    Frankie Gavin vs Michael Lomax

Gavin is special!!! Pretty unique style for a British fighter, he has a 'radar' type defence - spots everything coming his way. Such a natural in the ring, the punches flow so easily.

Cristian Mijares vs Juan Alberto Rosas

You know, after the three losses he suffered people wrote Mijares off as shot, from watching this, I still think he ain't too far off his best. He's slowed a bit in terms of speed and reflexes, but other than that, he's still got a lot of what made him successful in the first place. He is still very clever(one of the best ring IQ's in the sport without doubt) and has good ring generalship. And he still sets traps and employs a lot of subtle little movements to avoid oncoming punches. Rosas was a perfect opponent for him, just the kind Mijares likes to fight. It was not only a world title fight but also a confidence builder, his handlers did very well in that respect.

I think Mijares may very well be the best at 115 right now. He's a class above Cazares IMO, and the fighter that I think could conceivably beat him right now, Omar Narvaez, is essentially a fighter that is content to sit on his title and face a steady diet of no-hopers. Which is a shame, for those of you who like the sweet science side of the sport, that's the fight for you.

I urge, no, I plead all of you who read this post to watch the third round of this fight. Look at the sheer number of shots he slips at such close range, often backed against the ropes. James Toney himself would be proud watching this, it's absolutely immense. You can count on one hand how many punches Rojas lands, if Cristian doesn't slip them, he's blocking them. I'm so glad that this guy didn't retire, he epitimises just what a pure, intelligent boxer is.

Here's the third. Please watch, and let me know what you think:

I recently watched number 1 and if Duran would have fought Ray with the same vigor he fought him with in the first fight then that fight would have been very difficult for Ray IMO. Even though Ray Leonard was a boxing genius.

That first fight is slightly misunderstood because of what happened in the rematch. It wasn't really a case of Leonard fighting with the wrong gameplan, although it played a part, but the truth is Roberto Duran around the time of the Bizzaro to the last De Jesus fight and even to the fight with Ray, would've given anyone in history hell from lightweight to welterweight. He actually matched Leonard for handspeed in that first fight and even beat him in spots. Plus his defense in that fight was brillient. People say Ray just fought dumb and was outbrawled but we tend to miss the subtle skill Duran displayed, which was by far and away a bigger factor. The second fight means less IMHO. As i said even though Leonard was a genius and was bound to make adjustments, we all know the story of the circumstances leading up to it...taking nothing away from SRR.

Something else that's missed in the Leonard vs. Duran fights is the impact that Leonards power had on Duran. Leonard's power was underrated IMO. He actually won the last 3 rounds of the first fight because of it, Roberto had to employ a tactic that Hopkins and Ward use today to smother his power and speed. Anyway, i digress.

Yep, he's not your quintessential Mexican, he's no blood and guts warrior. But watching a prime Mijares is watching a thing of beauty, it's like violent ballet. His intelligence is unrivalled except for a select few fighters. I might seem like a boring ****er but give me a prime Mijares or Calderon to watch and I'd take that over a Tyson or Vazquez-Marquez. Dont get me wrong, I love Vazquez-Marquez(except the 4th) and watching Tyson brutalise people is always great, but I love the poetry in motion types like those guys, that a KO isnt coming makes no difference to me.
