Ezzard Charles vs Pat Valentino


Round 1: Lots of holding.
Charles on back foot looking to pop left jab, blocks left hook well with right arm/elbow.
Valentino looking for big hooks, wild clumsy fighter
Some nice pivots at mid-range by Charles
Lands some superb right crosses, and left hooks, and hurts Valentino
Walks Valentino onto a great right uppercut with a lazy/pawing jab
Took a minute to figure out Valentino’s rushing style

Round 2: Valentino boring in. Charles going back looking for big counter-shots
Charles lovely right uppercuts and short left hooks as Valentino come inside
Valentino getting through with right hook to body
Charles turns Valentino on the ropes, deft move
Valentino much stronger inside
Charles struggled when Valentino sustained rushes

Round 3: Valentino working body inside, Charles looking ragged
Charles’ footwork poor, squaring up as he steps back.

Round 4: Charles on back foot looking for counter – good work with left hooks (short and long ones)
Holding inside and effectively tying up Valentino inside *
Lands good right
Lots of holding
Some nice shoulder roll defence, has sound grasp of hand positioning and moves head and upper body well whilst ad******g hand position as necessary

Round 5: Lovely 1-2-left hook to start round by Charles
Waiting for Valentino to come forward then countering
Some nice straight rights and short right uppercuts
Lots of holding
Pins Valentino to ropes using his body (perhaps showing improved strength)

Round 6: Nice shoulder roll and leans back from hooks – nice upper body movement
Tying up Valentino inside – Valentino now ineffective inside
Valentino has good 4-5 hook flurry but is tied up.
Valentino some nice hooks – Charles back pedalling – letting Valentino work

Round 7: Valentino looks up for it.
Lovely long right by Charles as Valentino falls in Charles feints right and then ties up Valentino with his right arm, before transferring weight to left side and fires a double left uppercut
Valentino ragged with aggression
Charles lands some lovely rights over the top of Valentino’s low held left, as he bores in
4-5 long rights off lazy jabs stun Valentino

Round 8 – Charles comes out and lands long left hook followed up by a shorter right hand and KO’s Valentino. (35 seconds into the round)

Charles: 1,2,4,5,7
Valentino:3,6

Overall impressions: Charles looks fairly ragged in this one, especially his normally cat-like footwork. Steady gameplan of wearing down Valentino with big counters as he comes in, pays off in the 8th. Good display of punching but lacks his usual finesse. Good back and forth action though, marred by a good bit of holding

 

Such a shame about his untimely death, I watched his fight against Wilfred Gomez a couple of weeks ago - what a great fighter - all round boxing ability, particularly his defence was class. The guy started the pro game so early and look what he achieved in his short career, and such a great technical boxer. I wonder how many amateur fights he had?

 

Only about 8 or 9. Winning them all. As is the case with almost all the great Mexicans, he turned over very early.

 

before i watched the fight i was expecting a real WAR. not a 1 sided beat down. the better the fighter the better he performed imo.

wish heavyweight boxing was always that good!.they just had more toughness,heart and more balls back then!.

bit of a bargain tbh!.

 

It is fascinating to watch his skill level and know that he barely had an amateur career. Brilliant fighter.

Johnny Nelson needs to come out of retirement..!!

 

Just seen highlights on Premier League years 99 on Sky Sports funnily enough. The way he bashed him up with contempt took the ****. When Thompson did land he shook head like ''nah...not good enough take this you ****! and that!''.

Proper dislike in them punches. He's still beat up guys like Huck.

Been rewatching all the Fab4 fights this week. I still think the stoppage was a bit premature in Leonard-Hearns I. Although I do love the way Ray sticks his hands up after landing the shot that hurt Tommy.

 

Great viewing, LP. Zarate was something kinda different. That Rodolfo Martinez fight is a brillient chess-match.

You sadist...Tommy was done.

I think it was just at the right time.

Hearns and Leonard are very even, but Ray just had more lung capacity and that's why after Leonard figured out that Tommy wasn't the same puncher in close as he was from a distance and started going to the body, it was over. Hearns had nothing left.

He probably was done, it's just the timing of the stoppage was wrong.

I don't think standing at range with Tommy was ever going to work.
