You can get a fuller copy of the Basilio fight, which i thought he edged. There's also the Johnny saxton fight, which isn't great but at least you get a fuller look. He was jobbed so many times so his record is misleading. Probabily only behind Robinson as the best welter ever and on par with Leonard and Hearns. He was similar to Ray Leonard actually and is among very few i'd pick to beat a peak Leonard at welterweight. Gavilan was super skilled and had a vicious hydrid left hook. Kind of like the hook/uppercut Nonito Donaire shoots today.
Ive heard he was very good, not a fighter you get mentioned much these days though, maybe the lack of footage of him in his prime does his talent a disservice and makes it hard to judge how good eh really was.
Judah V Matthyee. Scored it Zab by two. Lot clearer decision than Alexander bout. Its a victory that can look very good in a few years. Zab won a lot of the rounds up until round 10 (the kd)
Mayweather vs. Castillo 1. What's so amazing about watching this fight is seeing how Floyd has got physically stronger over the years. He gave up so much ground in this fight. Castillo set a fast tempo without burning himself out, he actually pressured Mayweather more with his presence and positioning then he did with his punches. He didn't load up or over commit and leave himself open for counters. Castillo swept the board after the first 4/5 rounds and i had him winning this fight clean and clear. I had Matthysse winning that fight pretty clearly. Can't remember my scores, but i had Lucas taking it by about 3 or 4 rounds. I don't think Zab banked enough of the early rounds when Lucas was at his most hesitant. Matthysse came on and took it going away imo. Matthsse after round 7 and 8 was really dominant and won his rounds so much more cleanly.
Yeah, I had Castillo winning 114-112 vs Mayweather. Last night I watched De La Hoya vs Mayweather (not because it was a great fight, but it was a great event). De La Hoya did quite well but he wasn't very accurate with his body shots and didn't throw the jab enough. 116-112 Mayweather.
I disagree. I think Matthysee took maybe 2 of the first 8. Most of his shots landed were in clinches on the body. Zabs jab was solid from the start. He took round 10 and 11 clearly. A lot depends on how you score the 12th in that fight. I was impressed with how Zab took it to the body seeing how 70% of shots landed by Matthysee were on Zabs body shows he can take it pretty well to the body and was still there in the 12th.
You're clearly giving all the nip and tuck rounds to Zab. I'll have to give this another watch as i haven't seen it since the night and the next day, but only 2 of the first 8 to Lucas and Zab in your words 'clearly' taking round 10 and 11? leave off, mate. That's so off base and it's where you're going wrong. They were perhaps Matthysse's best rounds of the fight. Matthysse won that fight on clean effective punching and he out hussled Judah late. He should've been a bit more urgent in the early rounds and they were close, but he pulled away after the 7th or 8th (can't remember which one) and he CLEARLY took the final 4 rounds including the last, no debate about it. Sometimes you only see what you want to see.
Steve Collins-Chris Eubank 2. How this could be called a split decision is beyond me. I scored it 116-112 for Collins. Decent fight but Eubank just didnt work hard enough as is so often the case with him
Yep, it was closer to a shutout then a SD. Saying that Eubank won the first and didn't get it so perhaps that had an influence.
Roberto Duran-Davey Moore. Duran was simply too goo and too ****in powerful for Moore. Some of those bodyshots would have broke a lesser man in half though what the **** was the ref doing in the 8th. Moore could hardly stand at one point while Duran was unloading on him. Shocking refereeing. Will watch the other reccomendations later.
