    Mike McCallum vs Herol Graham

    1 Graham
    2 McCallum
    3 McCallum
    4 Graham
    5 Graham 10-8 knockdown
    6 Graham
    7 Graham
    8 McCallum 10-8 point deduction
    9 McCallum good action
    10 McCallum
    11 McCallum
    12 Graham close

    113-113 Draw

Very close fight Graham outboxed McCallum early and had him befuddled but Graham tired late and went a bit ragged then McCallum started to do better in the 2nd half of the fight. The knockdown looked like a slip and i thought the point deduction for Graham was a bit harsh but they cancelled eachother out making it fair.

All in all tough fight to score but i had it draw.

McCallum seems to be getting more attention lately,yo.
We have 3 consecutive McCallum scoring, from what I see.
Previously: McCallum vs Toney II,robbery or no?
    Then: McCallum vs Curry
And then your scoring of his fight vs Graham.

Just about when I was gonna watch it too!

Tony Canzoneri v Barney Ross II

    Rd 1: Ross
    Rd 2: Canzoneri
    Rd 3: Ross
    Rd 4: Ross
    Rd 5: Ross
    Rd 6: Canzoneri
    Rd 7: Ross
    Rd 8: Ross
    Rd 9: Canzoneri
    Rd 10: Ross
    Rd 11: Ross
    Rd 12 Canzoneri
    Rd 13: Canzoneri
    Rd 14: Draw
    Rd 15: Canzoneri

    Final scorecard*: 8-6-1 Ross

Interesting clash of styles. Canzoneri is fascinating to watch with his erratic head movement and hands constantly kept down low. Ross was largely in control for the first ten rounds. He was successfully stifling Canzoneri's punches and his opponent had no solution for his steady left jab. Canzoneri came out alive in the last four rounds and was getting the better of Ross in their exchanges but by then I felt Ross has built comfortable enough lead.

*Scored it based on available footage. There is around 15 minutes of action missing.

Watched a couple of Wilfredo Gomez fights today that I never saw before. The first was:

Wilfredo Gomez v Roberto Rubaldino (super bantamweight title)

Won't run a card here, I had it a whitewash for Gomez. he simply dominated against Rubaldino who fought the fight with a high southpaw guard and never really did anything to say that he wanted the title. A mystery, as was his sudden retirement when the bell rang for the 8th. He never really looked like he was taking a thumping as he was defense first, but opted out at the 8th round bell. I had Gomez winning every round for a 70-63 score (actual scores: 70-64, 70-64 and 70-66 all for Wilfredo).

Wilfredo Gomez v Raul Tirado (super bantamweight title)

Again, won't run a card here. However, the difference between Rubaldino and Raul Tirado was that Tirado wanted the title and put up a fight. The second round especially saw him tagging Gomez with several counter left hooks and a steady jab. That jab had Gomez' left eye swollen by the fight's end in the 5th. Gomez dropped Tirado in the 3rd and again in the 5th when it was stopped. I had it 40-35 through 4 rounds of a good fight. Again, Tirado came to put up a fight, unlike Rubaldino who was looking to survive. The announcer made a point of saying that Gomez was making $75,000 for the fight and Tirado made only $8,000. I liked Tirado's quote, "I'm here for the title, I'm certainly not here for the money."

    Lupe Pintor v Carlos Zarate

    Rd 1: 9-10 Zarate
    Rd 2: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 3: 9-10 Zarate
    Rd 4: 8-10 Zarate

    Rd 7: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 8: 9-10 Zarate

    Rd 11: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 12: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 13: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 14: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 15: 10-9 Pintor

    Final scorecard: 143-141 Pintor

Somewhat controversial opinion perhaps but I believe Pintor was the rightful winner. I don't understand what fight the judge who scored the fight 145-133 for Zarate was watching. Zarate had his big moment in the 4th round where he scored the knockdown with a beautiful two punch combination. 5th round was also a good round for him but overall I felt he fought too tentatively. Pintor, in my view, won the fight with his ring generalship and a superior work rate. And as the fight progressed he really started to time Zarate with his counters. He was also getting the better of Zarate when they fought inside. 10th round in particular was a huge round for Pintor during which he staggered Zarate with an impeccably timed left jab and proceeded to beat him up for the remainder of the round.

The judge with the lopsided score inexplicably (don't they go over rules with judges?) Scored the fight on the 5 point must system. When told about his error he simply doubled all scores. The problem with that was a 5-4 round became a 10-8 round. So he had a mass of 10-8 rounds at the end.

