'm sure Gav wasn't too happy with it either because the Kid was an entertainer. But he did start intermixing some fierce pot-shotting from the outside along with his jabbing attack and had his best rounds in rounds 8, 9 and 10, which the crowd ate up. Good fight.
