Funnily enough, I'm kinda' watching Canto now (scanning through his fight with Vibonchai to see if I can find out more on the Thai) and I'm about to start a thread on it in the Classic funnily enough, so maybe you boys can take a look at that :good

Kuniaki Shibata Vs Ernesto Marcel (WBC Featherweight Championship)

The 11th of the 11th, 1972. Marcel, the stylish Panamanian boxer, takes on brave and technically proficient Japanese champion Shibata, in a fight ruled a draw on the night.

Jap' ref' appears to take 2 points off Marcel in round 6 for use of the head (or rather Shibata being cut from it) which is insane! Marcel won the round, but 10-8 Shibata overall. That is the case I'm sure as Marcel ups his game in the 7th, with Shibata managing to stay in it with his precise counters, but with Marcel doing a better Shibata thn Kuniaki himself, springing in and out of range with punches wrapped inside. When Marcel is in a rhythm, his long arms, mixture of shots and two-punch combinations are full of variety and a joy to watch. Shibata himself is a fantastic fighter in full flow and popping off combinations, especially with his left hook body-head combo, his best technique IMO.

9th round is an incredible display of technical trading. They trade sharp counters throughout, but Shibata just edged it for me by landing more. 12th round: AMAZING! Marcel all over Shibata for the first 2 1/2 minutes, as the brave Jap tries to land his left hook, he's all out of place. Late on however, he finds a home for it and fires back with both hands at a tiring Marcel, who somehow finds it within himself to beat Shibata around again as the bell goes to end the round.

The rest of the fight is bossed by Marcel, with Shibatas bursts of punches crawling to a halt for the most part of the championship rounds. He briefly comes alive again in the final round, but Marcel again pushes the fight, displays great ring generalship and piles on the offence.

    MARCEL: 3; 7; 8; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14; 15

    SHIBATA: 1; 2; 4; 5; 6 (+1); 9

    MARCEL 143-141 SHIBATA

Without the bull**** ruling, 145-140 to Marcel. A competitive fight with some close rounds? Until the 10th, yes. Can I see a draw by the flow of action? No. But a brave, popular and exciting Champion in his home town? I've seen worse.

    Marcel clear decision win though.

Ben Villaflor Vs Kuniaki Shibata 1

    VILLAFLOR: 5; 7; 10; 11; 12; 14;
    SHIBATA: 1; 2; 3; 4; 6; 8; 9; 13; 15

    Villaflor 141-144 Shibata

Villaflor gets off to a slow start, and for me for most of the fight Villaflors and though his jab is prodded or flicked out a lot it's Shibatas head movement that wins that battle for me. Shibata lands with the crisper shots throughout, Villaflor has his best successes when he gets in the Japs grill and puts shots together and tries to back Shibata up. Both men were content to be cagey from centre ring, an interesting enough clash to watch but nothing Earth-shattering.

A close fight, and difficult to score.

Villaflor obviously learned from this in time for their second outing, imposing his size and strength on Shibata from the get-go, roughing him and brutally sparking him.

I always score the 10th a 10-8. You score a 10-9 round when a fighter just nicks a round off another. Maidana dominated him, badly hurt him, and almost stopped him. 10-8 round no doubt for me

    What did you score Oscar-Whitaker?

The commentary was a bit annoying at times with Merchant and co complaining about the technical and tactical aspect of the fight. As if every fight has to be slug fest to be fun? I quite enjoyed the boxing. I scored it to Sweet Pea by a couple. I think his jab controlled the fight. The crowd would go nuts even when Oscar would miss horribly, which probably did influence the judges and casual fans view of the fight. Nevertheless, 116-110 is way too wide.

Haven't got a round by round at hand :-( In rounds, 7-5 Oscar IIRC, 114-112). Very good fight.

LP, never seen the beginning of the fight before WTF like you say how did he get in the ring!!

Thought Zarate soaked up Zamoras wild swings well before he began to walk him down and put it on Alfonso. Zamora didnt know anything else but to fire back and got took out. Good fight while it lasted.

Didnt Zamora go off the rails a little after his first loss? Think he ended up getting knocked out by a journeyman shortly after and was never the same. What a puncher though:bbb
