Marco Antonio Barerra vs Juan Manuel Marquez.

It was a great fight between 2 mexican warriors. Barerra thorough the first quarter of the fight was beating Marquez to the punch, then Marquez adjusted and started to counter Barerra with Right hands over the top. Then comes the 7th round a round where JMM was clearly winning and BANG Barerra lands a big right hand that puts knocked him down, and gets gets no credit for it. I understand the reasoning behind the docked point, but why was Barerra not given the credit for the KD when it was clear as day a legit KD. Not that it would have made a difference though, because the official judges had JMM way ahead when the actual fight was down to the wire. I had it 114-113 to Barerra, I thought he should have gotten the win in this close fight.

    M.A.B. VS J.M.M

    R1. 10. 9
    R2. 10. 9
    R3 9. 10
    R4. 10. 9
    R5 9. 10
    R6. 10. 9
    R7 8. 10
    R8. 10. 9
    R9 10 9
    R10 9 10
    R11 10 9
    R12. 9. 10

    114. 113

1 POINT WIN FOR MAB. No way did JMM win by such a wide margin.

For me the 7th round for JMM was 10-8 round because he was so dominant in the round prior to the incident at the end so for me that round could in actual fact be scored 10-7.

But Barrera's knockdown was actually legit despite Jay Nady messing up the call so it would be unfair to score it 10-7 so I guess 10-8 is probably correct.

I had Marquez winning by 2 points I thought it was close but clear.

Luis Manuel Rodriguez vs Emile Griffith 4

I'm trying out a different format.

Rd 1: 4-5 Griffith - Griffith started of rather aggressively. He clipped Rodriguez good with the right cross couple of times and opened up a cut over his right eye. Quiet round for Rodriguez.

Rd 2: 5-4 Rodriguez - The round began with the exchange of left jabs. Rodriguez picked up the aggression and began targeting Griffith's body. Also landed a nice one two combo. Good round for Rodriguez.

Rd 3: 4-4 Even - Another good round for Rodriguez. He was outhustling Griffith on the inside, and connecting well with his right cross. Some tension between the combatants could be observed. Rodriguez hit Griffith with the low blow for which he had a point deducted and Griffith retaliated by punching Rodriguez as they were being separated by the ref.

Rd 4: 5-4 Rodriguez - Rodriguez opened with a hard left hook to Griffith's jaw. He was getting the better of Griffith in their exchanges.

Rd 5: 5-4 Rodriguez - Lots of inside fighting in this round. Rodriguez again landed a nice left hook and was getting the better of Griffith when they fight on the inside.

Rd 6: 4-5 Griffith - Closely contested round, but Griffith's left hook was the most impactful punch of the round. Cut above Rodriguez's right eye was re-opened.

Rd 7: 5-4 Rodriguez - Rodriguez won this one with his volume punching. He relentlessly targeted Griffith's body and later connected with a nice overhand right.

Rd 8: 5-4 Rodriguez - Another round that Rodriguez won with his body punches. Griffith is being completely outworked so far.

Rd 9: 4-5 Griffith - Rodriguez releases foot of the gas, and Griffith finally takes the initiative. Close round but I gave it to Griffith because he landed slightly cleaner punches.

Rd 10: 5-4 Rodriguez- Exciting round. Both fighters delivered hard and clean punches, but Griffith was again slightly outlanded.

Rd 11: 5-5 Even - Griffith clipped Rodriguez with a terrific counter, and then Rodriguez responded with his own straight right. The rest of the round was fought on even terms.

Rd 12: 5-4 Rodriguez - Rodriguez landed cleaner this round. He hit Griffith with the nice right hook to the jaw. Blows were exchanged well after the bell. There appears to be some bad blood between the two !

Rd 13: 5-4 Rodriguez - Griffith is now customarily being outworked. Rodriguez hit him with an outstanding right cross that could really be heard !

Rd 14: 4-5 Griffith - Great round for Griffith. He momentarily stunned Rodriguez with a strong right uppercut. Also finished the round with a nice left hook to Rodriguez's jaw with the sound of the bell.

Rd 15: 4-5 Griffith - The most uneventful round of the fight. I thought Griffith did slightly better. As the final bell sounds, combatants walk up to each other for a friendly embrace.

    Final scorecard: 69-66 RODRIGUEZ

    Actual scorecards:

Referee: Harold Krause 69-67 for GRIFFITH
Judge: David Zenoff 70-71 for RODRIGUEZ
Judge: John Romero 70-68 for GRIFFITH

D, this is how I had it:

Great fight but what a toughie to score. I always said my toughest was the Antonio Cervantes v Wilfredo Benitez 15 rounder due to subtle shifts with those two artists. But this was a slam-bang war that was equally frustrating, maybe moreso. Get ready for a head scratcher.

