Trying to catch up on recent Lubin fights ahead of his weekend challenge, to see if there’s any doubt he can give me on the fight outcome. Watched Lubin vs Arias, his comeback fight after the Fundora war which felt like the biggest factor in believing he will always fall short and just not have enough for the very top. Lubin looked pretty relaxed in this fight back, albeit against a limited opponent who just had a wild overhand right to contend with, a debatable stoppage on whether Arias got up before 10, which I believe he did, but there was a lot of levels in this.

Then, a fight I regrettably could not watch at the time in the UK, Jermall Charlo vs Julian Williams. I am sure there was no broadcaster for a fight I really anticipated, and had been surprised to not see an official upload of the full fight since then. Thankfully found a version tonight which just went straight through it, this was thoroughly entertaining and highly skilled throughout.
At the time I loved the match up, looking at it now it feels such a prime version of both, there was some real smart, technical work in there, some of it simple, but executed so well.
Charlo’s jab started off like lightning, which resulted in a neat 2nd round knockdown. Charlo looked so strong too.
I had watched a bit of Williams at the time, and gave him a good chance, he was basically competitive in this fight until the finish, smooth counter work and one, two’s. I was very pleased to see him go on and get a big title win after this, always felt he looked vulnerable in following fights but glad he did have overall success.

The uppercut finish here is added to the list of one of my favourites, I had to replay it several times over, it was a thing of beauty after Williams landed a one, two first, Charlo rode the second shot and such a great counter uppercut that sent Williams down face first, it was over from this point. I’d read about it after but this really was perfect execution.

I couldn’t warm to Charlo, both of them really but this was an impressive win, performance, highlight reel and a fight I will go back to.

Who among us doesn’t have a few minutes to appreciate the young Schoolboy, Bobby Chacon?

Here he is in June 1977 vs Miguel Estrada at the Olympic Auditorium.

Estrada is a very rangy 5-foot-10, giving him a five-inch reach advantage. A career journeyman out West, Estrada fought out of El Paso and would go on to become fight at the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas, in LA, Albuquerque, Stateline Nevada and even Honolulu.

Boxrec has him at 4-6-1 to Bobby’s 34-3, but Estrada was billed as much more experienced at the time and perhaps he has some results in Mexico before he shows up on Boxrec’s radar — we do know he fought Arturo Leon to a draw in his previous fight (and will lose to Leon in a rematch next time out). He fought a number of contenders and prospects.

Bobby is a former featherweight champ by this point. He lost it to Ruben Oliveras and will get his revenge over 10 rounds two fights after this.

Nothing much to say about this one. Chacon drops Miguel with a right in the first round and finds a home for it for the rest of the way, scoring three knockdowns in the second round to win by TKO.

Pat, a lot of take-aways for me in this fight. Basically because I remember seeing this fight back in the day on tape-delay. At the time I recall saying to myself, "What's wrong with Bobby?" And that was because I saw a lot of Bobby prior to this and felt his defense was gone. Looking through more mature eyes, Estrada did have a substantial height and reach on Bobby, like you said, and Bobby probably felt it was the only way of getting at him, which was to take a few to take this stringbean out of there. However, subsequent fights from Bobby did show that he was now getting hit a lot more and the head movement from his featherweight days was indeed gone. Moreover, I heard Jim Healy, the ring commentator say that his previous fight against Ramon Contreras saw Bobby get hit a lot. So we were moving into the second stage of Bobby's career at this time where most fights became a Donnybrook.

You are quite right this is Miguel Estrada he was fighting and not Jesus Estrada, which is how the video is marked. Jesus 'Papalero' Estrada was the fighter he made his first defense of the featherweight title against. Man, I'd love to see that one again. I recall Jesus having Bobby against the ropes attempting to belabor him there until Bobby let a counter rip that effectively ended the fight.

Lastly, awesome seeing Eddie Futch in Bobby's corner. With his affiliation with fighters such as Joe Frazier and Riddick Bowe over the years, it gets lost that he was actually a West Coaster.

Here's a fight recommended by @Flo_Raiden on the 'Greatest unknown classics' thread.

Jorge Elicier Julio v Julio Gamboa (bantamweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Gamboa
    Round 2: 10-9 Gamboa
    Round 3: 10-9 Gamboa
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Julio
    Round 6: 10-9 Gamboa
    Round 7: 10-9 Julio
Round 8: 10-10 Even (Best round)
    Round 9: 10-9 Gamboa
    Round 10: 10-9 Julio
    Round 11: 10-9 Julio
    Round 12: 10-9 Gamboa

Total: 116-114 Gamboa (actual scores: 115-113 Gamboa, 115-114 and 115-113 both for Julio on a split win)

Won't dispute the scores as they were all close and a draw would have probably been about the best decision. The first 3 rounds were about the easiest to score, but after that they were all close. Flo, you were on the money as far as including it in that thread. Such a beautiful blend of boxing, sharp-hitting and a lot of blood-letting if that's your thing. Really enjoyed this fight. I marked the 8th as the best round as they both were hurt this round and let it fly.

Yeah, I quickly realized this was Miguel and not Jose (double-checked Bobby’s record to make sure it wasn’t one guy named Jose Miguel Estrada, haha) and went on a probably over-long explanation of the Schoolboy’s opponent to make it clear since the bout is mislabeled on YouTube.

Nice catch there with Eddie Futch in Bobby’s corner … didn’t realize that.

I always thought Chacon had a right hand that basically threw itself … like there’s no split-second recognizing the opening or thinking through the combo, it was pure instinct more often than not. And he had laser-guided precision/accuracy with it. This fight to me kind of underscored that.

    Condensed version of the bout.

A few observations: unlike in the Tyson fight, this time Reggie Gross showed a good chin, taking all of Bruno's punches for 8 rounds without falling.

Gross could fight, no question about it, and he came to fight for the most part, but towards the end , started just laying around with his arms down, almost like Oliver McCall in the Lennox Lewis rematch but without crying.

Also note, one of the rare moments in which my two favorite past times, boxing and commercial airlines, mix. Air Europe was advertising on the ring's corners. That airline is now defunct, but its offspring, Air Europa of Spain, keeps alive and well after almost 40 years in the market.

I now want to watch Khaosai Galaxy lol...

Another example of my two favorite hobbies mixing: Japan Airlines is advertising here on the corners.

    And a great knockout.....but...

This boxer here fighting Khaosai Galaxy definitely does not look like Jose Luis Soto.

This is the actual Jose Luis Soto in a fight which was my first in person boxing fight:
