Here’s my write up and card from a few years ago, Chris:

Chris Eubank v Michael Watson 1

This takes me back! I haven't watched this fight in nearly 30 years. The best way I can describe the prestige of this fight domestically is that it was for the British Middleweight Chanpionship of the World. To be a British boxing fan back then for me was a bit like being in a bubble and the fact that this fight was contested for a spurious 'world' title mattered little; this was a fight that mattered in the UK where boxing was on the main channels on a Saturday night and everyone knew who these fighters were (and you'd get to hear the thoughts of UK celebrities like Nigel Kennedy between rounds). Both Eubank and Watson had beaten common opponent Nigel Benn so the winner would become the no. 1 160 pounder in the country.

Eubank is now viewed in the UK as a somewhat lovable eccentric so watching the pre-fight build up reminded me what a divisive figure he was at that time. Until Naz came along a few years later, he was probably the most hated figure in British boxing in the 90s.

To the fight: my memory was that Watson deserved to win but that could have easily been fuelled by my own anti-Eubank sentiment back then. Watching it now, I can appreciate much more the work that Eubank was doing. His movement and countering, particularly in the second half of the fight were very good and kept the more orthodox Watson guessing a lot of the time. Eubank also showed a good level of aggression, something that post-Watson he would lose and that would make some of title defenses up at 168 close to unwatchable.

I can actually see this a bit wider to Eubank than I have on my scorecard so I feel Eubank did enough to win, even though Watson rallied a bit over the last few rounds.

This was a good, absorbing fight to watch and not the controversy I remembered it being.

    1 9-10 (close, cagey)
    2 9-10
    3 10-9
4 10-9 (close, Eubank edged it with the best flurry of the round)
    5 10-9
    6 9-10
    7 10-9
8 10-9 (good head movement and countering from Eubank)
9 10-9 (Eubank's movement and sudden offensive bursts are frustrating Watson, who switches southpaw briefly)
10 10-10 (A better round from Watson who had some clear moments of success but Eubank held his own)
11 9-10 (Watson timing his counters better against Eubank's attacks and blocking punches well)
12 9-10 (close. I had Watson edging it with the more accurate work against a somewhat sloppy Eubank)

    Eubank 115-114 Watson

Revisiting a personal favourite of mine. I abided by the referee's decisions when scoring the rounds, but come on, Provodnikov clearly scored a knockdown in the 1st round. That shouldn't have been ruled a slip ! I believe draw would have been the most just outcome.

D, finally getting around to this fight. And man, there was some controversial points to this fight. But a good fight it was. Here we go...

Serhii Bohachuk v Vergil Ortiz (some crap interim thing at jr. middleweight)

Round 1: 10-8 SB (I had this round Even, until the 5th round when they finally stated "It was a knockdown" - talk about can't make a decision)
    Round 2: 10-9 Ortiz
    Round 3: 10-9 Ortiz
    Round 4: 10-9 SB
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Ortiz
    Round 7: 10-9 SB
Round 8: 10-10 Even (Borachuk scores a 'knockdown' even though it is clearly a slip. It was BS. Ortiz had a good round and I am exercising my opinion to the max here)
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Ortiz
    Round 11: 10-9 Ortiz
    Round 12: 10-9 Ortiz

Total: 116-114 Ortiz (actual scores: 114-112, 114-112 both for Ortiz and a 113-113 for a majority win for Ortiz.)

To begin, this was one close fight with very close rounds. Ortiz was coming in with his heavy hooks which were eye-catchers, but Borachuk was coming right down the middle with jabs, straight rights and uppercuts for some very close rounds. Regarding rounds 1 and 8. I don't know what was going on with Harvey Dock or the ringside commission. Why were they so indecisive? One could hear Dock saying to the ringsiders in the 1st round saying, "It was a knockdown, no need to review it." One would think he made a call and that's it. But 4 rounds later they re-review and call it a knockdown. I guess the rules have changed where VAR can overrule the ref. I felt it was a KD so I scored it 10-8. In the 8th - total BS! Ortiz slipped and was having a good round where he even stunned Borachuk. I simply was not giving Borachuk a 10-8 round for a faux knockdown and ignoring Ortiz' solid work that round. I evened it out. If it was an official card, I'd probably be on the carpet explaining myself. Oh, wait, I don't think they give a rats-a*s, otherwise we wouldn't be having all those ridiculous/corrupt decisions. But I digress from the fight. Rounds 10, 11 and 12 Ortiz really turned it around with the fight slipping away and showed he could box a bit and offer head movement, while sharp-shooting with the right to close the show. Rounds 11 and 12 were about the best with the decision hanging in the balance.