Marco Antonio Barrera v Juan Manuel Marquez (jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Barrera
    Round 3: 10-9 Marquez
    Round 4: 10-9 Marquez
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Barrera
Round 7: 10-8 Marquez (Marquez had a great round, but right at the end was dropped by a smoking right hand and then really purposely nailed Marquez on the canvas - Jay Nady amazingly ruled the KD a slip and then quite rightly docks Barrera a point)
    Round 8: 10-9 Barrera
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Marquez
    Round 11: 10-9 Marquez
    Round 12: 10-10 Even

    Total: 117-114 Marquez

Arghhh! Tissue paper-close rounds made this war infuriating to score. Actual scores were 118-109 and 116-111 (twice) all for Marquez does not reflect how tight this fight was. I hated to have so many evens, but this was incredibly tight. Barrera's counters were great but Marquez won it for me on aggression. But to tell you the truth, I can see someone scoring this for Barrera too. A word to the wise if watching, the HBO team are real Barrera cheerleaders. So, a grain of salt when listening.

Viy, I always felt this was a robbery. Here is how I had it:

Emile Griffith and Luis Rodriguez IV (welterweight title)

Excellent fight until the latter rounds when clinches became more frequent, but did not detract from the fight for me.

    Round 1: 5-4 EG
    Round 2: 5-4 LR
Round 3: 4-4 Even (I had Rodriguez winning this one but 1 point was deducted for a low blow)
    Round 4: 5-4 LR
    Round 5: 5-4 LR
    Round 6: 5-4 LR
    Round 7: 5-4 LR
    Round 8: 5-4 LR
    Round 9: 5-4 LR
    Round 10: 5-5 Even
    Round 11: 5-4 LR
    Round 12: 5-4 EG
    Round 13: 5-5 Even
    Round 14: 5-4 EG
    Round 15: 5-4 LR

I had it 71-65 for Rodriguez. I cannot come up with any way possible of favoring Griffith in this one. For me, Rodriguez is simply the busier fighter. I think his body work was really ignored in this one as well as their third fight. Perhaps the key is when Dunphy mentions Griffith was catching a lot on his arms. i don't know. Maybe at ringside it looked different, but on youtube, even allowing for Griffith catching blows, Rodriguez was still the busier fighter. And as the fight wore on Griffith's body language told a tale. One could see him shifting and grimacing when Rodriguez was going to the body. These blows were getting through and telling. Bad decision.

Yes, Rodriguez definitely deserved the win. He was consistently outworking Griffith and was also connecting with the more eye-catching punches. It does appear his work to the body was unfairly neglected by the judges, sadly. For me, his body punches were the real difference-maker, and as you said, Griffith clearly felt them.

Truthfully, the only rounds I believe it can be said that Griffith won convincingly were 1st and 14th. Other three rounds I gave to Griffith were all rather close. Perhaps, I was even generous to Griffith when I awarded him the final round since that round mostly came down to clinching.

Omar Sheika v Kevin Pompey (10 rounds)

    Round 1: 10-9 Sheika
    Round 2: 10-6 Sheika (scores 2 knockdowns)*
    Round 3: 10-9 Sheika
    Round 4: 10-9 Pompey
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Sheika
    Round 7: 10-9 Pompey
Round 8: Referee stops contest in favor of Sheika

Total through 7 completed rounds: 68-63 Sheika (scores unknown)

*To begin, first let me clarify my score of 10-6 in the 2nd round. The 10 point must allows a lot of latitude and, although I'm a somewhat conservative scorer, I exercised my scoring accordingly. And by that I mean, had it not been for the 2 knockdowns scored, I would have had it 10-8 for Sheika because he battered Pompey throughout. So why simply utilize the 2 knockdowns to make it 10-7 as the two at the mic (Czyz and Ferdie Pacheco) did. I felt the proper score, fully utilized was 10-6.

As for the fight, it was a damn good fight. Pompey was at the end of his tether but was still able to make a fight of it with his sharp counters and fighting heart, despite the size difference between the two (Pompey was really a career welterweight fighting at super middleweight).
The stoppage was controversial, especially after referee Tony Orlando let the fight go on in the 2nd round. But there was one point in the 8th I saw that made me see why it was stopped. I saw when it happened but they replayed it in slo-mo which corroborated what i saw. Just before Orlando jumped in, Pompey did this odd shake of his head. It didn't look like a shake of the head to say "It didn't hurt." It looked to me more of shaking the cobwebs which one might see when a fighter is taking a count. But you don't do that while you're getting hammered. That's a sure sign that you're in major distress while the other guy is pummeling you. I don't know, but that's my take.

