    Yep, he took a couple of wins from Penalosa. I like him as a fighter, even though as a stylist he could be rather dis-jointed and erratic. When on point he boxed very sharply, with a kind of relaxed explosiveness that brings to mind Hasegawa among modern fighters. That same smooth movement. Better puncher than Hasegawa, though (in a technical sense, not in terms of power). Then again at other times it seems like he let his emotions get the better of him, had an air of smugness about him even, which caused him to allow the fight to get ugly/sloppy when he didn't need it to be. Good fighter, though, some nice tools.

    Kim had a very short run, but he really looked the goods for that period, taking the 0's from the likes of Rafael Orono and even Jiro Watanabe. The guy was a little buzz-saw, again not too dissimilar from someone like Chang with his ability to press the fight while retaining his senses and awareness, constantly on the offensive, but always finding the best way in, through bobbing and weaving, slipping and countering to the body, etc. Very fun fighter to watch. That energy-consuming style is more than likely what lead to his early exit, though, as the rematch with Orono would attest to. Definitely a very talented guy for that small period.

    Oh, I probably have his fight with Watanabe, I'll take a look tonight (Have probably seen it but forgotten it in a haze)

  3. Michael Nunn vs James Toney: Toney KO 11 Nunn.

    What an excellent and very watchable fight.

    Nunn, in the first half, dominated with his excellent use of his jab and ring but Toney stormed back and was, on my card at least, on his way back to a close but very deserved points victory.

    Fantastic punch to end it all though.

    You can't, however, help but think how Eubank or Benn would have done against the two of them and I think Benn would have given Toney hell and likewise Eubank with Nunn. I'm not sure if either British guy would have won but feel that Eubank against Nunn was definitly within his, Eubank, grasp.

  4. Just checked on Boxrec for the official scoring for the Nunn vs Toney fight.

    What fight were the judges watching? It's lucky for Toney that he scored the KO as he was about to get robbed. Shocking scoring for such a close fight.

    Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Vs Edar Sosa

    WONJONGKAM: 2; 3; 5; 6; 7; 8; 10; 11;
    SOSA: 1; 4; 9;

    For The Lineal Flyweight Championship & WBC Title: After struggling to find his timing and having to turn aggressor against slick pot shotter Suriyan Ror Rungvisai and turning in a routine performance against awkward Jap' (very) fringe contender Kogawa, it was felt the veteran lineal Flyweight Champion Wonjongkam would have his hands full with experienced Mexican Edgar Sosa.

    Here, with the Mexican happy to throw straight punches from mid-range, Wonjongkams countering and defensive reflexes appear up to scratch, as he lands the cleaner, more effective shots throughout to win a clear and dominant decision. Pong' deducted a point in in the 9th after a clash of heads. Couldn't see a cut on Sosa, but Wonjongkam had badly marked him up around the eyes anyway, and with the Thai clearly winning the round I could only give it to Sosa 10-9.

    From the reports I'd read I expected a late round resurgance from Sosa, but he did little effective work, although the 11th was very close as the Mexican tried to get in and fire off shots to the body, but Wonjongkam landed some nice clean counter punches and still wasn't easy to hit clean.

    Wonjongkam 117-111 Sosa

    Hopefully Segura, Marquez or Concepcion next :yep

    Trinidad vs Vargas (104-99)

    This fight had three phases - the first two or three rounds, with Trinidad's KDs and he dominated, then Vargas got his KD, the point deductions and he eked out some rounds, then the final phase, where Trinidad came back, Vargas got a point deducted and then he finally finished him off in Round 12. Vargas showed guts. Might even have been a different fight if it hadn't been for the low blows.

    Joppy vs Trinidad (35-39) - even though Trinidad won 3 of the 4 rounds and got two KDs in the scored rounds, I don't think that it was a very one-sided fight. Joppy made it sort of competitive.

    Donaire vs Narváez (119-109).

    A bit boring, good defence from the Argentine but wasn't active enough.

    Marlon Starling vs Donald Curry II

    Good fight. A much better encounter than their first bout, which was stale in comparison to this fierce fight between 2 of the top 3 fighters in the Welterweight division at the time. A hotly contested and competitive battle between Starling and Curry, mostly fought on the inside, where despite being at a disadvantage stylistically and physically (Curry was the rangier man, compared to the more compact Starling) Curry flourished, particularly in the mid rounds to snatch the fight in most viewers opinions.

    The broadcast missed out rounds 7-9. However, Al Bernstein states that Curry clearly won all of these rounds. Although that might not be the most accurate or reliable testimony, I trust Bernstein's word, so I will consider that Curry did in fact win those rounds, and subsequently factored it into my scoring. Assuming that Donald Curry did win those rounds, I scored the fight 143-142 (8 rounds to 7) in the champions favour. I understand that is a very close, and maybe even controversial score (most had it much wider) but that is what I ended up with. I thought Starling dominated the first 6 rounds, dropping maybe only a single round in that bracket, and then won rounds 11 & 12 to take 7 rounds on my card. I thought a lot of the time, he was landing a lot more clean work on the inside, particularly with the uppercuts, whereas for portions of the fight Curry's 1-2 was just pasting Marlon's gloves. It wasn't until Starling's workrate slowed, and his defense became less tight, that Curry really started to have success.

    Sweet_Scientist, one of the best, had the exact same score :good

    IIRC Curry did won those rounds well. I had it 9-6 IIRC.

    11th round: beautiful counter punching from Moochy.

    Curry was really hammering Starling in that last round. Marlon looked quite shaken for most of the 3 minutes, and whilst he never looked in danger of being stopped, it's still surprising to see that Magic Man hurt, even if only slightly.

    I watched Joe vs Lacy for about the 1000th time lol.

    Actually found the post fight interview with Lacy on youtube that I can't remember seeing before. He was very gracious. On a better note Gary Shaw had a face like a slapped arse!!!

    Curry/Starling II is one of the best technical in-fighting chess-matches ever. I'm pretty sure I had the same score as Flea, although it's been a couple of years since I've scored it. Might have to re-watch it again and do so.