    Beterbiev Vs. Bivol 2

    1. Bivol
    2. Biev (Close Round)
    3. Biev
    4. Biev
    5. Biev
    6. Bivol
    7. Bivol
    8. Bivol
    9. Biev (disagree with Sky commentators. Bivol hit gloves the whole round.) (Close Round)
    10. Biev (Close Round)
    11. Bivol
    12. Biev

7-5 Biev. But all three of my close rounds to Biev. So I could see anywhere from 115-113 Biev, if you give all three of my close rounds to him like I did, or 116-112 Bivol if you gave all three to him.

Dang we pretty much felt the same way about that fight. I thought I was going to look stupid posting my scorecard because the fight was sort of hard to score. I also had it 115-113 Watson but could see a Eubank win.

I posted my thoughts on another persons scorecard that it made me feel better to see others had it score close like me, and that a lot of the rounds alternated winners. This fight was as subjective as it gets. Was one of the hardest fights I’ve tried to score.

Alright. gonna do Mayweather Castillo 1.

next will be Eubank v Schommer.

    Mayweather Vs. Castillo 1

    Rd. 1 Mayweather
    Rd. 2 Mayweather
    Rd. 3 Castillo
    Rd. 4 Mayweather
    Rd. 5 Mayweather
    Rd. 6 Castillo
    Rd. 7 Castillo
Rd. 8 Mayweather 10-8 (A downright heinous Point Deduction to Castillo.)
    Rd. 9 Castillo
Rd. 10 Mayweather 9-9 (Honestly a more legit point deduction, but feel it was a makeup call to be honest for the earlier ridiculous point deduction.)
    Rd. 11 Castillo
    Rd. 12 Mayweather

    Final Score: 114-112 Mayweather

I remember watching this fight back in the day and thinking, no way Castillo didn’t win this fight. And now that I’ve got somewhat more experience knowing what to look for, being able to differentiate aggression with effective aggression, and being able to see punches that actually land better especially in flurries and combinations, this fight went a lot different this time.

Also, if Castillo truly landed 200+ punches like compubox said, then they were counting some that hit the shoulder roll, and gloves. There’s no way in my opinion. Floyd had Castillo frustrated to the max as of the 10th round. That being said, the fight was close to that point, Floyd only ahead by a couple points.

I know I said Eubank Vs. Schommer was next and I’m going to do it still, but I forgot all about these 2 fights that I want to score. Alvarez Vs. GGG 1 & 2. I’ve actually scored the first fight before. I had it 8-4 or 116-112 GGG, but never scored the second. I’ll end up giving the first fight a fresh look as well but for now, I’m going to give the second one a watch.

    Alvarez Vs. Golovkin 2

    Rd. 1 10-9 Alvarez.
GGG was pumping hard jabs, but felt Canelo was jabbing better and landed a couple more than GGG and landed a nice left hook midway through the round.

    Rd. 2 10-9 Alvarez.
Landed beautiful, quick combinations. Another close-ish round, GGG landed some good jabs but Canelo def edges it IMO.

    Rd. 3 10-9 Alvarez.
GGG just felt like he gave up the first half of the round. He wasn’t doing much. More even the second half of the round but you gotta base it on all 3 minutes.

    Rd. 4 10-9 Golovkin.
Almost a reverse of last round. Golovkin worked all 3 minutes, peppered him with jabs and did some decent body work. Canelo decided not to work until halfway through, but did end round strong.

    Rd. 5 10-9 Alvarez.
I almost feel like Canelo is out jabbing the world class jabber in Golovkin. Canelo is fighting a great fight so far. Again, close round though. Probably the closest one of the fight.

    Rd. 6 10-9 Golovkin.
Again close round but I liked Golovkins hard punches. He landed about 6 or 7 hard thumping shots.

    4-2 Canelo after 6.

    Rd. 7 10-9 Alvarez.
Just landing more. Almost pushing GGG back. Stops him in his tracks when he lands. It was close but Canelo is just edging these rounds. He always answers GGG back right away when he gets hit.

    Rd. 8 10-9 Golovkin.
Landed strong stiff jabs. Canelo wasn’t answering those punches with as much urgency as before.

    Rd. 9 10-9 Golovkin.
Best round of the fight. Golovkin seemed a little desperate here but he was landing. Canelo was too but thought Golovkin landed a couple more shots.