Rocky Lockridge v Cornelius Boza Edwards

    Rd 1: 8-10 Boza Edwards
    Rd 2: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 3: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 4: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 5: 10-10 Even
    Rd 6: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 7: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 8: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 9: 10-9 Lockridge
    Rd 10: 10-9 Lockridge

    Final scorecard: 98-92 LOCKRIDGE

Impressive performance by Lockridge. After suffering a knockdown in the 1st round, he quickly seized control of the fight and maintained it until the final bell. He fought a clever fight and exhibited great composure following the early shock. Boza did well sporadically, but Lockridge's work was far more concrete.

I had it a bit wider than you did.

Lupe Pintor vs Alberto Davila 2

    1 Pintor
    2 Davila
    3 Davila
    4 Pintor
    5 Davila
    6 Davila
    7 Pintor
    8 Pintor
    9 Pintor
    10 Pintor
    11 Davila
    12 Pintor
    13 Pintor
    14 Pintor
    15 Pintor

    145-140 Pintor

Love this fight a great contrast of styles the boxer against the puncher, i feel like Davila had the better of it early on with his counter punching and quick hands getting in and out beating Pintor to the punch. The 7th round was the turning point in the fight for me when Pintor invested to the body punching going to work like a surgeon. And from that point on i felt like Pintor had the better of it for most part landing the harder/more effective punches, i have to say i love Pintor's body punching and his uppercut is a peach of a punch aswell.

I do feel like the judges were a bit kind to Davila no doubt he was competitive throughout the fight and had a strong start. But i feel like Pintor won pretty much every round in the 2nd half of the fight and run away with it somewhat.

Overall a great fight though very underrated definitely one of the better Mexican clashes i've seen.

Roman Gonzalez vs Francisco Estrada I.

Holy smokes, this fight was amazing! I didn't think the scorecards did this fight justice, it was a close fight with some of the hardest rounds to score. I had it 115-113 for Estrada but I can see it going to Choco by the same score. 118-110 my ass. Great fight though and one of the better trilogies in boxing history.

    115-113 Francisco El Gallo Estrada.

    Fury Wilder 1.

114-112 Fury. Funny enough there were a lot of close rounds so while I think a draw is pretty generous to Wilder not in agreement it's "robbery"

Pernell Whitaker v Oscar De La Hoya

Rd 1: 9-10 De La Hoya - Cautious start by both fighters. It's a close round, but DLH did slightly more.
Rd 2: 9-10 De La Hoya - Whitaker's superb defensive skills were on full display in this round, as he evaded eight consecutive punches from DLH. Oscar acknowledged his opponent's dexterity by cracking a smile. Even though Whitaker made him look foolish in the aforementioned sequence, DLH still won the round due to his activity and power punches in the last 90 seconds.
Rd 3: 9-9 Even- Whitaker scored nicely with his right jab and was quick enough to step out of the way on time to escape Oscar's counters. While it was a competitive round, I liked Whitaker's work more in this one. Point deducted from Whitaker because of a headbutt.
Rd 4: 9-10 De La Hoya - Whitaker made DLH miss a lot, but he neglected his offense. DLH easily takes this one based on his superior output.
Rd 5: 10-9 Whitaker - Whitaker's defensive mastery is again on full display, but this time he also hit DLH clean with some nice two punch combinations. Convincingly won round by Sweet Pea.
Rd 6: 9-10 De La Hoya - Not the most exciting round. DLH edges it for me since he landed the most impactful punch of the round when he landed a nice left hook counter that threw Whitaker off balance.
Rd 7: 10-9 Whitaker- Efficient jab work from Whitaker wins him this one.
Rd 8: 9-10 De La Hoya - Whitaker is beginning to look somewhat frustrated. DLH scores with a crisp left hook to Whitaker's jaw with around 40 seconds left.
Rd 9: 10-8 Whitaker - Whitaker at his most aggressive so far. He scored a flash knockdown with about a minute left. Some awesome brawling near the end of round.
Rd 10: 10-10 Even - Incredibly close round. I watched it three times and I still couldn't clearly determine who won it. So I think it's only fair I score it 10-10.
Rd 11: 10-9 Whitaker - Another tightly contested round. Sweet Pea did slightly better work IMO.
Rd 12: 9-10 De La Hoya - Sweet Pea was ridiculously passive in this round. Commentators got it right. He fought like he was hugely up on the scorecards, and only needed to protect his lead. DLH won this one based on activity and aggression.

Final scorecard: 114-113 DE LA HOYA

I think the judicial scorecards were too wide. This was a true 50/50 fight.

Edit: Corrected my mistake. Point deduction happened it the 3rd, not the 2nd round.
