    Barry McGuigan v Jose Caba

To tell you the truth, when this match was made, I thought it was a little ambitious for the McGuigan camp. Jose Caba was one tough dude who really didn't deserve his title shot the first time around against Danny Lopez, but certainly did his second time around against Eusebio Pedroza. Having posted recent wins over Jackie Beard, Rocky Garcia, Nicky Perez and Blaine Dickson, he gave Pedroza a good account of himself over 15 rounds. So I looked at this fight nervously back in the day, as I was following Barry closely. This fight proved him at a world class level. Won't run a scorecard here. Barry won every round on my card before Caba came apart under the machine-like bombardment of McGuigan, with the referee intervening in the 7th. Under the British scoring at the time (10 - 9 1/2) I had it 60-57 after six completed rounds of a very competitive fight.

    Concluding my Barry McGuigan-fest

Barry McGuigan v Valerio Nati (vacant Euro featherweight title)

Again, I won't run a card here. I only gave Nati a share of the 2nd round because he really made a concerted effort to get into this fight. Not sure of the scoring in a Euro affair, so with the 10-point must I had it 50-46 for McGuigan through 5 completed rounds. He was stepping it up considerably in the 5th and in the 6th was starting to lather the Italian to the body and head before dropping the never-been-down-before Nati in a corner. McGuigan's skill trajectory was intense with how he was improving with every fight. It was a special time also. The crowd was loving it, the announcers were loving it. The TV networks on this side of the pond were jumping on the bandwagon and televising every one of his fights. Fun times.

    George Foreman vs Mike Jameson

This one was in Las Vegas between George’s wins over Gerry Cooney and Adilson Rodriguez. Not going to go into full detail here, but journeyman Jameson hasn’t fought in three years but he’s a mix between survivalist and selectively frisky.

Jameson may have edged the first round with a couple crisp combinations but George gets that telephone-pole jab going in the second. Mike had been trying to smother George inside rather than move/run like a lot of guys and the jab created some operating room for Foreman’s offense.

He knocks Jameson’s mouthpiece out I think three times, once on an uppercut that seemed to launch it clear across the ring and over the ropes, like kicking a field goal. Jameson starts to pitch forward and George walks away rather than take advantage — Mills Lane uses the break to get the mouthpiece retrieved.

Late third, George lands a left hook to the body that seemed to completely sap Jameson, then puts him down with a 1-2-3 follow. In the fourth, Foreman opens a nasty cut over Jameson’s left eye and batters him pretty good, finally putting him down for the finish.

Just wanted to take a little time to go back and appreciate Old George. He was something we had never seen — an older, way heavier heavyweight who seemed to have the self-awareness and ring IQ to work within the constraints Father Time had inflicted on his body and found a way to be effective (helps if you hit like a Mack truck).

    RIP big guy.

    George Foreman vs. Muhammad Ali
    WBC Heavyweight Title
    October 30, 1974

    Round 1 - 10-9 - Ali
    Round 2 - 10-9 - Ali Close
    Round 3 - 10-9 - Foreman
    Round 4 - 10-9 - Foreman Close
    Round 5 - 10-9 - Foreman
    Round 6 - 10-9 - Foreman
    Round 7 - 10-9 - Ali
Round 8 - Ali wins by knockout

It's been quite a while since I watched this fight but each time I really enjoy it. If you go by the fight's reputation, you would think that Ali just laid against the ropes taking punishment until the rope-a-dope spelled Big George's downfall. That was not the case at all. There was some rope-a-doping but Ali hit Foreman quite a bit.

    George Foreman, rest in peace.

    Jorge Arce v Jose Rojas

    Round 1: 10-9 Rojas
    Round 2: 10-9 Rojas
    Round 3: 10-9 Rojas
    Round 4: 10-9 Arce
    Round 5: 10-9 Rojas
Round 6: Arce drops and stops Rojas

Total through 5 completed rounds - 49-46 Rojas (scores not known)

Thanks to @Young Terror for putting me onto this. Really turned into a terrific fight with solid, speedy exchanges throughout. Would have loved to have seen more of this but Arce ended things quite selfishly with a left hook to the liver.

    Great fight!
I feel bad about Bobby Chacon , Muhammad Ali and Wilfred Benitez. Certainly among my favorite boxers along with El Coloradito Lopez!

Benitez is the boxer that I wanted for him to die the most, not because I hate him,but I felt bad for him,it must be hard for his sister to take care of him and not remember his past glory of being a great boxer with a great personality, now reduced to a mere vegetable.

Everyone knows about Arce being an action fighter, but Gusano Rojas had his share of wars also, particulary in the early days. Maldonado and Nieves fights were also very good. He even gave a good effort against Penalosa, but was outscored pretty clearly at the end.
Later on in his career He developed into more of a boxer and a genuine world class operator, what is quite remarkable considering that He was 25-11 following the Arce loss.

The list of names on Rojas's record is also very impressive:
    - Isaac Bustos
    - Rosendo Alvarez
    - Chemito Moreno
    - Cristian Mijares
    - Gerry Penalosa
    - Jorge Arce
    - Vic Darchinyan
    - Kohei Kono
    - Nobuo Nashiro
    - Suriyan Sor Rungvisai
    - Julio Zarate
    - Shinsuke Yamanaka
    - Jhonny Gonzalez

Who's who of his era in the Bantamweight and below.

More like mini Kinchen vs Barkley for me,one is a go-for-broke brawler and the other can box but has a punch fetish.