    Rd. 10 10-9 Golovkin.
I wanted to give it to Canelo but GGG just peppered him in the last 45 seconds or so after landing a good flurry in the first minute.

5-5 after 10 rounds. Lots and lots of close rounds. A couple GGG rounds earlier in the fight I could see going to Canelo on some scorecards. Most of Canelos close rounds have been close too, but clear IMO.

    Championship Rounds

    Rd. 11 10-9 Alvarez.
Again, CLOSE. This is one of Canelos rounds that could for sure be a GGG round but I felt he landed more especially having it even until the last 30 seconds and Canelo landed more in those same 30 seconds.

    Rd. 12 10-9 Golovkin.
Canelo looked tired. GGG closed it out slightly in the final round.

    Final Score: 114-114 DRAW.

Wow, what a fight. This was a tale of two halves. Canelo in the 1st, GGG in the 2nd. Great Great fight. Look I hate draws. These guys train, and train and train. They sacrifice so much, that they, and the fans, deserve to know who the winner is. That being said, if there was ever a fight that a Draw is acceptable, it’s this one. Either guy winning 7-5 is also acceptable. Honestly, even though this (mine) scorecard says DRAW, if I had to pick a winner on the eye test, I would say the right winner won. Canelo was just a tick better this night I feel. I’m talking like 52/48 in favor of Alvarez that’s how close this was.

alright I’m done rambling, just wanted to get my thoughts on the fight out there. I’m out for the night!

In light of Greg Haugen's passing, I wanted to check out a fight of his that I have never seen. And I alighted on....

Greg Haugen v Tony Lopez (10 rounds)

    Round 1: 10-9 Haugen
    Round 2: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 3: 10-9 Haugen
    Round 4: 10-9 Haugen
    Round 5: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 6: 10-8 Lopez (scores a knockdown)
    Round 7: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 8: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 9: 10-9 Lopez
    Round 10: Lopez stops Haugen

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-83 Lopez (actual scores not known)

Man, talk about a good choice of a fight to watch. These two really went at it. Haugen had deceptively good fundamentals, which he stuck to throughout. A good, hard jab that was marking up Lopez early and was controlling the fight through the first four rounds. But around the 5th, the more fluid Lopez realized he could hit Haugen anytime he wanted to with his overhand right, which he made a point of. Haugen wasn't finished however, as a butt-induced cut on Lopez' left eye was so bad that one would not be remiss if they felt the fight should be stopped. But it carried on into the 10th where Lopez went right hand crazy again before Richard Steele intervened. Good fight and it was good seeing Harold Lederman getting up into the ring to interview the victor. He should have been used more in this vein because he asked the kind of questions I wanted the answers to. But again, good fight and Haugen went out on his shield.

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Pernell Whitaker.

Pernell boxed a great fight, he frustrated Chavez with Ring Generalship and quick combinations. I had Whitaker winning 9 rounds to 3, with the 3 Rounds 1, 6, 9 going to Chavez. One of the biggest Robberies in the sport of Boxing.

    117-111 Pernell Whitaker.

I thought Mayweather won 7-5ish as well.

Thought the same from the Maidana fight so to me Mayweather never lost.

    Roberto Duran v Ernesto Marcel

    Rd 1: Marcel
    Rd 2: Duran
    Rd 3: Marcel
    Rd 4: Marcel
    Rd 5: Duran
    Rd 6: Duran
    Rd 7: Duran
    Rd 8: Draw
    Rd 9: Marcel
DURAN wins by a 10th round TKO
My scorecard after 9 completed rounds: 4-4-1 DRAW

Very close and competitive fight with an absolutely baffling conclusion. Referee stopped the fight with 18 seconds left in the final round, even though Marcel didn't seem hurt in the slightest. Ninth round was a round I thought Marcel won, but for whatever reason he didn't throw a single punch in the tenth. So was referee's stoppage supposed to be a punishment for his inactivity ? Marcel didn't protest the stoppage at all. He just quietly walked to his corner, as Duran celebrated right in his face. I have so many questions. Why did Marcel elect not to fight in the tenth round when this was seemingly a close fight whose outcome could have possibly been decided in the final round ? Did he sustain an injury ? Did he believe he was hugely up on the scorecards and needed to protect the lead ? Was it a fix ? Utterly bizarre ending. I am also curious to know at what weight did they fight. According to BoxingNews24 article the fight was at Featherweight, but Boxrec shows it was actually at Super Featherweight.
