George Benton vs Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter (95-95 Draw)

****, I had a feeling this one would end up a draw :yep

Lovely clash of styles in this fight. Benton, the technically proficient stylist with his slick defence and quick counters, vs the tough, aggressive dynamite-wielding fists of Carter. Very back and forth fight for me, Benton started the better, losing the first on my card - courtesy of Carter's step-forward ramrod jab and sharp left hooks - but won the next two, slipping Carter's punches and negating his work on the inside when they came together. Then Carter had a great spell in the mid rounds (which probably won him the fight on the judges cards) where he pressed Benton and landed hard fast punches. You can really see the mean intentions on Carter's punches, I would not like to get hit by one of those :yep. Benton wasn't as effective, not throwing as much and allowing himself to be crowded on the inside by Carter, who stepped back and whacked hooks in, some of which Benton was able to slip but not enough to negate the better work from Carter. The last 4 were close. Benton put some great work together in rounds 7, 8 and 10, particularly in the first minute of the last round as he bombarded Carter's tight guard with short hooks, many of which penetrated. It was a good finish to the fight.

I can't contest the decision. It was a close fight which could have gone either way depending on whether you appreciated Benton's counterpunching, or Carter's aggression more. A draw would have been the fairest result for me. A top notch fight between 2 very skilled fighters who I have to say would excell if they were fighting in todays middleweight division. Carter would crush the likes of Golovkin with ease IMO.

  2. I think that was a really good fight.

Casamayor turned back the clock for a couple of rounds before Marquez made his patented adjustments.

From about round 7 it was one-way traffic, but Casa gave it a real go.

In their primes it would have been a real 50-50 affair, with Casamayor perhaps having the edge stylistically, but Marquez probably winning a close decision.

Sports; pretty much how I saw it mate. I had it a draw as well and it was a good clash if styles.

As for Carter, whilst I don't doubt he could smash Golovkin, he was not massive and would no doubt do as everyone else does today....I fancy seeing him and Khan @ 147 :rofl

As for Benton I would say with his style he would most probably be a lauded technical genius and 'P4P' :hey

I'm sure I'll be accused of the usual 'bias' for the old timers but I honestly couldn't see any of the current crop from 154 to 160 beating him.

Benton and Carter both had very effective styles, which would give a lot of fighters hell today. Like you mentioned, Carter wasn't that big, so would probably be a welter or JMW today. Imagine Carter against the likes of Berto and Ortiz? If would be slaughter.

Khan :-(. It would be murder.

How the hell did Carter manage to spark Emile giffith?:huh:D

It seems to me he had no business beating a boxer of Giffith's caliber. A once in a lifetime win if ever there was one.

Half and half. Carter was an absolute crusher. Griffith was in the mix of middleweight contenders in one of the most competitive era's of all time for the weight.

You certainly wouldn't expect Emile to get smashed up like that, but that was the division: and Carter was a monster.

He gets unfairly criticised IMO. The Hurricane (film) is so misleading most go completely the other way, but he was as dangerous a middleweight contender I can think of. Smashed fellow devastator Fernandez inside a round. He was a beast, not great or anything, but not a caveman either, as is evident in the Benton fight.

Obviously Dick Tiger was the best :hey
