The 'what fights did you watch today?' thread

Take the best of Tito at 147 and the best at Hearns at 147...is it even a contest with that stupid reach and leverage or can Tito get inside and do some work? My guess is yall will say Tommy and that's my vote as well in this fantasy matchup. But the more I think about it the more I would like to see a classic hook off the pocket work vs. a freak of nature that doesn't need the pocket to make it do what it do...damn interesting little match.

 

Just watched a few clips of Wilfred Benitez and to think besides the late 1979 loss to Ray Leonard he fought an entire decade being undefeated. Benitez has to be regarded as at least #2 if not #1 of all time PR fighters. I swear this dude was/is the definition of the Noble Art way before Sweet Pea arrived on the scene. What a great fighter...hit and don't get hit. Will we ever see this type of art work again? My belief is no because trainers are not woven from that cloth anymore sadly but truly.

The walking Bible of Boxing! to beat Roberto Duran in the absolute peak of the "hands of stone" era where others were scared sh*tless to go toe to toe with Duran and Benitez set the blueprint on how to deal with a bully like that?!?! Kid 17 year old phenom Benitez is #1 all time PR ever for me (you can stick your Ortiz GP lol) and Sorry to all the W. Gomez followers that like the power and 80% ko's but Wilfred Benitez ,in my book, was #1 Puerto Rican. What a great fighter and style we'll never see again. Pea was his only contemporary a decade removed.

wow, Ortiz or Gomez would be number 1 at PR for me with benitez 3rd but im a huge fan of Wilfred.

btw GPater, you ever have Cocoa Kid in there? I've seen all these Puerto Rican lists and every single "expert" leaves out the dude that laid the blue print on how to beat Mexican heart and determination, come forward styles. Cocoa fought twice a month and had to throw bouts as well for the money but back in that era he was the predecessor of new age welters like Paul Williams getting that elevation on the mound. He was tall and stayed tall throughout a fight boxing at a distance.

 

ive heard of Cocoa Kid but never realy studied him in great detail so i can really rank him as i dont know enough

Ortiz is the Number 1 Puerto Rican fighter for me.

 

Gomez was a great fighter! amazing at 122. Probably best 122lb fighter ever but as he moved up it was very hard for him and he fell short. dissapointing he was 2lbs overweight in the biggest fight of his career.

 

He lost to some good guys at 126 though but it just goes to show what a difference 4lbs can make at the lower weights.

 

I like this project of rating the Best Puerto Rican's of all time. Do I put Tito at 5 or starting the second tier at 6? You know it's a good field when the son of Felix Sr. is there at 5 or 6 and his old man fought Salvador S in the late 70's! History here....

We need guys to learn more about Cocoa Kid though and just how revolutionary he was back in those days. Dude was a beast and reports from my old man said that he threw more than an occasional fight because he was that goddamn good at 47/54! But in the top 3 I have W. Gomez as 3 with of course Ortiz at #2. W. Benitez is #1 for me the guy was a phenom especially on Defence like a Sweet Pea like i said.

Would anyone have Escalara in the top 10? Yeah he did loose to Arguello but no shame in that and both times the fights were great especially the first.

 

After seeing the Tuaman pancake that bloke, i got little knockout craving and who do you turn to in this situation? the Ironman himself of couse, so what fight do i decide to watch? Buster and Mike's little dance in Tokyo.

I will say this, Buster hit Mike with power shots through the whole fight. Mike was so convinced that he could not lose, I think he didn't realize he was hurt. Same with the Razor fights, the second one being one of the most violent bruising fights I ever saw. His will came into question after he was incarcerated. Started with Evander and the story ends from there. He knew he wasn't prepared on that run.

Oh and btw damn you Robin Givens, to make a grown man drive an $80k BMW into a tree and bang Japanese ho's up until 2 hours before the Buster fight -I would say that Robin Boomerang must have had that P where you toss it up in the air and it comes back down as sunshine (Harlem Knights) lol.

 

Escalara is a good fighter could be top 10 definitly

Was sad to see Danny Williams get beat up and almost stopped by the Human Tone.

Audley looked like Lennox Lewis but offcourse the opposition was crap.

Coleman Barrett left a good impression.
