Pat, I never knew their 3rd match was out there.

Pipino Cuevas v Angel Espada III (welterweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 2: 10-9 Cuevas
Round 3: 10-8 Cuevas (Espada docked a point for holding)
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 6: 10-9 Cuevas
    Round 7: 10-9 Espada
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Cuevas
Round 10: Cuevas drops and stops Espada

Total through 9 completed rounds: 89-83 Cuevas (actual scores: 88-83, 87-84 and 88-84 all for Cuevas

Pat, although I had it a bit wider than you I still felt Espada was in this fight from the beginning. He was an explosive counter-puncher and I don't agree with the Olympic commentator Jim Healy, that Espada didn't hit very hard. It's just that Cuevas had an anvil for a jaw. But some of those shots that Espada was detonating on his chin were beauties that could have taken out many a welterweight. A bit harsh that point on Espada in the 3rd round considering what Cuevas was allowed to do south of the border on Espada. I think the ref may have been a bit rattled by the partisan crowd. They absolutely adored Cuevas. When the ref actually did caution Cuevas for low blows - without even taking a point - debris started flying into the ring. They loved their Cuevas. I totally enjoyed the fight.

    Dubois vs Lerena

Had previously seen this, was looking more for the reference of Howard Foster who officiated this fight. Dramatic first round, a temple shot by Leeena offsets Dubois’s equilibrium who lands awkwardly on his knee/ankle. Top Rank commentary didn’t mention the visible issue, that led to him voluntarily going down 2 further times in this round. There was clearly an issue with the first knockdown, I haven’t seen a fighter as much as Dubois go down so much in the manner of falling forward, and basically jumping down to balance himself on his hands. In retrospect I am surprised he did not do the same in the Joshua and Hrgovic fights when hit big.

The finish, Lerena didn’t take advantage of the vulnerabilities and left himself square on for a textbook Dubois straight right. Then comparing to Wardley finish, there were a lot of unanswered shots, but more placed shots, Dubois’s punches tend to be more correct and basic, a lot more was significantly landing including an uppercut that took Lerena down to the bottom rope, he then stumbled into Foster who called it after the bell. I don’t see an issue with the stoppage as Lerena looked gone, lack of thinking of a better term.

Crazy to think off the back of this vulnerable performance he goes into the Usyk fight previously mentioned. Ultimately he put up more than a respectable effort in what looks a rushed opportunity.

Tyson with bronchitis dominates a courageous Jameson who came to fight but was overmatched. Imagine if Tyson was healthy!

Great fight, soured by Vazquez's poor attitude after the end. If this is how he treated boxing writers, no wonder he hasnt been voted to the IBHOF yet.

The judges' scorecards were too wide IMO. I had it at 113-113.
