Bones Adams vs. Orlando Canizales.

This was too soon for a very young Adams really. He put up a good effort though, He just couldn't keep Canizales of, who proved to be too strong for a Bones Adams who was still developing and stopped him in the 11th.

I really believe this fight was the making of Adams though, he went from employing a awkward style with a lot of foot movement and low hands to becoming more polished and slick. Injuries also played a part in him having to work on his technique, but he was better for changing and becoming more technical, as he didn't have the reflexes to fight with that hands down style.

 

That's hard to watch. If Hearns just stayed with that brillient jab and fought more cautious and tried to outbox guys at long range, he wouldn't have lost some fights. He just had so much 'heart'.

It's a shame really, James Toney should've been greater, but he couldn't shake the life outside of boxing. Its no secret he liked to "party" lol that's ok if you can turn it on and off. Toney would come into camps with beer bellies amongst other things as well. I think if he had Floyd's or Hopkins regiment/dedication we would be sitting here right now arguing if he was the GOAT or not.

 

Toney the GOAT? Never in my book mate, not with all the dedication in the world.

Have you seen much of Bones? What a strange career that guy had eh?

 

How many guys do you know who've done as much as JT has, but still considered to have underachieved? Add focus to what he had and he's not close to being the GOAT, but Toney raises his status immeasurably. I was just a big fan of his skillset tbh and frustrated he didn't live the life, by saying GOAT i was trying to give an impression of how he didn't make the most of his assets.

Yep, i've seen a lot of Bones Adams, one of my favourite fighters. He was underrated imo, I don't know why people didn't take to him. Could've been because he was a little guy around at a time when there was a lot of little brawlers and KO artists and people didn't like this little white guy, who was slick and could box your head off. Probabily why Ayala got the decision over him and he lost interest after that fight and kind of forced out, which was sad really.

 

I just watched jackson v graham, u have to feel sorry for graham there, so many boxers have won fake titles and it seems like he was a good guy who had bad luck.

 

Watched Eubank-Thompson I. Amazing effort from both, but especially Eubank. He had Thompson reeling so many times yet just wouldn't/couldn't take advantage. Took some monster shots from Thompson well past his best but it hardly made him flinch, one of the ATG Brit chins for sure.

Remember watching one of Hameds fights on a HBO broadcast and Larry Merchant mentions this fight as it was on the undercard (but not showing on HBO)...and he says something to the effect about him not really respecting Eubank before, and being proved wrong by this fight. Thought it was a nice touch from him.

 

Come on S&C you may be hyping James Toney up a little too much.

My thoughts on Toney is he is a very talented B fighter, in the fact that he is better than 2nd class opposition and can become dominant and turn in amazing performances, but he has flaws that are very outstanding and can and will be exposed when he moves into that A class or even by a determined, and prepared, B level fighter.

Toney just had a weakness to mobility IMO.

 

Toney's skillset is A class my friend, his attitude and application was not unfortunately, but his skills match up to anything in his era.

The only thing you can criticise is his poor-ish footwork, but then he could cut the ring off pretty well (check out Toney vs. Littles) he was just lazy with his feet, a big part of that was his mid/short range countering strengths and the fact that he was brillient on the inside.

The GOAT comment was a tongue in cheek statement, but we underplay him if we call him a B level fighter. He did some inexplicable things in his career, like going MIA after the Jones jnr. fight, but at his best he was a great fighter who could've been greater.

You can be sure if i'm showing a kid a fighter to study for certain things, Toney would be in that mix. Speak to some of the insiders who have more boxing in their little finger then me and they'll tell you, James Toney was one of the sweetest practitioners who just took a lot of things for granted.

Toney does have an amazing skill set but he was not in the quality of the real 'elite' fighters, Jones proved this. And I have a feeling Hopkins would also beat Toney but this is unfounded and mainly speculation.

The thing with Toney is, he can be completely overrated on some facets of his game, as certain fights show him to be superb and others do not. Toney had vulnerabilities that show him up against the very best, but against the rest he is 'great'.