I had no idea about this. Thanks for the info. It's crazy that something like this happened. Was the judge in question a complete novice or something ?

Viy, the judge's name was Bob Martin and yes, he was a relative novice. He had been a judge for only about a year and according to his record he was a Nevada judge, where they used the 5 point must system. I don't know if Nevada was adopting the 10 point system at the time or if it was because it was a championship fight that it was 10 points, but I think I would have asked about the scoring if it was my first championship fight that I was officiating. Moreover, I take Nevada to task that they wouldn't have ensured their officials were up to speed with scoring and rules. Just very unprofessional.

Pedroza in that fight was the closest thing of what Fritzie Zivic's style would've looked like on footage, imo

Lupe Pintor v Alberto Davila II

    Rd 1: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 2: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 3: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 4: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 5: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 6: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 7: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 8: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 9: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 10: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 11: 9-10 Davila
    Rd 12: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 13: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 14: 10-9 Pintor
    Rd 15: 10-9 Pintor

    Final scorecard: 143 - 142 Pintor

Tale of two halves. I thought Davila boxed wonderfully for the first seven rounds. I would even go as far as to say he was schooling Pintor. He was light on his feet. He was outworking his opponent, as well as landing cleaner punches. Unfortunately for him, he was unable to maintain his intense pace and this is when Pintor took over. As Davila started fighting more flat footed, Pintor, a signficantly heavier hitter, was getting the better of him in their exchanges, although Davila still offered formidable resistance. Pintor also smartly invested in the body of his opponent which contributed greatly to Davila losing steam as the fight progressed. From the 8th round going forward, I have given every round to Pintor, with the exception of round 11th when Davila appeared to have gotten a second breath and again started moving nicely. Overall a great, action-packed fight !

Muhammad Ali v Oscar Bonavena (NY rounds scoring)

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Ali
    Round 3: Ali
    Round 4: Bonavena
    Round 5: Ali
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Ali
    Round 8: Bonavena
    Round 9: Even
    Round 10: Ali
    Round 11: Bonavena
    Round 12: Ali
    Round 13: Even
    Round 14: Ali
Round 15: Ali drops Oscar 3 times for an automatic stoppage under the 3 knockdown rule

Total through 14 completed rounds: 7-3-4 Ali (actual scores: 8-5-1, 12-2 and 10-3-1 all for Ali)

I wanted to see this again as I did watch it live when I was a kid and just needed to check it out again. Bad mistake. Ali looked woeful here and if I was gauging how he looked here going against Frazier I would pick Joe in a heartbeat. A truly amazing difference from this fight to his performance against Frazier. But I digress. Oscar gave a good account of himself in his own unique, take-no-prisoner style but the fight was a stinker.

    Holyfield vs Bowe 1.

To my surprise I had it 6-6 in rounds but Bowe won due to the 10-8 KD in R11. Most people think Bowe won comfortably but I strongly disagree.

I had it 6-4 Fury I think but I could easily see 5-5 or 6-4 the other way.

Sonny Liston vs Cleveland Williams 1

    1 Williams
    2 Liston
    3 Liston wins by TKO

Sonny Liston vs Cleveland Williams 2

    1 Liston
    2 Liston wins by TKO

I decided to watch these fights back to back again and boy did these two really let go with some real heavy blows.

Williams came out blazing in both fights looking to end the fight early but the difference between the two fighters is Liston could take his punches where as Williams couldn't take Liston's best punches.

Two very exciting short fights though between two of the hardest hitting Heavyweights of their era.

Both @Dynamicpuncher and @Flo_Raiden recently recommended this fight and I'm finally getting to it.

Michael Brodie v Neil Swain (vacant British super bantamweight title)

    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Brodie
    Round 3: Brodie
    Round 4: Even
    Round 5: Brodie
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Swain
    Round 8: Even
    Round 9: Brodie
Round 10: Brodie drops and stops Swain

    Total: 89 1/2 - 88 Brodie

A couple of things to take from this fight. First and foremost, a great fight fought at break-neck speed from the start and never ceased until the final blow in the 10th that put Swain Swooning. Secondly, I have never had so many even rounds. That is 4 in 9 completed rounds. That will tell you how tight this fight was. Lastly, this fight was from 1997. When did Britain go back to that fractional ten to nine and a half scoring? Did they just go back to it briefly? I guess we're just spoiled with the cleaner 10-9 scoring. But again, thanks guys. Great fight.
